‘Bothered me a bit’: Man United star admits he was ‘annoyed’ when Erik ten Hag moved him to a new position

Manchester United winger Antony has opened up on Erik ten Hag’s decision to play him in a new position.

Since moving to Manchester United back in the summer of 2022, Antony has struggled to make an impact for the Red Devils and has consistently struggled to impress at Old Trafford.

Antony has been poor during pre-season as the Brazilian prepares for his third season at Old Trafford and it is becoming clear that this may be the last chance saloon for the former Ajax winger.

Ahead of the new season, Antony has been speaking out about last season and also opened up about a new position he had to play under Erik ten Hag.

Antony on playing at left-back

With Jadon Sancho returning to United, Antony may well suffer as a result and a new position could be the way for the Brazilian to break into the first team.

Last season, Luke Shaw’s injury problems meant that players had to deputies in this role and Antony was one of those players who had to play in that role.

Speaking to the BBC, Antony was asked about his thoughts on playing in a new role and he didn’t hide his annoyance.

“A lot happened last season,” Antony began. “I played full-back and was a little uneasy about it, but that was because with the team losing or drawing you want to be in the attack to turn things around and help the team.

“Being moved into defence bothered me a bit. You feel annoyed in the moment during the game, but afterwards it’s all fine.

“I have tremendous affection for Erik and he has a lot of affection for me. He’s a great coach and he knows he can rely upon me.”

Antony is on his last chance

Antony set United back around £95 million, but apart from three goals in three consecutive games after his debut, the Brazilian has not performed at the level required.

Antony’s inconsistency, or his inability to use his right foot, has meant that fans have very quickly lost patience with the 24-year-old.

Antony’s agent Junior Pedrosa had previously told UnitedInFocus that the winger was set to stay this summer and it seems he will be given first-team chances, despite Amad Diallo’s brilliant pre-season performances.

Besiktas had ‘vetoed’ a move for Antony so it seems the options are limited for the 24-year-old.
