Chelsea defender provides update on his future as contract talks stall

Chelsea offer stiff resistance in defence Since Thomas Tuchel took charge of Chelsea, the Blues have recorded one of the best defences in Europe.

So far, they have conceded just four times in 11 Premier League outings, with Andreas Christensen playing in eight of those.

Not one of the five Chelsea nominees for this years Ballon D’or, Christensen has nonetheless improved significantly since Tuchel took over, and has become the defender he always threatened to be while away on loan.

Indeed, compatriot Simon Kjaer has backed him to become one of the best defenders in world football, but will it be with Chelsea?

Christensen speaks out on contract decision Now with the Danish national team for fixtures against Scotland and the Faroe Islands, having already qualified for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, Christensen was once again questioned on his future.

However, the 25 year old refused to be drawn into the speculation.

“I will not comment on it, because you know everything that has been written,” Christensen revealed to Danish outlet BT.

“I can’t [recognise stories about me being undervalued] at all. I feel valued, I’m happy, but I don’t get into the contract situation.

The centre-back continued:

“I’m still happy and I enjoy football. I have no idea about it at all, I do not feel that there is any pressure or anything, I just enjoy it.

“I don’t know why everyone thinks it’s a bad situation. [Chelsea] have a player who right now enjoys playing football and the coach shows him confidence. There is no bad relationship, there is nothing.”

While there may be no bad relationship, there is also no agreement on a new contract either. As per Matt Law of the Telegraph:

It is understood the deal was initially delayed over an adjustment in the demands being made by Christensen’s agent and then Chelsea were stunned by a proposal to bring the length of the contract down from five years to three years.

Despite this, Law claims:

There remains a belief and hope inside Chelsea that Christensen will sign a new contract

Every day it doesn’t happen, however, it strengthens the Dane’s stance, meaning Chelsea may eventually be forced to cave to his demands.
