Carrick aiming to join exclusive club in huge matchup with Spurs at Old Trafford

Manchester United welcome Tottenham Hotspur to Old Trafford this Saturday lunchtime. The Red Devils have played the Lilywhites 206 times in their history. United have come out on top 96 times, while they have lost on 58 occasions. There have been 52 draws between the two sides. Here are three storylines to look into ahead of the match. A stunning display tore Manchester City to pieces at Old Trafford, and this was followed up with a battling win at the Emirates versus Arsenal. The performance was not as convincing, but Carrick managed his third win on the spin against Fulham last weekend thanks to a goal from Benjamin Sesko in the dying embers of the match. Should United beat Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday, Carrick will be just the third United manager to win his first four matches in charge. Matt Busby and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer are the only two to have achieved this feat at the moment. The Norwegian faced Cardiff City, AFC Bournemouth, Huddersfield Town, and a pre-Saudi takeover Newcastle United in his four-game run. Should Carrick pull it off tomorrow, he will have faced substantially tougher teams. Poor recent Spurs record Despite Tottenham Hotspur’s domestic struggles in recent years, United have found them an almost impossible nut to crack. The BBC reports that, “Tottenham are unbeaten in their last eight meetings with Manchester United in all competitions (W5 D3).” It is the London side’s longest ever unbeaten run against the Red Devils, and in the “21st century only Chelsea have gone longer against the Red Devils (12 between 2012 and 2017).” In fact, United have not beaten Tottenham Hotspur since Erik ten Hag beat them 2-0 at Old Trafford way back in October 2022. United on a roll The Red Devils have been hard to beat this season in the Premier League and have only lost one of their previous 12 games in the competition. Even this loss was an unlucky 1-2 defeat at Villa Park just before Christmas, where they were easily good enough to snatch a draw. In fact, United are unbeaten in their last seven Premier League matches, and you would need to go back to February 2024 to find the last time they won four on the bounce. The last time they went eight matches without a defeat was, unbelievably, back in February 2022 under Ralf Rangnick.
