Lead coach Adam Lawrence called it “the carrot” for his players to progress in the FA Youth Cup: the opportunity to play at Arsenal’s Emirates Stadium in a mouth-watering quarter-final.

On Friday, our talented Under-18s side — reigning English champions — continue writing their own chapter in the wonderful tale of United in the Youth Cup. With three five-goal wins, confidence is high for our first trip to north London in this prestigious competition since a 2007 semi-final starring Danny Welbeck and Tom Cleverley.

“This is an amazing opportunity,” Nick Cox, Director of Academy, explained to UR.

“We’ve had regular opportunities in recent years to play at Old Trafford and it’s of great importance for our boys to become familiar with our own ground. Practising in an arena where you’ll play games if you reach our first team is within our control and we do that regularly.

“We don’t quite as frequently get the opportunity to play in Premier League stadiums away from home. We’ve had some lovely experiences in the National League Cup and EFL Trophy, playing at first-team stadiums, and that’s great, but to play at another Premier League is an exciting one and a development opportunity.

Youth Cup preview | Hear from Lawrence, Scanlon, Obi and more ahead of Friday’s quarter-final at Arsenal…

“It’s always important to play in a stadium where you’re the away team and the crowd are going to be against you and while we have great away followings, for your own support to be outnumbered by the home fans, to play in arena you’re unfamiliar with that brings some nerves.

“And naturally in terms of the actual match itself, we’re always keen to make sure our boys go up against the best players around and Arsenal have a wonderful youth system and develop great players so it’s great for our boys to have an opportunity to go up against a really good team.

“We also really like the jeopardy that the competitions we enter facilitate and the jeopardy of an away Youth Cup quarter-final is really exciting one. We hope we’ll overcome that challenge, but ultimately, whatever way it goes, there’s an experience to be had that all these young players will add to their armoury, in terms of what they learn on the night and how they’ll use that in their careers moving forward.”

THE STORY SO FAR

ROUND THREE: 5-1 v COVENTRY CITY (Biancheri 3, Obi 2) – 18 December

Seeking to right the wrong of both last season’s early exit and the previous week’s UEFA Youth League defeat, United wasted little time by scoring three goals in the opening 13 minutes.

“It’s always nice to get a dominant performance in the first game,” reviewed lead coach Adam Lawrence.

“The boys attacked them in a variety of ways. Once we got that lead, it was about the good habits, being professional in the right moments. We did that, killed the game off and were comfortable.”

ROUND FOUR: 5-2 v PRESTON NORTH END (J. Fletcher, Munro, Obi 2, Ibragimov) – 17 January

Another fast start at Leigh established a four-goal half-time lead against PNE, who had put four past Liverpool in the previous round. United overcame the visitors’ second-half resurgence to triumph.

“The boys got into a rhythm well,” Lawrence said.

“With a four-goal half-time lead you want to maintain that, but there’s some lessons for our lads because Preston did well. They tested us.”

ROUND FIVE: 5-1 v CHELSEA (Obi 3, Scanlon 2) – 12 February

After going behind, United showed grit, composure and then real quality to establish a 3-1 half-time lead and prove themselves against the toughest opposition yet. James Scanlon scored two and Chido Obi a clinical hat-trick in an impressive, hard-working team performance that left little doubt as to United’s potential for further Youth Cup success.

“It was a real team effort,” reviews Lawrence.

“But also a really good night for the goalscorers. Obviously Chido is a natural goalscorer, but I was really pleased with his link-up play – not just stretching and running in behind but recognising when to show into feet,  how to use his body to shield the ball and when to bring others into play. And it was nice for Scanners because he got the rewards for the runs he was making.”

HOW TO WATCH AND FOLLOW

With apologies to MUTV subscribers, we are unable to show Friday’s game due to FA regulations. Arsenal, as the home team, are permitted to do so, and the FA will stream the game on their YouTube channel.

Instead, we will offer updates, interviews, highlights and reaction from the Emirates Stadium.

Fans wishing to attend the game are encouraged to do so and can buy their tickets from Arsenal’s website, here.

ARSENAL’S JOURNEY

Friday’s opponents have enjoyed a rockier route to the quarter-final. Two goals from the prolific Dan Casey helped them survive a third-round scare against non-league Hertford Town. Andre Harriman-Annous scored one of the others in a 4-3 win and then netted in the subsequent 3-3 draw v QPR, in which 15-year-old Max Dowman – who has made headlines for training with the first team – also netted. Arsenal won 4-3 on penalties, with key saves from Jack Porter, who made a senior debut in the Carabao Cup last autumn. Schoolboy Dowman netted again in round five in a calmer performance, with Harriman-Anous scoring in a third consecutive game in a 2-1 win.

Arsenal are seven-time Youth Cup winners (1966, 1971, 1988, 1994, 2000, 2001 and 2009) and most recently reached the final in 2023 when a Jack Wilshere-managed side were beaten 5-1 by West Ham at the Emirates Stadium.

OUR LAST YOUTH CUP GAME AT THE EMIRATES

A then-record crowd of 38,187 watched our last FA Youth Cup game at the Emirates Stadium, in 2007. It was a meeting between two talented sides whose players were aiming to progress into their title-challenging — or title-winning, in United’s case — senior squads. And the Arsene Wenger-Sir Alex Ferguson rivalry impacted this game, too. Ahead of the semi-final first leg, Sir Alex got stuck in.

“The young players at Arsenal get credit for being the best in the land but I believe they’re not as good as our young players,” he said.

United’s FA Youth Cup team from 2007, before the semi-final second leg against Arsenal. How many can you recognise?

In north London, Kieran Gibbs scored the game’s only goal to give Arsenal an advantage to take to Old Trafford where an epic followed. Danny Welbeck proved the hero in a 4-2 extra-time victory. Welbeck and team-mate Tom Cleverley later played 221 times for United between them. Welbeck, of course, remains a regular Premier League starter, at Brighton, while Cleverley is enjoying his first managerial job at Watford.

Others in United’s squad that day include Ben Amos (295 Football League appearances), James Chester (424 EFL appearances, 35 Wales caps), Craig Cathcart (390 EFL appearances, 61 Northern Ireland caps) and Danny Drinkwater (314 EFL apps, 3 England caps).

Fernandes gives bleak assessment of Amorim system at Man Utd: ‘It’s not working’

Bruno Fernandes insists what Ruben Amorim is trying to implement at Man Utd is “not working” despite their 3-2 win over Ipswich Town on Wednesday night.

The Red Devils put in another underwhelming performance to defeat the Tractor Boys at Old Trafford with Patrick Dorgu’s first-half sending off making things even tougher for Man Utd.

An own-goal from Sam Morsy, a close-range finish from Matthijs de Ligt and a header from Harry Maguire was enough to secure three points for the Red Devils as they cancelled out a Jaden Philogene brace.

Man Utd are now up to 14th in the Premier League table and 16 points away from the relegation zone, while Amorim has now won just five of his 16 league matches since joining the club in November.

Amorim has attempted to bring the high-intensity football that worked so well for him at Sporting CP to Old Trafford but his players have struggled to adapt to his playing style, philosophy and formation.

And Fernandes admitted that it’s feels like Amorim’s philosophy “is not working” at times but urged his Man Utd team-mates to trust in the process that his compatriot is trying to implement.

Fernandes told TNT Sports: “Me and H (Harry Maguire) have been here for a while already, so we know that we have to stick to what we’ve been trying to do in training [and] what we’re supposed to do.

“It could be that you could feel in moments that it’s not working, but for some reason, the manager wants us to do that – and if he wants us to do that… they (the coaches) watch so many games, they prepare themselves (for our matches).

“We have so many staff – not only the ones who came with him but the ones who were already here. We have great people behind the team to work on that, so if they do that in the right way, we just have to come on the pitch and show it. As I said, we need to have more confidence [and] be more brave to show our character and our qualities.”

Results and performances have been worse under Amorim than Erik ten Hag and Paul Merson thinks the Man Utd boss is now “the problem” at Old Trafford.

Merson told Sky Sports: “Ruben Amorim is the problem at Manchester United. The three at the back isn’t working the way he’d planned. So, change it.

“He’s not helping the players, he’s helping himself by just keeping it the way he’s been used to playing all his managerial career or most of it.

“Top managers are flexible. They go, you know what, I don’t really want to play this way, but I’ve got to play to the players’ strengths, and then when I can get my players in at the end of the season, I’ll go back to playing the way I want to play. But, at the moment, they need to start playing a different way because they won’t beat Real Sociedad [their next Europa League match], playing like this.

“I don’t think they will move Amorim on either. They don’t have the money to start all over again. They’ll have to go with this man. But my worry is, we all know that they can’t play three at the back, we know they’re all over the place.

“They haven’t got the feet and the legs in midfield. So change it. He [Amorim] keeps on sending these players out to fail and, at the moment, that’s what’s happening every other week.”

Merson added: “This Man United team won’t win the Premier League. They need five or six players, so why not just play to their strengths, get through this season, and then go and get the players you need?”

Ferdinand slams two Man Utd stars in Ipswich win as he gives ‘brutally honest’ Amorim assessment

Man Utd legend Rio Ferdinand has hit out at two players after their narrow win over Ipswich, while giving a “brutally honest” assessment of Ruben Amorim.

The Red Devils moved up to 14th in the Premier League by beating the Tractor Boys on Wednesday evening but they didn’t make it easy for themselves.

A mix-up between Andre Onana and Patrick Dorgu allowed Jaden Philogene to walk the ball into an empty net just four minutes into the game at Old Trafford.

Man Utd then struck back through a Sam Morsy own-goal and a Matthijs de Ligt strike, as they approached half-time in the lead – but Patrick Dorgu’s sending off on 43 minutes gave the visitors a man advantage.

Amorim’s side threw away the lead just before the interval when a ball into the box from Philogene went all the way into the net.

And it came to former captain Harry Maguire to save the day once again with a thumping header just after half-time, which eventually proved enough for Man Utd to seal all three points in a 3-2 win.

Offering his assessment of the Amorim era so far, Ferdinand told TNT Sports: “I think if we’re being brutally honest, there hasn’t been the progress that we all anticipated.

“Where he came from, how successful he had been and the silverware he brought to Sporting, the anticipation of him coming was like, “Wow! What an opportunity we’ve got now with this young manager”, and it hasn’t transferred here.”

The Man Utd legend added: “I think he needs to just get to the end of the season, really regroup and then start building again, building the team and coaching the team because right now they’ve been stuttering along and that’s probably being polite.”

Amorim has attempted to bring his playing style, formation and philosophy from Sporting CP to this Man Utd team and it hasn’t worked so far.

Ferdinand continued: “I watched Sporting a few times, in Europe especially. They were an athletic, dynamic team. That was one of the staples of that team, the hallmarks of that good team that was winning things,’ he explained.

“This team aren’t a mobile, dynamic team.

“If you look through the heartbeat of this team they have other qualities but being physical, having the ability to overrun teams physically – they don’t have that capacity.”

Ferdinand criticised the early mix-up between Onana and Dorgu, he said: “A terrible start. I don’t think Dorgu, at any moment, looks up to sees where Onana is.

“Onana doesn’t need to come in. The full-back is in complete control and he can just hold his ground and let him play it back to him.

“But Dorgu doesn’t look, the awareness isn’t there and it’s pounced on. Ipswich took a deserved lead for pouncing on that lack of communication.”

United face stiff competition for Serie A champion with Real Madrid hot on his heels – report

Real Madrid have enquired about Manchester United transfer target Federico Dimarco.

The Inter Milan left wing-back is one of a number of defensive options that have been linked with a move to Old Trafford lately.

The Red Devils did sign Patrick Dorgu from Lecce last month and he has largely impressed despite receiving a straight red card in yesterday’s match against Ipswich Town.

United have also been linked to Sporting CP’s Geovany Quenda to strengthen their wing-back options but Dimarco has also been a name on the list.

It was reported in December that United would go head-to-head with rivals Manchester City for the Italian international’s signature.

It was also relayed here that Ruben Amorim’s side had made an approach for the defender in the winter market before signing Dorgu.

It now seems United will face stiff competition if they decide to make another effort to sign the wing-back.

FCInterNews report that DiMarco’s name has been on “the Merengues’ notebook for some time” after failing to convince Alphonso Davies to leave Bayern Munich.

What’s more, it is believed that the Spanish giants may hold an ace up their sleeve due to the Italian’s agency.

The defender is “approachable” for the European champions as “his agency, Roc Nation Sports, is the same one that looks after the interests of Vinicius Jr and in the discussions for the renewal of the Brazilian, the club’s management asked for information on the Milanese full-back.”

Nonetheless, despite their interest, it will be tough for Madrid, United or any club to convince Dimarco to abandon the team that he came through the youth ranks at.

The wing-back “has no intention of leaving Inter” according to the site and will look to sign a new contract as his current deal expires in 2027.

90% pass accuracy, 4 duels won: United Women starlet continues to grow reputation on world stage

Manchester United Women stars Ella Toone and Grace Clinton played a key role in England’s victory over world champions Spain in the Nations League.

The Lionesses came out on top 1-0 at Wembley Stadium after Jess Park scored after 33 minutes.

The victory sees England remain in second in the group, just behind Portugal on goal difference.

Grace Clinton once again started in the middle of the park and impressed against a tough Spanish side.

The youngster played the entire 90 minutes and had 75 touches of the ball.

She was successful in 90% of her passes, connecting with 43 out of 48.

Clinton made one key pass in the match and two out of her three long ball attempts were successful. She also had a shot on target against the world champions.

She was competitive in defence but only won four out of her 13 ground duels and lost her only aerial battle.

Ella Toone also played a significant portion of the game, coming off after 84 minutes. She played in a deeper midfield role than she would usually for United and as a result could not influence the game in the same way from an attacking perspective.

The 25 year old had 43 touches and a passing percentage of 88%.

She had one successful cross and connected with one out of her two long ball attempts.

Toone had a rare quiet night in front of goal as she only attempted one shot that went off target.

She also only completed one ground duel which she lost and attempted no aerial battles.

Toone and Clinton will next be in action for United when they host Leicester City this Sunday lunchtime.

94% pass accuracy, 80% ground duels won: United loanee makes big contribution in spite of shock defeat

Manchester United’s Tyrell Malacia put in a decent shift for PSV Eindhoven despite their shock defeat to Go Ahead Eagles last night.

The Dutch defender was named in the starting eleven but they were beaten 1-2 at home by their opponents.

Despite having 24 shots on goal and 69% of the possession they could not find an equaliser at the Philips Stadion.

The United defender played the entire 90 minutes and was given a rating of 6.9 on Sofascore for his evening’s work.

He made one clearance and one interception as he was not asked to do much defending in the match.

Malacia also made a total of three tackles in the game.

The 25 year old was also effective in his duels as he won 80% of his ground duels but did not compete in any aerial battles during the match.

The left back was heavily involved in an attacking sense as the home side dictated the majority of the play in spite of the defeat.

He had 82 touches of the ball and completed a mammoth 94% of his passes, making 51 out of 54 attempts.

The left back also had one key pass in the match as his side searched for an equaliser.

Malacia attempted numerous crosses as PSV utilised the wide areas but could only connect with three of his nine crossing attempts.

It was only his third match for his new side and his second start as the Dutch club are easing him into action after such a long injury lay-off.

He will likely next be involved when PSV travel to face the same opponents this Saturday afternoon. The United man will also likely have one eye on next week’s huge Champions League tie against Arsenal, where he will be hoping to play a significant part in proceedings.

Man Utd insider claims Amorim is ‘destroying the morale in the dressing room’ after Ipswich win

Man Utd boss Ruben Amorim has “made some ridiculous statements” that are “destroying the morale in the dressing room”, according to one insider.

The Red Devils narrowly beat relegation-threatened Ipswich Town 3-2 on Wednesday night as Ruben Amorim’s side came from behind to win.

An own-goal from Sam Morsy and a close-range Matthijs de Ligt finish cancelled out Jaden Philogene’s early opener after a mix-up between Andre Onana and Patrick Dorgu.

Dorgu, who was a January signing from Lecce, was then sent off late on in the second half for Man Utd before Philogene equalised for Ipswich with his second goal of the evening in first-half injury time.

Harry Maguire’s thumping header shortly after half-time put Man Utd back in front and Amorim’s men hung on for three points in another underwhelming performance.

Amorim has now won five of his first 16 Premier League matches in charge of Man Utd with the Red Devils moving up to 14th in the table after beating the Tractor Boys.

The Portuguese head coach told the media last month that Man Utd are “maybe the worst” side in their 147-year history and admitted after their recent 2-2 draw against Everton that “if I knew what to change, I would change it”.

And now former Man Utd chief scout Mick Brown – who is still well-connected at Old Trafford and in the Premier League – claims that some of his public statements are “destroying the morale in the dressing room”.

Brown told Football Insider: “He comes out with some statements that would be better left unsaid. It’s his way of going about things, but I think it shows his lack of experience in England and in the Premier League.

“Making those types of statements usually comes back to bite you. He might think it’s ‘the worst team in Man United history’ but he can’t say that. It’s destroying the morale in the dressing room.

“For the players to hear that – it’s not going to do them any good. He’s made some ridiculous statements, in my judgement, which really don’t do him any favours.

“Now, he comes out saying if he knew what the problems were, he’d fix them. It’s his job to know what the problems are.

“He’s managed about 20 games since he came in – that should be more than enough time to establish what issues you’ve got.

“There are serious questions being asked which, as of yet, he’s failed to answer. I’ve got nothing against Amorim, I’m sure he’s a good person and a good coach, but he’s now learning a lot about Manchester United.”

“I have no idea why”: Ferdinand and Savage tear into United star after horror show against Ipswich

Manchester United’s Andre Onana has been heavily criticised by TNT pundits Rio Ferdinand and Robbie Savage.

The Cameroonian keeper started the season relatively well, keeping a few clean sheets and won the save of the month against Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park in September.

Nonetheless, since Ruben Amorim has become manager, the goalkeeper’s form has dropped immensely. He has made some huge mistakes and been generally poor.

He made two big errors that led to goals against Brighton and Hove Albion last month and he was also responsible for the two efforts United conceded yesterday.

A poor mix-up between Patrick Dorgu and himself resulted in Ipswich scoring into an empty net and the second goal drifted into the bottom corner when he failed to track the flight of a seemingly standard ball into the box.

On commentary for TNT Sports (via The Daily Mail), Savage was in shock at what he had just seen when the Tractor Boys grabbed an early lead after just four minutes of action.

Describing the goal he stated, “Wow. Dorgu has tracked the run and the communication between Onana and Dorgu must be non-existent.”

“Credit to Jaden Philogene, the desire… he’s onside. But I’ve got no idea why Onana is running out to that position. Dorgu has got it under control, no problem at all. He shouldn’t come there, Onana!”

Whilst laying more blame at the feet of Dorgu, Rio Ferdinand also echoed Savage’s concern over the keeper and said, “a terrible start. I don’t think Dorgu, at any moment, looks up to sees where Onana is.”

“Onana doesn’t need to come in. The full-back is in complete control and he can just hold his ground and let him play it back to him. But Dorgu doesn’t look, the awareness isn’t there and it’s pounced on. Ipswich took a deserved lead for pouncing on that lack of communication.”

Former Man United goalkeeper Tim Howard also singled Onana out for his poor keeping when United drew with Everton last weekend.

It was also relayed by The Peoples Person that United’s coaching staff are growing more “concerned” by Onana’s performances and that head coach, Ruben Amorim, has no “loyalty” to the former Ajax keeper and may look to replace him in the summer, as his patience is wearing thin with his erratic displays.

Dorgu set to miss these key games, Amorim has a selection nightmare on his hands

Manchester United battled back despite going a goal down and a man down to eventually clinch all three points thanks to a hard-fought 3-2 win over Ipswich Town in the Premier League on Wednesday.

What made the victory even sweeter was that all three goals on the night came from set-pieces, an aspect in which the Red Devils have been pretty weak throughout the season.

The biggest talking point of the game was obviously Patrick Dorgu’s 43rd minute red card. It was a difficult night for the Dane who was starting his first Premier League game at Old Trafford since his January move.

The 20-year-old was shown a straight red following a lengthy VAR review and on-field referral after he caught Omari Hutchinson high up on his left leg.

Dorgu red card was coming after what happened vs Everton

In slow-motion it looked worse than it was with the wingback actually getting a touch on the ball first before his momentum saw him clatter into the Ipswich attacker in a dangerous way.

There was no malice whatsoever but as soon as VAR got involved, it almost seemed destined that he would be shown a red card, especially after United’s reprieve at Goodison Park last time out.

The discourse throughout the week was all about how lucky United had got and how the referees had got the penalty call all wrong.

Whether the Red Devils will appeal or not remains to be seen but the direct red card means the former Lecce star will miss the next three domestic games.

And straight reds for violent conduct get carried forward from the competition in which it was awarded to the domestic cup competitions as well.

Dorgu will miss three domestic games

And that means he will be unavailable for Sunday’s FA Cup tie against Fulham, following which he is also ruled out for the Arsenal game at home and Leicester City away in the Premier League.

Dorgu will be available for selection for United’s Europa League games against Real Sociedad as those games fall under the UEFA jurisdiction.

As a result, Amorim will once again have to play Diogo Dalot on the left despite another poor display against the Tractor Boys while Noussair Mazraoui is likely to slot in at right wingback.

Dorgu will be a huge miss but Wednesday’s win will surely do a lot for the team’s confidence and fans will be hoping to see more of the same fire in the FA Cup on Sunday, a competition which represents a genuine shot at silverware this season.

United follow in footsteps of two PL rival clubs after latest “crazy” decision, it’s simply “madness” – report

Manchester United are reportedly set to play two friendlies during their trip to Asia, immediately after the 2024/25 Premier League season comes to a halt at the end of May.

At the end of last term, Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle both jetted to Australia for an end-of-season friendly.

The decision drew widespread criticism, with legendary striker Alan Shearer describing it as “madness,” amidst increasing concerns over player workload and a surge in injuries.

Shearer also said, “Can you imagine if you’re a player who is playing in either the Copa America or Euro 2024 having to do that? Madness.”

“Crazy. I wouldn’t be happy at all. It’s crazy for Newcastle to go and play Spurs there on Wednesday night and then another game.”

However, according to Simon Stone of BBC, United are set to become the latest top-flight English side to make a post-season trip overseas.

A previous report covered by The Peoples Person relayed that the trip could net the club around £10m.

Now, Stone states that the Red Devils are poised to play two matches in Malaysia and Hong Kong following their final Premier League match of the campaign against Aston Villa on Sunday, May 25.

Stone adds, “While nothing is signed off yet, it is almost certain United will head to the Far East for two fixtures against opposition yet to be agreed.”

“There is a window of a week between the last match against Aston Villa on 25 May and the Champions League final on 31 May, after which players have to be released for international duty.”

“United have a massive fan base in Malaysia and Malaysia Airlines is the club’s official commercial airline partner. However, they last played in the country in 2009, while they last went to Hong Kong in 2013.”

This decision comes just days after United confirmed they will make hundreds of more staff redundancies in a bid to return the club to profitability.

United have posted losses of more than £300million over the past five years despite generating record revenues and the hierarchy led by Sir Jim Ratcliffe has been scrambling to find ways to generate more income.

As Stone points out, playing matches abroad is one way of doing this. In his press conference ahead of Wednesday’s meeting with Ipswich Town, Ruben Amorim admitted that he and his players are partly to blame for the club’s off-the-pitch woes.

After the Asia trip, Amorim’s squad will have a short break before heading to the United States for their pre-season tour ahead of the 2025/26 season.
