Solskjaer won’t blame Fernandes despite penalty miss

Bruno Fernandes has hailed Raphael Varane as “a winner” who can help take Manchester United back to the very top.

Varane, a £34million summer signing from Real Madrid, will make his first Champions League start for United against Villarreal on Wednesday night.

France World Cup winner Varane came on during United’s 2-1 defeat away to Young Boys in their group stage opener, but will start at Old Trafford.

Fernandes reckons Varane, who won four Champions League titles with Real, can help take United’s players to a different level, with his drive and experience.

“Of course, he’s a winner,” said Fernandes. “Everyone knows that. He’s a nice guy and works really hard and is always pushing everyone to do better.

Varane is expected to start Man Utd’s Champions League match against Villarreal on Wednesday “I think he has a great mentality but, at the same time, we cannot forget the other players.

“Rapha has been brilliant, but Victor Lindelof has had an amazing, brilliant beginning to the season.

“Eric Bailly came later because of the Olympic Games, but he’s a player we trust a lot. Harry Maguire we already know is doing really well.

Fernandes has praised Man Utd’s other defenders such as captain Harry Maguire ( Image:

“In football, we all have different qualities, and Rapha has different qualities to Victor, Harry, Eric and Phil, but they can all add different things.

“Still, he’s a little bit shy in some ways, because it’s the beginning for him at United, but I think he’s a leader. I think he can help in that part of the game.”

Varane himself recently revealed the conversation he had with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer before choosing to sign for the club.

He told Norwegian media outlet TV2: “He told me about the club’s plans and the team’s ambitions.

“He also spoke about his experience as a Manchester United player and what it was going to be like for me considering what the team wants to achieve,” the 28-year-old said.

“The talk was a lot about those moments of joy after winning something, and he spoke for a long time about the abilities of this team and what we must do to be winners.”

Varane also spoke to compatriot Paul Pogba prior to putting pen to paper and explained: “He did not have to convince me that I should move here, but I talked to him about the club to find out what it is like to be here day-to-day.

The France international added: “It was important for me to hear his opinions and thoughts about the club, the team and their ambitions.”
