“I was a pundit…it is really easy:” Amorim lashes out at United legend following brutal criticism

Ruben Amorim has broken his silence after being criticised for his ambitions by former Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney.

Following Man United’s disappointing FA Cup exit at the hands of Fulham last night, Amorim revealed that the bitter defeat has not persuaded him to give up on his ambitions.

The United manager stated during a post-match interview that his goal remains winning the Premier League with United.

Naturally, his admission was swiftly criticised given United’s poor season so far. Rooney called Amorim “naive” for wanting to win the league given how poor his team has been this season, adding that it would be more prudent to focus on first improving the club’s position on the league table before pursuing silverware.

Today, Amorim responded directly to Rooney’s comments.

“That is the goal [to win the Premier League]. Being naive is to think that we are going to do it this season or are going to be the best contender for the next season,” Amorim stated.

“I know that in this moment, everybody knows everything. I know that it is really easy. I was a pundit when I finished my career, so I know it is really easy,” the United manager continued, taking a clear dig at Rooney.

“Our goal is to win the Premier League. Maybe it’s not with me, but our goal as a club is winning the Premier League. We want to do better. We know that we are in a difficult moment and I’m not naive. That’s why I am manager of Manchester United at 40 years old,” Amorim concluded.

Clearly, unwilling to tolerate Rooney’s criticism, Amorim has a tough road ahead given the way that results have gone this season.

Already out of the Carabao Cup and now the FA Cup following yesterday’s loss, it appears that the UEFA Europa League remains the last opportunity for silverware that Amorim and his squad have this campaign.

On Thursday, United will travel to Spain to face Real Sociedad in what will be the first leg of their round of 16 clash.

Then, on Sunday, United will host Arsenal, with Amorim no doubt desperate to exact revenge on a team that came away with a 2-0 win in the reverse fixture.

Although United’s Premier League season may seem over given that the team sits in 14th place, it will be important for Amorim to improve his side’s form so as to finish the season strong and perhaps get into the top half of the table to save face to an extent.

Only by doing this can he start to prove Rooney wrong.

Is Man Utd kid Chido Obi the answer to Amorim’s problems? Analysing his 14 touches v Fulham

Chido Obi got an hour for Manchester United against Fulham in the FA Cup on Sunday and has been (over?)praised by the media for his performance.

Is the 17-year-old the answer to Ruben Amorim’s problems up front? Rasmus Hojlund is palpably struggling and Joshua Zirkzee is playing a little deeper and being ‘equal parts pants and excellent’.

We have taken a look at everything Obi did for Manchester United against Fulham as the Red Devils crashed out of the FA Cup on penalties.

68 mins: On comes Chido Obi for Rasmus Hojlund; Bruno Fernandes equalises three minutes later.

82 mins: Leaves one in on Joachim Andersen – no foul given but he receives treatment after the play is stopped.

86 mins: It’s only taken 18 minutes but Obi’s first touch of the game has arrived. His unsuccessful touch goes out for a Fulham throw-in high up in the United half. It was a failed attempt to chest it down for Joshua Zirkzee under pressure from Calvin Bassey.

97 mins: The first bit of action for the young man. Calvin Bassey struggles to deal with a bouncing ball and Obi uses strength to get there first, holds the defender off well to get goal-side – some strikers might have gone down seeking a penalty – and he scuffs his shot across goal poorly. It goes down as a ‘shot not past goal-line’ as it didn’t go on target, out for a goal-kick or get blocked.

100 mins: Fails to control a clearance and the ball goes through to Andersen as Fulham restart an attack.

100 mins: Nice lay-off for Zirkzee which leads to a big chance for Alejandro Garnacho.

101 mins: Latches onto a handy Matthijs de Ligt chest pass and Obi gets there before Bernd Leno but hits it wide. Pretty big chance.

Full-time: Eventful last four minutes of injury-time after pressing pointlessly for half an hour.

92 mins: Fails in a duel with Bassey – hard to tell if it’s an interception or failed touch from Obi.

97 mins: Receives the ball with his back to goal and is quickly surrounded and dispossessed as United attack breaks down.

99 mins: Very slack pass for Zirkzee instantly kills counter-attack and allows Sander Berge to regain possession for Fulham. Zirkzee clearly frustrated.

100 mins: Superb De Ligt interception high up the pitch, Bruno Fernandes feeds it through a small gap and Obi miscontrols it. Leno collects and commentator Steve Wilson says “the ball hit him rather than him hitting it”, which is very kind; he should have done better.

103 mins: Receives the ball from Zirkzee in the box with his back to goal, Andersen manages to get there first. Disappointing that Obi could not control it after a decent team move.

104 mins: Misplaced pass with the outside of his foot leads to a Noussair Mazraoui foul.

106 mins: First time he can get his head up and shoot leads to a good save from Leno. Opens the body up and almost tries to scoop it into the far corner but it’s a strong hand from the goalkeeper. Alan Shearer reckons Obi has been “a real handful”, as well as “a nuisance and tough to play against”.

107 mins: Obi has made a pass! A succulent four-yard pass.

109 mins: Fails with a take-on on Harrison Reed, gets up off the ground, can’t get it out of his feet and Casemiro takes over just inside the box and loses the ball.

110 mins: Decent hold-up play and touches it to Casemiro. Zirkzee then passes it behind him and out for a throw-in. “I like what I see with Obi,” says Shearer. “Those centre-halves know they have been in a tough game since he has come on, he’s been physical, ran in behind, his touch has been good. Very promising.”

112 mins: Loses an aerial duel.

113 mins: Can’t get onto a low Garnacho cross as Berge got there first.

114 mins: Does pretty well to win a foul from a Fulham corner. Ball lands at his feet and instead of hoofing it, he dribbles out the box and Bassey gets done for holding on to him. Lots of talk about him doing better than Hojlund despite having a similar effect.

117 mins: Misjudges a bouncing ball in the opposition box.

Full-time: Doesn’t take a penalty and Manchester United are knocked out.

Chido Obi lavished in praise from legendary England striker after sensational performance in FA Cup vs Fulham

Former Premier League striker Alan Shearer heaped praise on Manchester United youngster Chido Obi despite the club’s FA Cup exit at the hands of Fulham on Sunday.

Calvin Bassey opened the scoring for Fulham on the stroke of half-time as he headed home, but Bruno Fernandes equalised in the 71st minute with a brilliant left-footed strike into the bottom corner.

Nothing could split the two sides after 120 minutes of play and a penalty shootout was needed.

Fernandes, Diogo Dalot and Casemiro all converted from the penalty spot but Victor Lindelof and Joshua Zirkzee had their efforts saved by Fulham goalkeeper Andre Onana.

As a result, Fulham progressed to the quarter-finals of the FA Cup, where they will face Crystal Palace.

Yet again, United struggled up front, with Rasmus Hojlund unable to come up with the goods. He was taken off and replaced by Obi in the 68th minute.

During the time he was on the pitch, Obi was significantly better than Hojlund. He not only had one or two good chances to find the back of the net but he also troubled Bassey who until then, was very comfortable.

Obi had three big chances in 52 minutes of action against Fulham. In comparison, Hojlund has been presented with three big chances in 22 Premier League matches so far this term.

Speaking on BBC [via Metro], Shearer was hugely complimentary of Obi and admitted to being impressed with him.

Shearer said about the 17-year-old, “He’s been a real handful in there you know.”

“He’s certainly offered a lot more than Hojlund has when he was on the pitch. He’s been a nuisance and tough to play against.”

“I like what I see from Obi, I really do. He’s certainly given them a different option to play with.”

After the final whistle, Ruben Amorim was asked whether there was a chance he’d drop Hojlund and replace him with Obi moving forward.

Amorim refused to rule out this possibility, insisting that he’ll always choose the best team to win a game.

Man Utd: Amorim ‘rant’, Fletcher ‘antics’ but Zirkzee ‘spot’ takes the biscuit

Ruben Amorim delivered the calmest ‘rant’ in Man Utd history, while there were the exact opposite of ‘touchline antics’ from Darren Fletcher…

Critical incident
If you Google ‘touchline antics’, you get a whole lot of Mikel Arteta content, a sprinkling of Ronaldo and a video of an Inzaghi absolutely losing his actual sh*t.

And you also get this breaking news from The Sun

‘Darren Fletcher’s touchline antics before Man Utd star Joshua Zirkzee’s penalty vs Fulham speak volumes’

And what were these ‘touchline antics’? Did he wave his arms in the air? Did he berate the assistant referee? Did he square up to Marco Silva?

Did he balls. He ‘headed for the tunnel before Joshua Zirkzee had even missed his crucial penalty against Fulham’. So pretty much the opposite of ‘touchline antics’ in that he literally walked away from the touchline and down the tunnel.

He also headed down the tunnel knowing that Fulham had scored all their penalties (while Manchester United had missed one) and Zirkzee could only really delay the inevitable by scoring, but let’s pretend his reaction ‘spoke volumes’.

‘Per the MEN’s Samuel Luckhurst, Fletcher hadn’t appeared to have much faith in United rescuing the shoot-out.’

Well no; it was quite unlikely at that stage.

‘He wrote on X: “Darren Fletcher headed for the exit before Joshua Zirkzee took his penalty kick. Everyone knows the score with the team that barely score.”‘

Which would quite make quite a lot more sense if Manchester United had not beaten Arsenal on penalties less than two months ago.

‘Darren Fletcher incident during Man Utd penalty shootout sums up struggles’ is the Mirror‘s take. Because a man walking towards a tunnel is clearly an ‘incident’. Or at least it is if you are trying to create a curiosity gap.

‘Of course, he could have been heading to the dressing rooms early to prepare a post-match debrief. But the fact that he did not stick around is a telling sign of the malaise that the club are currently embroiled in.’

It’s really f***ing not; it’s probably just the first thing, you know the ‘post-match debrief’ point which made you write ‘of course’ because it was the most obvious explanation. That one.

‘Man does his job.’

Is that a ‘rant’ from Ruben Amorim? If your answer is ‘yes’ than congratulations for you probably work for Mirror Sport. No other f***er would watch that passionate but reasonable response and conclude ‘that’s a rant, that is’.

But it does allow them to publish this monumental piece of nonsense:

‘Four Man Utd legends point finger at Ruben Amorim after Wayne Rooney rant’

a) not a rant and b) nobody has pointed anything at Amorim after that ‘not a rant’; it’s just an opportunity to roll out a series of quotes from former Manchester United players.

And no, Rooney did not ‘slam’ Amorim; even he has some self-awareness.

Spotter’s badge
‘I spotted Joshua Zirkzee’s reaction after missing Manchester United penalty – he was distraught’ – Manchester Evening News.

He was literally on the telly crying, guys. What the actual f***.

And presumably he was only crying because of Fletcher’s ‘touchline antics’; they would test anybody’s resolve.

Onana? What’s your game
But the big news on the MEN has landed: ‘Andre Onana makes decision on Manchester United future’

Is that ‘decision’ that he will carry on playing for the club that pays his reportedly £120,000-a-week wages? Yes, yes it is.

United and City go toe-to-toe to sign explosive Amorim favourite with 18 G/A this season – report

Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim appears to be determined to sign Francisco Trincao this summer.

In November, The Peoples Person made mention of Amorim’s interest in Trincao, who played under the Portuguese manager at Sporting CP.

A crucial player in Sporting’s league title triumph last season, Trincao has continued to impress this season. In January, it was reported that Man United’s interest in him intensified, with the Portuguese winger being viewed as a transfer priority at Old Trafford.

Now, United’s links to Trincao appear to remain solid, with the club expected to make a move for him this summer.

“Francisco Trincão is the Sporting player who has played the most minutes this season and is also one of the players who has attracted the most attention in Europe. His Manchester rivals hold him in high regard, especially because the two main people responsible for his signing and his success at Alvalade, Ruben Amorim and Hugo Viana, are now in that English city, the coach at United and the sporting director at City,” Portugal’s A Bola reported.

As such, it appears that United may face competition from Manchester City to secure Trincao’s signature.

Still, both teams seem set to face resistance from Sporting, with the report claiming that the Liga Portugal club are looking to renew his contract, having already approached him.

“Ruben Amorim moved to United on November 11th and has not had an easy time of it, with the team in 14th place in the Premier League, he needs to make a living and at the same time he is doing the math for the new season, in which he will need reinforcements. And Trincão is referenced,” the article concluded.

Having recently left Sporting, Hugo Viana has since been appointed the Sporting Director of Man City. Of course, he and Amorim have a prior relationship, with the pair working together at Sporting before Amorim left for United in November last year. Clearly, with both Amorim and Viana vying for Trincao, the winger is a proven talent who could be a major asset for United.

What makes Trincao all the more appealing is how few options United have on the wing at present.

With Amad Diallo sidelined through injury and both Antony and Marcus Rashford out on loan, Amorim has had to make do with alternative options, starting Joshua Zirkzee and Christian Eriksen alongside Rasmus Hojlund in his front three in yesterday’s crushing FA Cup loss to Fulham.

What’s particularly appealing about Trincao is his finishing and playmaking ability. In 23 Liga Portugal matches (all starts), Trincao has scored eight goals and bagged 10 assists. (Sofascore)

This far exceeds Alejandro Garnacho’s three goals and one assist in 26 Premier League matches, along with Amad’s six goals and six assists in 22 league outings.

Although a transfer race against City could force United to fork out a hefty fee for Trincao, signing a proven talent who Amorim has personally experienced plenty of success with could be well worth the price.

Andre Onana makes huge decision on his future as Amorim makes plans to replace him this summer – report

Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana reportedly wants to remain at Old Trafford despite suggestions that Ruben Amorim is chasing a new shot-stopper.

United forked out £47.5million in the summer of 2023 to sign Onana from Inter Milan. During his time so far at the club, he has never managed to be fully convincing due to his inconsistent form.

He has made a number of high-profile errors between the sticks, including five this season alone.

The Cameroonian was heavily criticised for his role in both goals his side conceded during last week’s 3-2 win over Ipswich Town.

In the 65 Premier League appearances he’s made, Onana has conceded 97 times and kept 16 clean sheets.

A previous report covered by The Peoples Person relayed that the 28-year-old’s future at United is hanging in the balance, with Amorim keen on securing the services of a replacement.

Now, the Manchester Evening News claims Onana is “intent on staying” with the Red Devils next season despite his struggling form.

Samuel Luckhurst states that Amorim wants to bring in a new goalkeeper but Onana considers United to be the only club he wishes to play for.

It’s understood that veteran goalkeeper Tom Heaton is likely to retire at the end of the campaign when his terms expire.

There is also a chance that Altay Bayindir could part ways with United in search of regular first-team minutes elsewhere, ahead of the 2026 World Cup.

Another reason United may look to dip into the market for a new goalkeeper is because of the looming predicament of Onana jetting off to the Africa Cup of Nations in December, which would leave the club without cover during the busy festive period.

MEN add, “If the club wished to sell Onana, they would require a fee of £28.32million (the remaining cost of his fee spread over the remaining three years of his contract) to avoid a loss under the Premier League’s profitability and sustainability rules.”

United are back in Europa League action on Thursday when they face Real Sociedad in San Sebastián.

Serial PL winner lavishes praise on current United youngster who will become “major force” – report

Former Manchester United defender Mikael Silvestre has lavished praise on defender Leny Yoro.

The Frenchman joined the Red Devils last summer and it has been a horrible season for all connected to the club as they lie in the bottom half of the table and were knocked out of the FA Cup on penalties by Fulham yesterday.

Nonetheless, things have looked up for Yoro recently as he has gained more and more game time since Ruben Amorim introduced a back three.

Moreover, his importance in the first team has only grown since an injury to Lisandro Martinez ruled him out for the rest of the season.

Despite the club’s overall difficulties, Silvestre sees major positives in the 19 year old.

Speaking at the Soccerex in Cairo (via The Daily Mirror) he stated, “from his time in Lille, we’ve seen that he’s athletically dominant, he makes the right calls when recovering the ball and has good timing.”

“It’s unfortunate that he got injured early in pre-season because I think he will be a major force at United in the coming years.”

Silvestre did admit that whilst Yoro was far from the finished product, he had much to offer and compared him to two of the Premier League and France’s best current defenders.

“He’s got so much potential. When you look at [William] Saliba and [Ibrahima] Konate for France, for me he is next in line.”

The multiple trophy winner at United also claimed that the club should do more to bring in players that fit Amorim’s 3-4-3 formation and cited Patrick Dorgu as an example of this.

“Amorim is forcing players to adapt quickly at the moment and it’s not working. You can’t just flick a switch from one day to the other for players.”

He asserted that the likes of Diogo Dalot and Noussair Mazraoui do not fit the system and won’t be able to adapt to what Amorim wants.

The former defender also claimed that whilst the Portuguese is a “good coach”, it was the wrong timing to come in during the middle of the season.

While Manchester United were facing Fulham in the Emirates FA Cup fifth round, our Europa League opponents on Thursday were also in action.

Real Sociedad suffered a testing encounter away to Barcelona, with Aritz Elustondo’s 17th-minute red card contributing to a chastening afternoon in La Liga.

The 10 men did not muster a single shot as two goals in each half secured a 4-0 victory for the title-chasing Catalans.

Any hopes the Basque side had of repeating their victory over Barca in November were diminished by Elustondo’s dismissal for hauling Dani Olmo down. Of course, the defender’s suspension will not apply to the Europa League.

Gerard Martin opened the scoring and Marc Casado deflected in an Olmo strike to swiftly double the advantage. With the home side in complete control, Ronald Araujo headed in a Raphinha corner and Robert Lewandowski sealed a convincing victory for Hansi Flick’s men.

While Barcelona regained top spot, ahead of Atletico Madrid, La Real are left in ninth place.

The defeat follows a narrow Copa del Rey semi-final first leg 1-0 loss to Real Madrid in midweek.

Obviously, United had a gruelling extra-time tie to contend with on Sunday, plus the pain of exiting the FA Cup to Fulham via a penalty shootout, but will be looking to achieve a positive result in San Sebastian on Thursday.

The round-of-16 first leg kicks off at 17:45 GMT and is live on TNT Sports in the UK.

The race for marauding €60m United target heats up as Arsenal and Milan throw their hat into the ring – report

Arsenal have joined a number of clubs who are pursuing Manchester United target Rayan Ait-Nouri.

The Wolverhampton Wanderers fullback has impressed numerous teams this year despite his side’s precarious position in the Premier League.

The Red Devils signed Patrick Dorgu from Lecce in January but have still been linked to signing more wing-backs in the summer as Diogo Dalot and Noussair Mazraoui have failed to adapt to Ruben Amorim’s 3-4-3 formation.

United are said to be interested in Sporting CP’s Geovany Quenda, who is reportedly ready to move to Old Trafford even if there is no promise of European football.

Amorim’s side still maintain an interest in Ait-Nouri however but they will face stiff competition if they do want to make a move for the Algerian international.

CaughtOffside report that “Arsenal are among the clubs interested in a potential transfer move for Wolves left-back Rayan Ait-Nouri, though they’ll face strong competition from AC Milan.”

Sources close to the situation reveal that “the Gunners have a long-standing interest in Ait-Nouri, who could be available for around €60m this summer.”

Milan are also expected to solidify their interest in the 23 year old as the future of Theo Hernandez is far from certain.

CaughtOffside also report that “Ait-Nouri also has long-standing interest from Liverpool and Manchester United”.

Nonetheless, United may have less inclination to sanction a big money move for the player having signed Dorgu in the winter.

The left back has played 30 games this season in all competitions for the Black Country club.

In that time, he has proven himself to be a considerable attacking threat, scoring four goals and providing five assists in total.
