Chelsea have activated a clause to extend Ian Maatsen’s contract with the club until June 2025.

Maatsen’s deal was set to expire at the end of the season with a number of clubs monitoring his situation. Barcelona have been credited with interest in signing the left-back, while both West Ham and Manchester City have been linked in recent weeks.

The 21-year-old returned to Chelsea during the summer after a successful loan spell at Burnley, with the defender named in the EFL Championship Team of the Season after helping the Clarets to promotion.

Burnley had an offer of £32m accepted for Maatsen during the summer, but the Dutchman turned down a permanent transfer to Turf Moor.

Maatsen – who has been included in the senior Netherlands squad for both September and October’s international fixtures – impressed on Chelsea’s pre-season tour, but has failed to start a Premier League fixture this season and has totalled just 84 minutes across six substitute outings.

Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that Chelsea have extended his deal, in a bid to avoid the defender leaving the club on a free transfer.
