Champions League club plotting shock move for £47m United star – report

AS Monaco are reportedly considering making a move for Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana.

Onana could depart United this summer as Ruben Amorim seeks to overhaul his squad following an extremely disappointing 2024/25 season.

Major changes could be on the cards in the goalkeeping department, with neither Onana nor Altay Bayindir managing to impress last season. Both were guilty of several costly errors that significantly hurt the team.

Onana, in particular, has struggled to convince since his arrival from Inter Milan in the summer of 2023. United forked out £47m to land him.  Despite starting 72 Premier League games and registering 18 clean sheets, questions remain over his long-term suitability. There’s a growing belief that for United to progress, a new first-choice goalkeeper may be necessary.

The Cameroonian has attracted interest from Saudi Pro League clubs, and while there are conflicting claims about his future, United are thought to be open to a sale, particularly with other areas of the squad requiring more urgent reinforcements.

Now, French news outlet L’Equipe reveals that Monaco have entered the race to sign Onana.

The Champions League outfit are actively looking to bolster their goalkeeping options, a fact confirmed by CEO Thiago Scuro himself.

In addition to Onana, Monaco also have Chelsea’s Djordje Petrović on their list.

Petrović has returned to Chelsea, but his omission from their FIFA Club World Cup squad suggests he may not be part of the club’s long-term plans.

The Ligue 1 club had also considered former United goalkeeper David de Gea but the Spaniard opted to extend his stay at Fiorentina.

Other alternatives are Marc-André ter Stegen (Barcelona) and Ugurcan Cakir (Trabzonspor).

Their interest in Onana is far from guaranteed to lead to a formal bid, but with Champions League football and the financial means to afford him, United will be hoping they eventually make a move.
