“Win-win-win situation:” United to cash in as Bayern and Barca race to sign unwanted attacker – report

Manchester United may have a lucrative opportunity to offload Marcus Rashford for a handsome fee if recent reports are to be believed.

Currently, Rashford is enjoying a loan spell at Villa Park which is set to conclude at the end of the season. During this time, he has greatly improved on the form he exhibited at Man United.

Last weekend, The Peoples Person noted how Rashford was leading the Premier League in three key statistics, namely, most big chances, most assists, and most dribbles.

Thanks to the revival of Rashford’s career, it appears that several high-profile clubs have taken an interest in the Englishman, hoping to sign him on a permanent basis.

Former United chief scout and Aston Villa scout Mick Brown has claimed that FC Barcelona and Bayern Munich are determined to pursue Rashford.

“I hear Barcelona and Bayern Munich are looking at him,” Brown told Football Insider.

“If he keeps performing to his best level, it’s a three-way win-win-win situation. Villa win because they get a very good player for six months, Marcus wins because he has the opportunity to show off his talent and potential, earn a big move.”

Brown also mentioned how a deal would benefit United, explaining that “Man United win because they’re more likely to get their highest-paid player off the books rather than having an unhappy player at the club.”

“If these top clubs are interested and they come in, his value will shoot up. United will look to drive his price tag up and make as much money as they can from him,” Brown insisted.

Earlier today, The Peoples Person relayed that Rashford is keen on staying at Villa on a permanent deal once his loan lapses.

Still, the appeal of Bayern and Barcelona could just peak Rashford’s interest.

Regardless of who wins the race for Rashford, the player’s departure will be a net positive for United. Not only has he lost the faith of manager Ruben Amorim as well as much of the United fanbase, but a transfer race could drive his price tag upwards, providing the club with more funds to spend in the summer market.

Four April games moved for television

Friday 28 February 2025 12:00

Changes have been made to four of Manchester United’s five Premier League fixtures in April, including the Manchester derby.

Our Old Trafford meeting with Wolves remains in the traditional 15:00 BST kick-off slot on Saturday 19 April, but the matches against Nottingham Forest, Manchester City, Newcastle United and Bournemouth have all been moved for television.

The start time of United’s trip to the City Ground on Tuesday 1 April has been put back by 15 minutes to 20:00 BST, as TNT Sports are now showing the Forest fixture live.

Five days later, we will look to complete a league double over our crosstown rivals in the 196th derby, at Old Trafford.

The duel with Pep Guardiola’s side is a 16:30 BST kick-off on that Sunday, and Sky Sports are broadcasting it live in the UK.

There’s also another Sky Super Sunday date for the following weekend, as we travel to Newcastle.

Wolves’ visit to M16 on Easter Saturday is unaffected by the latest Premier League announcement, but our final top-flight encounter of April will now take place on Sunday 27 April.

Bournemouth are having a great season under Andoni Iraola and will hope to still be in the race for the European spots when they welcome us to the Vitality Stadium for a 14:00 BST kick-off.

Of course, United are also involved in the Europa League and Emirates FA Cup and may still have an interest in these competitions come the fourth month of 2025.

If we overcome Real Sociedad, we would play our Europa League quarter-final games on 10 and 17 April, against either FCSB or Lyon.

This year’s FA Cup semi-finals are scheduled to take place across the final weekend in April, and the Cherries clash would change if either we or Bournemouth make it that far.

United host Fulham in the fifth round on Sunday and tickets for the Old Trafford clash are still available to all fans.

Match preview: United Women v Leicester

Friday 28 February 2025 10:12

Manchester United will be aiming to make a winning return from the international break when hosting Leicester City in the Barclays Women’s Super League on Sunday.

Marc Skinner’s Reds have won on each of our last six outings in the competition, and go into the 12:30 GMT kick-off full of confidence as we look to extend a run that has seen us rise up to second in the table.

United can also take belief into the Leigh Sports Village clash on the back of triumphing 2-0 in November’s reverse fixture between the sides, ensuring we have been victorious in all but one of our seven WSL meetings with the Foxes over the years.

Ahead of our eighth league duel with the east Midlanders, we’ve got everything you need to know in this match preview, from ticket information to the latest team news and more…

HOW TO WATCH AND FOLLOW

Tickets and hospitality packages are available for the lunchtime encounter at LSV.

If you aren’t able to join us in Leigh, you can watch the action in the UK via the BBC Red Button, BBC iPlayer and BBC Sport website.

As always, we will also keep you across what’s going on with updates in the United app, where shorts and extended cuts of the highlights will be viewable from midday on Monday.

TEAM NEWS

Skinner told reporters in this morning’s pre-match press conference that midfielder Lisa Naalsund could potentially make her return from long-term injury in next weekend’s Adobe Women’s FA Cup tie against Sunderland, although this game against the Foxes comes just too soon.

The boss also said that Phallon Tullis-Joyce and Hinata Miyazawa are set to land back in England today, after their involvements in the Stateside SheBelieves Cup, which Miyazawa’s Japan won earlier this week.

Leicester forward Yuka Momiki scored the opening goal of Japan’s decisive 2-1 success over the United States on Thursday, and it is currently unclear whether she – or compatriot Saori Takarada, who also faced the USA – will be involved at the weekend.

However, Foxes manager Amandine Miquel did say that her team has picked up no fresh injury concerns from the international break, while updating journalists during her own pre-match media briefing.

OPPOSITION REPORT

Only goal difference spared Miquel’s team from being inside the WSL’s relegation zone after a 4-0 defeat to Manchester City in December, but the Foxes have since enjoyed a marked change in fortunes after drawing 1-1 with Chelsea six days later, becoming the only side to stop the runaway leaders winning all 24 of their matches this season.

Since the turn of the year, Leicester have doubled their goal, points and wins tallies and now have a six-point buffer to the one-team drop zone, which is currently occupied by Crystal Palace.

That gap was extended to six with an impressive 3-0 victory over Midlands rivals Aston Villa, who they have leapfrogged in the standings as a result of that victory on their last outing, nearly two weeks ago.

Belgium international midfielder Janice Cayman scored twice in that win and provided important goals in recent weeks with Jutta Rantala and Lena Petermann – two of the Foxes’ top scorers last season – sidelined through injury.

Cayman also scored in Leicester’s 2-1 win over Liverpool in January.

DID YOU KNOW?

This weekend Manchester United will be aiming to become the first team in Women’s Super League history to score inside the opening 10 minutes in four consecutive games; only Everton and Spurs (both five) have conceded more times this season than Leicester (four) in that period.

Man Utd outcast Rashford ‘stuns’ Villa stars with one detail amid ‘two sides’ to ‘brutal’ Amorim ‘castigation’

According to reports, Marcus Rashford has ‘stunned’ some of his Aston Villa teammates since leaving Manchester United during the January transfer window.

Rashford left boyhood club Man Utd towards the end of the winter transfer window as he joined Aston Villa on loan with an option to buy for around £40m.

It was hoped that the appointment of Ruben Amorim could kickstart Rashford’s career at Man Utd, but the forward butted heads with the head coach on several occasions before he announced his intention to leave.

FC Barcelona were consistently mooted as Rashford’s preferred destination in January, while AC Milan, Borussia Dortmund, Juventus and Napoli were also mentioned.

Despite this, Rashford’s poor form in the previous 18 months and his massive salary proved huge stumbling blocks before Aston Villa swooped after selling Jhon Duran to Al Nassr.

Aston Villa are in the top ten of the Premier League net spend table after the winter window and Rashford has made a positive impression since leaving Man Utd.

Rashford has been eased into the fold by head coach Unai Emery, but he contributed two assists off the bench in their 2-1 win against Chelsea.

Now, a report from The i has gone ‘inside Rashford’s first month at Aston Villa’ after ‘a brutal, prolonged public castigation by United manager Amorim’ led to his exit.

On Emery’s ‘response’ to this treatment, the report claims:

‘It was the coldest of cold shoulders, but Unai Emery has responded by placing a more comforting arm around the forward.

‘The Villa manager, who sold his vision of Rashford’s rehabilitation in a phone call, has spent much time working one-on-one with the forward, mainly concentrating on positional play and tactical understanding.’

The report has also commented on Rashford’s attitude in training as he’s left teammates ‘stunned’.

‘He is staying in a hotel close to Villa’s Bodymoor Heath training ground and has impressed coaches with the extra work he is putting in. He arrived at the club with one of the lowest body fat percentages, but there was almost two months before his last game for United, 56 minutes in a Europa League game against Viktoria Plzen, and his debut for Villa in the FA Cup against Tottenham Hotspur.

‘Villa’s interest changed everything. They were a club competing in the Champions League and for the Champions League – but far enough removed from his boyhood club that it did not feel as though he was slighting them.

‘He knows a few of the players from his England days and is said to have settled in well, has been nothing but polite and friendly with staff, only wanting to get his head down, work hard, and start enjoying football again.

‘One source said the players have been stunned by his ability in training – that he has frequently stood out in a squad packed full of talent.

‘The day after he signed, on 2 February, Villa’s players were given two days off with no game for eight days. But Rashford went into training anyway, working with a fitness coach on the grass and in the gym, in punishing sessions demonstrating his speed and strength.

‘He was keen to show his new employers that there were two sides to the story Amorim was telling in press conferences; that he wasn’t giving maximum effort in training, that he didn’t understand football the way the coach did, that he would prefer to put his 63-year-old goalkeeper coach Jorge Vital on the bench instead of the forward.’

Historic match-up due to take place in May amidst rising levels of fan fury at United’s owners

FC United of Manchester will take on Manchester United legends at Broadhurst Park later this year.

The club competes in the Northern Premier League Premier Division, which is the seventh tier of the English football system.

FC United were set up in 2005 by Manchester United supporters opposed to American businessman Malcolm Glazer’s takeover of the club.

After Heart of Midlothian and Exeter City, FC United is the third-largest fan-owned football club in the United Kingdom by number of members.

This year marks the 20th anniversary of the club and they will celebrate by playing a match against Man United legends.

The Manchester Evening News reports “Manchester United icon Wes Brown has been unveiled as part of a legends team which will take part in a historic football match against FC United of Manchester.”

“The team of United legends will be taking to the pitch against FC United of Manchester as part of celebrations for its 20th anniversary. Brown joins a star-studded team who will compete against The Red Rebels in front of their home crowd.”

FC United of Manchester’s team will also be a legends one and the match will take place on the 18th of May.

Brown will be joined by David May, Lee Martin, Russell Beardsmore, Keith Gillespie and Danny Webber with more players set to be named soon.

“FC United’s line-up will feature players who have been pivotal to the club’s development including their all-time top goalscorer, Tom Greaves, most-capped player Jerome Wright, and the club’s FA Cup hero Michael Norton. The trio will also be joined by former captain Dave Brown and fans’ favourite from the club’s inaugural season, Joz Mitten.”

The match is significant as it is the first ever match between representatives of both teams since the breakaway.

The context of the match is also interesting due to the increasing mainstream dissatisfaction with the club’s owners owing to rising debt, hiked up match day tickets and cuts in most departments.

In fact, there is a fan protest scheduled for the 9th of March when United welcome Arsenal to Old Trafford in the league.

Revitalised United star steals the show at team-bonding session that has already borne fruit – report

Manchester United’s players enjoyed a team-bonding night out earlier this month with new signing Joshua Zirkzee particularly stealing the show.

The Red Devils have frequently been criticised for lacking heart and stomach to fight for one another this season after they have regularly capitulated under the slightest of pressure in matches.

There have been green shoots of recovery recently however when the team beat Arsenal on penalties in the FA Cup despite playing well over an hour with ten men including extra time.

What’s more, the team also dug in to beat Ipswich Town 3-2 during the week despite playing the entire second half with ten men and this fight was characterised by Noussair Mazraoui and Zirkzee running to the aid of Manuel Ugarte during a scrap with Liam Delap late in the match.

The Daily Mail reports that the “players were spotted going to Lane 7 bowling alley in Altrincham before having dinner at Brazilian restaurant Jardim Rodizio” earlier this month.

The event was organised by captain Bruno Fernandes as he booked transport and made arrangements for the squad to spend two hours playing darts, pool, table tennis and basketball in addition to the bowling before they had dinner at 7pm.

United’s new signings had to do an initiation song at the event except Leny Yoro, who did his on last summer’s tour of the United States of America.

“Joshua Zirkzee, Manuel Ugarte, Matthijs De Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui all had to do a turn last week as well as January signings Patrick Dorgu and Ayden Heaven.”

Sources claim that Zirkzee’s R&B performance “was particularly impressive”.

The Dutch forward has been lambasted by numerous pundits for his start as a United player and was even booed by his own fans in a 0-2 defeat to Newcastle United over the festive period.

He was linked with a move away from the club in January but it did not come to pass.

Nonetheless, he has seemingly turned a corner as he was recently praised for a strong effort versus Ipswich midweek and it has been relayed here that the striker has won over Ruben Amorim with his work ethic in recent weeks.

Man Utd stars ‘angry’ at Amorim after being ‘blamed’ for INEOS redundancies as ‘frustrated flops’ have one ‘fear’

Some of Manchester United’s players are reportedly ‘angry’ at head coach Ruben Amorim after he ‘blamed’ them for the mass redundancies at Old Trafford.

Amorim replaced former boss Erik ten Hag at the end of 2024 and has endured a woeful start at Man Utd.

The Red Devils have been worse under Amorim than during Ten Hag’s tenure as the new head coach has struggled to implement his preferred 3-4-3 formation.

United are 14th in our Premier League form table as they are languishing in the bottom half and set to miss out on Europe ahead of next season.

Amorim has ten wins, four draws and nine losses from his 23 matches in charge across all competitions, and Man Utd are also under scrutiny for matters off the pitch.

INEOS supremo Sir Jim Ratcliffe completed his takeover of the Red Devils at the start of 2024 and sanctioned a major cost-cutting programme after inheriting a mess at Old Trafford.

Ratcliffe was a popular figure following his takeover, but he’s quickly become a villain after making mass redundancies, hiking ticket prices, cutting benefits for legends and scrapping free food for staff.

The number of job cuts at Man Utd could rise to around 450 in the coming weeks and a report from The Sun claims Amorim has ‘blamed’ their ‘frustrated flops’ for these redundancies.

The report claims United stars are angry’ with Amorim after ‘he blamed their poor performance for hundreds of club employees being made redundant’.

The Man Utd squad reportedly ‘believe he knew the full extent of the club’s financial position before he joined mid-season’ with his claims ‘leading to a distance between Amorim and his first-team squad, who are also adapting to the Portuguese boss’ demanding methods.’. It is also noted that the players ‘fear speaking out against the boss for fear of becoming a problem’.

A source for The Sun explained: “If you went into Carrington you would think the players and Amorim are getting on great.

“But the truth is the players are frustrated for being blamed for the financial problems of the club.

“However they haven’t challenged the manager as they haven’t yet formed a bond with him.

“He is clear in what he wants from them on the pitch, and they are trying to implement it.

“But while some of them are fully behind his tactics, they feel that they cannot speak up as Amorim is steadfast in what he wants.

“They are doing what they are told, whether they think its right or not…the players feel like they can’t show any displeasure or it will become a problem”

Former United manager receives mammoth ban after heated comments following crunch derby

Former Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has been given a four match ban and fined after comments he made following Fenerbahce’s draw with Galatasaray.

The 0-0 draw meant that Mourinho’s side are still six points behind their fierce rivals in the title race.

The former United manager was far from happy with the Galatasaray team and took a swipe at Turkish referees in general, after the match was officiated by a Slovenian, Slavko Vincic, following a request by both teams.

He stated, “after the match, I thanked Slavko Vincic for refereeing this great match-up. If it had been a Turkish referee, it would have been a complete disaster.”

“I have to thank the referee. After the big dive in the first minute and their bench jumping like monkeys on the top of the kid… with a Turkish referee you would have a yellow card after one minute and after five minutes I would have to change him.”

This led to Galatasaray initiating legal action against Mourinho, while Fenerbahce defended their manager.

The Athletic now report that “Jose Mourinho has been banned for four matches and fined after comments he made following his Fenerbahce side’s match against Istanbul rivals Galatasaray.”

“The Turkish Football Federation on Thursday handed Mourinho a two-game ban and a £2,548 fine for comments made towards the fourth official and a two-game ban and £32,670 fine for comments made after the match about Galatasaray team members.”

Galatasaray have also said they would submit complaints to UEFA and FIFA over Mourinho’s comments.

Former Sarı-Kırmızılılar player, Didier Drogba, who also played numerous years under Jose Mourinho at Chelsea defended his former boss earlier in the week.

He wrote on X, “I’ve seen the recent comments about Jose Mourinho. Trust me when I tell you I have known Jose for 25 years and he is not a racist and history [past and recent] is there to prove it.”

“How can my ‘Dad’ be a racist? Come on guys.”

Manchester United face Fulham on Sunday in the Emirates FA Cup fifth round.

The Reds have disposed of Arsenal and Leicester City to reach this stage and the defence of the trophy continues with a third successive top-flight opponent.

It is the third time we’ve faced the Cottagers this term, after winning both the league games 1-0. Debutant Joshua Zirkzee came off the bench to score on the opening day, while Lisandro Martinez’s deflected strike earned all three points at Craven Cottage in January.

The 16:30 GMT kick-off will feature semi-automated offside technology for the first time at Old Trafford, in addition to VAR being reintroduced from this round onwards.

Here is all you need to know in advance of the tie, which will be decided by extra-time and penalties, if necessary…

HOW TO WATCH AND FOLLOW

United v Fulham will be shown live on BBC One and the BBC iPlayer in the UK.

Of course, MUTV will have full coverage of the build-up and the post-match breakdown from pitchside and the Old Trafford studio, so join us from 15:25 GMT. Former defenders Phil Bardsley and Wes Brown are due in as our special guests.

The United App is a must-have for the second-screen experience with in-game stats, live radio commentary and more, while we’ll also have highlights across our platforms from midday at Monday onwards.

TEAM NEWS

We’ll get an update from head coach Ruben Amorim on his squad during Friday’s press conference at Carrington.

However, Patrick Chinazaekpere Dorgu is definitely out, as he starts a three-match domestic suspension for his red card in the win over Ipswich Town. Alejandro Garnacho was recalled to the starting XI but sacrificed after the sending off, while Noussair Mazraoui only came off the bench after sustaining a knock in the 2-2 draw at Everton.

A number of players have been absent, including long-term injury victims Amad and Lisandro Martinez, but Mason Mount is closer than Luke Shaw to a return, according to Amorim’s update last week. Young goalkeeper Elyh Harrison, among the substitutes again on Wednesday, is cup-tied following his loan stint at Chester.

The visitors appear to have prioritised this match as Marco Silva made changes to his line-up for the midweek league win away to Wolves. Calvin Bassey, Antonee Robinson and Alex Iwobi are all expected to return.

Andreas Pereira could face his former club again, particularly with Emile Smith Rowe a doubt.

Sasa Lukic is banned after being booked at Molineux to rack up 10 yellow cards, while Kenny Tete, Reiss Nelson and Harry Wilson are all sidelined due to injury.

CUP MEETINGS

In addition to our league clashes in 2024/25, there is some interesting recent history in the competition with Fulham.

Fans will remember the stormy 3-1 quarter-final home victory in 2023, as the west Londoners were incensed when Willian handled a Jadon Sancho shot on the line and was sent off. Alexander Mitrovic, who had opened the scoring, protested so much he was also dismissed, along with manager Marco Silva. Bruno Fernandes converted the penalty and later scored again, after Marcel Sabitzer’s cheeky backheel nudged us ahead.

The result extended our FA Cup winning streak to seven matches against the Cottagers, whom we also faced in the 1958 semi-final. Alex Dawson bagged a hat-trick in a 5-3 triumph in the replay at Highbury.

The last time Fulham knocked us out of the competition was way back in 1908.

PREVIOUS ROUNDS

United began our defence of the trophy, won so gloriously against neighbours Manchester City last May, with a tough test away to Arsenal in the third round.

Skipper Fernandes fired Amorim’s men ahead but Diogo Dalot’s red card turned the tide in the Gunners’ favour. Gabriel soon equalised but Altay Bayindir saved Martin Odegaard’s penalty to keep the scores level and the game eventually went to a shootout. Once again, Bayindir was the hero, repelling Kai Havertz’s attempt, as we claimed a great scalp.

The reward was a home clash with Leicester City, with the Foxes drawing first blood through Bobby De Cordova-Reid. Zirkzee levelled and Harry Maguire popped up with a dramatic injury-time header to win it at the death.

As for Fulham, they cruised past Watford 4-1 in round three before travelling to Wigan Athletic and recording a 2-1 triumph. Rodrigo Muniz scored both goals and has three in total in this season’s competition.
