Chelsea held conversations with Erling Haaland’s camp but never made an official bid for the Borussia Dortmund star, it has been claimed. The Norway international has been the source of much speculation this summer. And Manchester United are likely to pursue the 21-year-old in next summer’s transfer window instead.
Chelsea are now poised to turn away from Haaland.
They had been hoping to sign the Norway international this summer, with Thomas Tuchel and Roman Abramovich both in agreement over a potential deal.
Now, however, they’re poised to go after Romelu Lukaku instead.
Chelsea have already seen one bid for the Belgium international rejected by Inter Milan – but are poised to return with another offer imminently.
That means any pursuit of Haaland is set to be paused for another year.
And Fabrizio Romano, speaking on his YouTube channel, has claimed Chelsea had discussions with the player’s camp – but never made a proper bid.

“From what I’ve told, no official bid yet,” he said.
“They never made a bid this summer. They had many conversations with Haaland’s camp, with Borussia Dortmund too to understand about the situation.
“But they never made an official bid, never with players also. So from Borussia Dortmund they’ve said they’ve received no formal bid and the expectation this summer is it will be difficult for Chelsea to do it.
“Dortmund are not accepting €100million, €120m or €130m they want at least €170, €175m to talk about Erling Haaland – not accept.”
With Chelsea now not in the frame for Haaland, that gives Manchester United an opening when it comes to next year.
The Red Devils want to land the Norway international in 2022, when Edinson Cavani is poised to become a free agent.

United have signed Jadon Sancho from Dortmund this summer, with the England international close friends with Haaland during their time at the Westfalenstadion together.
And they’re hoping Haaland’s close bond with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer can swing the transfer pendulum their way, especially if Chelsea sign Lukaku.
With Tuchel primed to play with just one up front, there doesn’t seem a way the two players would be able to go alongside each other.
Manchester City have also been linked with Haaland but, if they sign Harry Kane, they could drop out of the race.
And Eurosport’s Dean Jones speaking on The Football Terrace podcast, has claimed United are ‘excited’ over the possibility Haaland will be available for next year.

“It hasn’t quite come through as far as Chelsea hoped it would by now, I think it would be fair to say,” he said.
“Borussia Dortmund will be closing the door at the end of the week because they need to focus on the new season. Erling Haaland knows that he has so many options open to him next summer.
“Man United, by the way, are becoming quite excited by all this – the fact that Haaland might still be on the market next summer.”
Jones also revealed that Chelsea were now going to give Lukaku more money than he was on at United.
“When Chelsea first touched base with Lukaku about what they’d be offering, Man City were kind of in the conversation as well,” he said.
“They’d actually offered more money to Lukaku in terms of an initial financial payment, what his wages would be and so on.

“And so, Chelsea weren’t really in the same ballpark. But, since then, things have changed.
“Chelsea have increased their offer, they’re now willing to pay Lukaku not just more than he’s on at Inter Milan but more than he earned at Manchester United.
“He took a pay cut to go to Inter Milan, at United he was on around £200,000-a-week.
“He’ll be getting more than that if he goes to Chelsea, probably closer to £250,000-a-week from what I’m told.
“This is advancing, this story is moving all the time. Yesterday I took so many calls on it because suddenly it became a live story.”
