Clarification offered on explosive Ratcliffe statement on United’s academy that left staff and parents bemused – report

A clarification has been provided on a recent remark made by Manchester United co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe about the club’s famous academy. Ratcliffe’s comment Ratcliffe and INEOS assumed operational control of United in February last year after completing a partial investment in the club. Their efforts to restore United to past glories have also extended to revamping the academy, which is in a much better state than it was a few years ago. The academy has been a cornerstone of United’s heritage but it was slightly neglected after Sir Alex Ferguson’s departure. Last month, Ratcliffe made an appearance on The Times’ The Business podcast and appeared to aim a dig at Carrington. Ratcliffe insisted the standards had slipped before claiming that the academy’s primary use is to nurture players that can be sold to generate profit. The British businessman remarked, “The academy has really slipped at Manchester United.” “You need the academy to be producing talent all the time.” “It helps you financially. That’s not a light switch. You don’t solve the academy problem overnight. It takes time. We just recruited a new academy director.” The Sun reported that these remarks left staff and parents of United’s youngsters bemused. Now, the newspaper have given an update, insisting that Ratcliffe’s statement may have been misinterpreted. Clarification offered Samuel Luckhurst of The Sun reveals, “Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s remark that the Manchester United academy had “really slipped” was NOT a reference to its playing talent.” “United insiders claim that Ratcliffe was specifically referring to the academy facilities, rather than the standards of its playing squad.” “The club plan to redevelop the academy facilities to bring them in line with the men’s and women’s first team buildings that opened within the last two years.” United’s new head of academy, Stephen Torpey, outlined his vision for the club’s youth ranks and what the future holds under his leadership.
