Chelsea fans take to social media to outline key difference between this season and last season

Chelsea take on Zenit Chelsea began the defence of their Champions League triumph with a tricky tie against Russian outfit Zenit St Petersburg. It turned into something of a dull affair, but Thomas Tuchel’s side ultimately ran out 1-0 winners despite an incredibly underwhelming performance at Stamford Bridge.

This means that Chelsea, also in a group with Juventus and Malmo, sit second in the group behind the Italian side after the first round of fixtures, with Tuchel taking his side to Turin during the next round of games.

Tonight, however, was all about one man.

Chelsea fans react It is safe to say that Romelu Lukaku has already become a fan favourite with the Chelsea faithful following his return to Stamford Bridge. Following his headed finish, those of a blue disposition were quick to take to social media to point out the major difference between last season and this season.

Which is, of course, that they now have a true goal-scoring option in the form of Romelu Lukaku:

We would have drawn 0-0 in this kind of game last season, what a signing Lukaku has been so far.

Lukaku saves us again for what would have been a draw last season #cfc #Lukaku @ChelseaFC

— BleedingBlueFC (@BleedingBluefc) September 14, 2021

That was a 0-0 draw last season for sure.

But not this one. Rom, Rom, Rom, Romelu Lukaku!

A player like Lukaku was what we lacked last season. Without him today there is no way we would have scored. It’s the little things at this level that makes you championship quality.

Lukaku is legit our difference make that we needed last season

Lukaku might be our best signing since Kante, last season we 100% draw this game 0-0

— ً (@FinlayCFC) September 14, 2021

This is why we bought Lukaku!! If this was last season, we would be heading into a frustrating goalless draw

With Lukaku, Chelsea don’t even have to be good to win. They know he’ll gobble up even half a chance. Terrifying for other teams with the defence so solid. #CFC #UCL

Romelu Lukaku, that’s why he’s one of the best in the world, in tough games where you want to break something, team around you not playing the best, you still manage to score a vital goal, amazing.

Just imagine if we had Lukaku in the CL final with those chances we had in the box. Could have been 2/3-0

Hopefully that’s what we can do to teams this season. Already seen against Villa because that’s a 0-0/1-0 win last season.

What a signing Romelu Lukaku was for us!!! #CHEZEN pic.twitter.com/fvN2t4E5N4

Lukaku has scored 4 goals for Chelsea this season, from just 6 shots on target.

Omo, we don finally get striker

— Elvis Tunde ➐ (@Tunnykvng) September 14, 2021

Chelsea would’ve drawn games like this 0-0 last year, adding a world class striker to the team is going to win them so many points this season.

Will Lukaku be the missing piece to fire Chelsea to Premier League glory, as well as helping them retain their Champions League title? Early showings certainly suggest he’ll be a key contributor if they do.
