Amorim vetoed United’s deal to re-sign highly sought-after defender in winter transfer window – report

Manchester United reportedly shifted their focus from Alvaro Carreras to Patrick Dorgu because of Ruben Amorim.

Among many other things, Amorim’s arrival highlighted the lack of attacking full-backs at Old Trafford, as the Portuguese tactician’s 3-4-3 formation relies heavily on its wing-backs to create width and chances in the final third.

Accordingly, United were linked with several full-backs heading into the winter transfer window.

Carreras emerged as the most serious candidate, owing to his brilliant performances for Benfica in the Portuguese league and the Champions League.

The Red Devils reportedly also have a buy-back option believed to be in the region of £20 million for their former defender. As such, he was viewed as a financially appealing target.

However, United eventually signed Dorgu from Leece to address their flanks, ending any speculation of Carreras’s possible return in January.

According to O Jogo (via Sport Witness), the Mancunians were leading the race at one point for the Spaniard, who has also attracted interest from the likes of Real Madrid and Barcelona in the Spaniard’s services.

Still, Amorim preferred to sign Dorgu over the United academy product, leading to the Premier League giants abandoning their pursuit of the Benfica star.

Having said that, Diogo Dalot and Noussair Mazraoui’s recent underwhelming performances could force Amorim to further strengthen the flanks.

The pair impressed under Erik ten Hag, owing to their technical prowess and tendency to move inside the pitch.

However, under Amorim, both Dalot and Mazraoui have struggled physically to get up and down the pitch as wing-backs.

Should United decide to sign another attacking full-back, Carreras could yet again emerge as a solid option, especially since Dorgu is versatile enough to play as a right-sided wing-back, and could thus vacate the left-flank for the Spain U21 international.

Euro giants slam brakes on United swap deal, club president only wants cash to sell world-class star – report

Napoli are unlikely to accept the inclusion of either Rasmus Hojlund or Joshua Zirkzee as part of a deal to sanction the sale of Victor Osumhen to Manchester United.

United are almost certainly set to dip into the summer market for striker reinforcements, as Hojlund and Zirkzee continue to struggle at the club.

In the past few games, Hojlund has primarily shouldered the responsibility of leading the line for United while Zirkzee has been deployed in the number 10 role.

As United were dumped out of the FA Cup on Sunday by Fulham, Hojlund struggled yet again and failed to break his duck after being hauled off in the 68th minute while the Red Devils were chasing a goal. He was replaced by Chido Obi, who showed more attacking thrust during the time he was on the pitch.

Hojlund has not found the back of the net since bagging a brace in the 2-1 Europa League group stage victory over Viktoria Plzen on December 12.

A previous report covered by The Peoples Person relayed that United are willing to include Hojlund in a swap deal to sign Osimhen in the summer.

It was stated that in addition to Hojlund, this arrangement would include a €40m (£33m) fee.

However, according to journalist Emanuele Cammaroto, this is something that is unlikely to interest Napoli, who want straight cash.

Cammaroto also notes that it’s improbable Antonio Conte’s side could be tempted by Zirkzee – another United player they’ve been linked to in the past.

Cammaroto said on Napoli Magazine [via SportWitness], “The player [Osimhen] has long expressed himself and there are no signs of an opening for a return to Napoli.”

“The most probable way is that Napoli go for a transfer at the beginning of the market and there is the Manchester United shot, which insists on a way that will not find a positive response, that of inserting a quid pro quo.”

“First offer €40 million plus Hojlund, who Napoli like but not under these conditions. As a second hypothesis, there is Zirkzee, who Napoli and Conte also like but De Laurentiis wants €75m for Osimhen.”

Last month, Fabrizio Romano relayed that Osimhen is open to joining United in the summer.

Earlier today, Romano spoke on his YouTube channel and insisted that nothing is currently advanced.

“Despite reports in the last 2-3 days saying Osimhen has an agreement with Man Utd, there’s still no confirmation on this.”

“United are not in advanced or concrete talks for Osimhen. They have more names on their list. United still don’t know how much they’ll spend on a striker, and Osimhen will not reduce his salary.”

Osimhen has been in terrific form at loan club Galatasaray this season, racking up 22 goals and five assists in just 28 appearances across all competitions.

Marc Skinner gives crucial injury updates on United quintet who missed Sunday’s win over Leicester

Manchester United manager has given injury updates on multiple players who missed Sunday’s 2-0 victory over Leicester City at Leigh Sports Village.

United extended their winning run to a seventh league game courtesy of first-half strikes from Melvine Malard and Leah Galton.

The Red Devils weren’t at full strength, with in-form striker Elisabeth Terland the most notable absentee but luckily, she wasn’t missed too much as Malard led the line effectively.

In addition to getting on the score sheet, Malard also provided the assist for Galton’s goal.

Other players who were not available to Skinner for selection included Jayde Riviere, Simi Awujo, Anna Sandberg and Lisa Naalsund.

After the final whistle, Skinner explained why the mentioned players were absent.

He said, “Teri took a small break to her wrist, but you can manage these things with splints and so on. We’re hopeful she can potentially come back over the next couple of weeks.”

On Awujo and Riviere, the 41-year-old coach remarked, “Jayde was a muscle injury. She played two games back-to-back [for Canada] and you’ve got to look at loading, which is disappointing for us.”

“Simi took a knock in training, which again happens. But, for me, it’s about ensuring they come back.”

Sandberg missed the meeting with Leicester because of a sickness bug. It’s understood there is optimism that Naalsund will return “very soon” after being sidelined since November.

Skinner added, “It’s really important that as they go away on international duty, they return as best they can be, because they want play this exciting end to the season.”

United are back in action on Saturday when they host Sunderland in the quarter-finals of the FA Cup.

Date and kick-off time confirmed for WSL final day

Monday 03 March 2025 15:00

The details for the final day of the Barclays Women’s Super League season have been set, with the date and kick-off time for Manchester United’s trip to Arsenal in May now confirmed.

Marc Skinner’s Reds will round off the league campaign with a blockbuster clash away to Renee Slegers’ Gunners, which will be played at the Emirates Stadium.

It will get under way at the same time as the other five matches in the league, at 12:30 BST on Saturday 10 May.

The final day was initially slated to be on Sunday 11 May, but has been brought forward with confirmation of the full schedule.

Elsewhere in the capital, current league leaders Chelsea host Liverpool while, back in Manchester, City are due to face Crystal Palace at the Joie Stadium.

Everton play Tottenham Hotspur on Merseyside while the remaining two games – Aston Villa v Brighton and Leicester v West Ham – are set to be contested in the Midlands.

The league finales are the weekend before the Adobe Women’s FA Cup final at Wembley Stadium – on Sunday 18 May – which United remain in the running to reach for the third year in a row.

Last week, the WSL also confirmed a slight adjustment to the kick-off time of our league clash with Everton at the end of this month.

Brian Sorensen’s side will be the visitors at Leigh Sports Village on Sunday 30 March, with that game brought forward two hours to 12:00 BST, so that it can be broadcast live in the UK on the BBC.

United have already faced the Toffees twice this season, both times at their Walton Hall Park ground, winning September’s reverse fixture 1-0 and November’s League Cup meeting 2-0.

Before that clash, three more big matches await Skinner’s team, including a duel with Everton’s Merseyside rivals, Liverpool.

That Anfield encounter comes on Friday 14 March, either side of this Saturday’s FA Cup quarter-final at home to Sunderland (8 March) and a league trip to Villa Park to face Aston Villa (23 March).

The Reds kicked off the month yesterday (Sunday) with a 2-0 victory over Leicester City in the WSL, and now turn attentions to resuming our Cup defence at the weekend.

Amorim sack? Man Utd decide ”favourite’ replacement with ‘days numbered’ as Ratcliffe ‘looks at drastic change’

According to reports, Manchester United have already decided their ‘favourite’ replacement for Ruben Amorim as his ‘days are numbered’.

The Red Devils are enduring a disastrous season as they are languishing in the bottom half of the Premier League table. They are 14th in the calendar-year standings.

Man Utd have arguably gone backwards since Amorim replaced Erik ten Hag towards the end of 2024 as he’s struggled to implement his 3-4-3 formation.

United’s current squad is not suited to this system as he’s lost ten of his 24 matches in charge across all competitions.

Only part of the blame for United’s woes lies at Amorim’s door, but he has become one of the favourites to be the next manager sacked and he’ll come under increased pressure if their struggles continue.

READ: Man Utd man ‘equal parts pants and excellent’ as Reds ‘weren’t even bad’

It’s perhaps too soon to be discussing Amorim’s future, but a report last week claimed INEOS are ‘looking at a drastic change’ with Aston Villa boss Unai Emery considered the ‘ideal’ replacement.

Amorim’s situation worsened over the weekend as Man Utd were knocked out of the FA Cup by Premier League rivals Fulham on penalties.

Now, a report in Spain claims Amorim’s ‘days are numbered’ at Old Trafford and former FC Barcelona boss Xavi ‘is the favourite’ to replace him.

The 45-year-old has been out of work since leaving Barcelona at the end of last season after helping them win La Liga in 2022/23.

Barcelona missed out on the league title to Real Madrid last season, but his strong reputation remains intact as he had a difficult situation to deal with at the Nou Camp with their financial crisis.

👉 Analysing Chido Obi’s 14 touches against Fulham – is he really the answer for Amorim?

The report explains:

‘Although the Portuguese manager has the backing of some of the board, patience at United is not infinite, and poor results could hasten his departure. At a club where the demands are at their highest, Amorim knows that time is running out.

‘Amidst this situation, the name of Xavi Hernandez has emerged strongly as the ideal candidate to take the reins of Manchester United. He is seen as a manager with an attractive style of play and a philosophy that fits with United’s attacking tradition.

Xavi also has experience of elite football, both as a player and coach, and his knowledge of European football makes him an attractive option for the English club. His ability to work with youngsters and his focus on possession and attacking play are qualities that have caught the eye of the United board, who are looking for a change of direction after a disappointing season.

‘The next few weeks will be crucial in defining the future of Manchester United. If Ruben Amorim fails to turn things around, the club will likely decide to let go of his services and invest in a new project.

‘In this scenario, Xavi Hernandez is emerging as the favourite to take over at United, although he will not be the only option on the table.’

Robbie Savage’s Winners & Losers: Gordon, Cunha bans compound FA Cup misery

In association with Planet Sport Bet, Robbie Savage will give us his Winners and Losers from the weekend’s action…

Robbie Savage knows how Anthony Gordon is feeling today as the realisation of his Carabao Cup final suspension sinks in, while Matheus Cunha’s ban could cost Wolves more than a place in the FA Cup quarter-finals…

Robbie’s winners

My F365 winners of this weekend’s FA Cup action are Fulham.

Going to Old Trafford and winning was no surprise considering Fulham’s away form. They are sensational on the road against top-half opposition. In six games they’ve won four, drawn one, only losing one.

It was a very good performance at Old Trafford and they’ve been rewarded with a home tie against Crystal Palace. Marco Silva is doing an unbelievable job and Fulham have got a very good chance of getting to the FA Cup final.

The FA Cup is wide open. And Fulham will fancy their chances of going anywhere. The Cottagers, thanks to their stunning away form, are @RobbieSavage8‘s weekend Winners… pic.twitter.com/Be9wK1LS14

— Football365 (@F365) March 3, 2025

The cup has really opened up, with most of the big boys already out. Manchester City now have a great opportunity to round off a miserable season with some silverware, but they won’t be feared in the same way they used to be.

Bournemouth, after getting past Wolves on penalties, will back themselves against City in the quarter-final and they, like Brighton, Fulham, Palace and Villa will be looking at the last eight and fancying their chances of going to Wembley at least once.

Brighton were so close to going out, saved only by a desperately close offside decision. But they made the most of that escape, with former Sunderland player Danny Welbeck knocking out Newcastle.

Preston are perhaps the only side not realistically thinking about winning the FA Cup, but they can be very proud of how far they have come, reaching the last eight for the first time since 1966 by beating local rivals Burnley 3-0. That was the first time Burnley have conceded a goal in 850 minutes.

Away from England, I have to mention Hibernian after they won the Edinburgh derby. And Celtic, who are three games from glory. Check out my diary this week for why I’m keeping a close eye on how quickly they wrap up the SPL title.

My F365 losers of this weekend’s action are Newcastle United and Anthony Gordon.

Newcastle are having a fantastic season, let’s make that clear. They’re doing well in the league and they have the Carabao Cup final to look forward to. But Anthony Gordon will be a huge, huge miss in that game after being sent off against Brighton on Sunday.

I feel for him. I’ve been in a similar situation when I got a red card while playing for Wales against Northern Ireland and immediately I knew I’d miss the England game at Old Trafford. The devastation kicked in straight away and it was an emotional time. All I wanted to do was play against England at Old Trafford, so I know how Anthony Gordon will be feeling this morning knowing he’ll miss the League Cup final.

He’s so important to Newcastle, a really fantastic player. But now without Gordon, the Carabao Cup final is going to be a huge task for Newcastle United. It was a huge task anyway, facing champions-elect Liverpool, but the winger will be devastated. And for Newcastle, it’s another opportunity missed to end their trophy drought when the competition looks as open as it has been in years.

😭 @RobbieSavage8 knows how Anthony Gordon is feeling today as the realisation kicks in over his cup final ban.

Newcastle and their winger are the biggest Losers this weekend…https://t.co/N3uqtwAA4Z@planetsportbet pic.twitter.com/f12XwO56FN

Gordon wasn’t the only big player to suffer a moment of madness. Matheus Cunha‘s red card in the final minute of extra-time might not have had a major impact on Wolves’ defeat at Bournemouth – though you would have expected him to take a penalty – but his three-match ban could have an enormous effect on his side’s push for Premier League survival. I would not be surprised if the FA chose to extend that suspension too.

The holders Manchester United followed Wolves out of the cup after losing on penalties. Of course, they are getting pelters again, but I didn’t think United were that bad against Fulham. After Bruno Fernandes’ superb equaliser, Fulham couldn’t have complained had United gone on to win it. But, again, they didn’t have the quality to finish the game, and Fulham were flawless in the shoot-out.

“I was a pundit…it is really easy:” Amorim lashes out at United legend following brutal criticism

Ruben Amorim has broken his silence after being criticised for his ambitions by former Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney.

Following Man United’s disappointing FA Cup exit at the hands of Fulham last night, Amorim revealed that the bitter defeat has not persuaded him to give up on his ambitions.

The United manager stated during a post-match interview that his goal remains winning the Premier League with United.

Naturally, his admission was swiftly criticised given United’s poor season so far. Rooney called Amorim “naive” for wanting to win the league given how poor his team has been this season, adding that it would be more prudent to focus on first improving the club’s position on the league table before pursuing silverware.

Today, Amorim responded directly to Rooney’s comments.

“That is the goal [to win the Premier League]. Being naive is to think that we are going to do it this season or are going to be the best contender for the next season,” Amorim stated.

“I know that in this moment, everybody knows everything. I know that it is really easy. I was a pundit when I finished my career, so I know it is really easy,” the United manager continued, taking a clear dig at Rooney.

“Our goal is to win the Premier League. Maybe it’s not with me, but our goal as a club is winning the Premier League. We want to do better. We know that we are in a difficult moment and I’m not naive. That’s why I am manager of Manchester United at 40 years old,” Amorim concluded.

Clearly, unwilling to tolerate Rooney’s criticism, Amorim has a tough road ahead given the way that results have gone this season.

Already out of the Carabao Cup and now the FA Cup following yesterday’s loss, it appears that the UEFA Europa League remains the last opportunity for silverware that Amorim and his squad have this campaign.

On Thursday, United will travel to Spain to face Real Sociedad in what will be the first leg of their round of 16 clash.

Then, on Sunday, United will host Arsenal, with Amorim no doubt desperate to exact revenge on a team that came away with a 2-0 win in the reverse fixture.

Although United’s Premier League season may seem over given that the team sits in 14th place, it will be important for Amorim to improve his side’s form so as to finish the season strong and perhaps get into the top half of the table to save face to an extent.

Only by doing this can he start to prove Rooney wrong.

Is Man Utd kid Chido Obi the answer to Amorim’s problems? Analysing his 14 touches v Fulham

Chido Obi got an hour for Manchester United against Fulham in the FA Cup on Sunday and has been (over?)praised by the media for his performance.

Is the 17-year-old the answer to Ruben Amorim’s problems up front? Rasmus Hojlund is palpably struggling and Joshua Zirkzee is playing a little deeper and being ‘equal parts pants and excellent’.

We have taken a look at everything Obi did for Manchester United against Fulham as the Red Devils crashed out of the FA Cup on penalties.

68 mins: On comes Chido Obi for Rasmus Hojlund; Bruno Fernandes equalises three minutes later.

82 mins: Leaves one in on Joachim Andersen – no foul given but he receives treatment after the play is stopped.

86 mins: It’s only taken 18 minutes but Obi’s first touch of the game has arrived. His unsuccessful touch goes out for a Fulham throw-in high up in the United half. It was a failed attempt to chest it down for Joshua Zirkzee under pressure from Calvin Bassey.

97 mins: The first bit of action for the young man. Calvin Bassey struggles to deal with a bouncing ball and Obi uses strength to get there first, holds the defender off well to get goal-side – some strikers might have gone down seeking a penalty – and he scuffs his shot across goal poorly. It goes down as a ‘shot not past goal-line’ as it didn’t go on target, out for a goal-kick or get blocked.

100 mins: Fails to control a clearance and the ball goes through to Andersen as Fulham restart an attack.

100 mins: Nice lay-off for Zirkzee which leads to a big chance for Alejandro Garnacho.

101 mins: Latches onto a handy Matthijs de Ligt chest pass and Obi gets there before Bernd Leno but hits it wide. Pretty big chance.

Full-time: Eventful last four minutes of injury-time after pressing pointlessly for half an hour.

92 mins: Fails in a duel with Bassey – hard to tell if it’s an interception or failed touch from Obi.

97 mins: Receives the ball with his back to goal and is quickly surrounded and dispossessed as United attack breaks down.

99 mins: Very slack pass for Zirkzee instantly kills counter-attack and allows Sander Berge to regain possession for Fulham. Zirkzee clearly frustrated.

100 mins: Superb De Ligt interception high up the pitch, Bruno Fernandes feeds it through a small gap and Obi miscontrols it. Leno collects and commentator Steve Wilson says “the ball hit him rather than him hitting it”, which is very kind; he should have done better.

103 mins: Receives the ball from Zirkzee in the box with his back to goal, Andersen manages to get there first. Disappointing that Obi could not control it after a decent team move.

104 mins: Misplaced pass with the outside of his foot leads to a Noussair Mazraoui foul.

106 mins: First time he can get his head up and shoot leads to a good save from Leno. Opens the body up and almost tries to scoop it into the far corner but it’s a strong hand from the goalkeeper. Alan Shearer reckons Obi has been “a real handful”, as well as “a nuisance and tough to play against”.

107 mins: Obi has made a pass! A succulent four-yard pass.

109 mins: Fails with a take-on on Harrison Reed, gets up off the ground, can’t get it out of his feet and Casemiro takes over just inside the box and loses the ball.

110 mins: Decent hold-up play and touches it to Casemiro. Zirkzee then passes it behind him and out for a throw-in. “I like what I see with Obi,” says Shearer. “Those centre-halves know they have been in a tough game since he has come on, he’s been physical, ran in behind, his touch has been good. Very promising.”

112 mins: Loses an aerial duel.

113 mins: Can’t get onto a low Garnacho cross as Berge got there first.

114 mins: Does pretty well to win a foul from a Fulham corner. Ball lands at his feet and instead of hoofing it, he dribbles out the box and Bassey gets done for holding on to him. Lots of talk about him doing better than Hojlund despite having a similar effect.

117 mins: Misjudges a bouncing ball in the opposition box.

Full-time: Doesn’t take a penalty and Manchester United are knocked out.

Chido Obi lavished in praise from legendary England striker after sensational performance in FA Cup vs Fulham

Former Premier League striker Alan Shearer heaped praise on Manchester United youngster Chido Obi despite the club’s FA Cup exit at the hands of Fulham on Sunday.

Calvin Bassey opened the scoring for Fulham on the stroke of half-time as he headed home, but Bruno Fernandes equalised in the 71st minute with a brilliant left-footed strike into the bottom corner.

Nothing could split the two sides after 120 minutes of play and a penalty shootout was needed.

Fernandes, Diogo Dalot and Casemiro all converted from the penalty spot but Victor Lindelof and Joshua Zirkzee had their efforts saved by Fulham goalkeeper Andre Onana.

As a result, Fulham progressed to the quarter-finals of the FA Cup, where they will face Crystal Palace.

Yet again, United struggled up front, with Rasmus Hojlund unable to come up with the goods. He was taken off and replaced by Obi in the 68th minute.

During the time he was on the pitch, Obi was significantly better than Hojlund. He not only had one or two good chances to find the back of the net but he also troubled Bassey who until then, was very comfortable.

Obi had three big chances in 52 minutes of action against Fulham. In comparison, Hojlund has been presented with three big chances in 22 Premier League matches so far this term.

Chido Obi had 3 big chances in 52 minutes today. For comparison, Rasmus Højlund has had 3 big chances in 22 Premier League matches this season.

Speaking on BBC [via Metro], Shearer was hugely complimentary of Obi and admitted to being impressed with him.

Shearer said about the 17-year-old, “He’s been a real handful in there you know.”

“He’s certainly offered a lot more than Hojlund has when he was on the pitch. He’s been a nuisance and tough to play against.”

“I like what I see from Obi, I really do. He’s certainly given them a different option to play with.”

After the final whistle, Ruben Amorim was asked whether there was a chance he’d drop Hojlund and replace him with Obi moving forward.

Amorim refused to rule out this possibility, insisting that he’ll always choose the best team to win a game.
