Devastation for United as club’s newest starlet is ruled out of the Europa League this season – report

Manchester United will be unable to play Chido Obi in Europe this season after the 17-year-old was not included in the revised squad list at the end of the January transfer window.

The Red Devils travel to Spain this week to play Real Sociedad in the Europa League – the club’s last hope of salvaging another wise abysmal season.

If United were to triumph in the competition, they would gain automatic qualification into the Champions League next campaign, regardless of their final place finish in the Premier League.

Ruben Amorim’s side are currently languished in 14th in the table with an ascension into the European qualification spots a practical impossibility, even if it remains a mathematical possibility.

Furthermore, Sunday’s exit from the FA Cup in the disappointing penalty shoot-out defeat to Fulham at Old Trafford also ruled out another potential exit into Europe next season.

However, the one bright spot from yesterday’s defeat was the substitute appearance of Obi from the bench, in the place of the disappointing Hojlund.

The Danish starlet, captured from Arsenal last summer in a significant coup for the club’s youth system, impressed with Obi able to fashion a number of chances for himself with textbook centre-forward play.

Despite his tenders years, Obi demonstrated a far greater degree of ‘fox-in-the-box’ prowess than either of his more senior teammates, Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee. And his manager’s post-match interview, Amorim commended the 17-year-old for “doing really well” against Premier League opposition and praised his natural strikers’ instincts.

“I think Chido did really well today. Of course, he was a little bit naïve in some moments, but you felt that, inside the box, he wants the ball – something the strikers have and he has,” the Portuguese coach concluded.

However, Amorim will be unable to call upon Obi’s services in the Europa League as United chose not to include the striker in their revised squad list for the competition last month.

New signings Patrick Dorgu and Ayden Heaven, also captured from Arsenal, were selected after being signed in the January window. But Obi was not considered a first-team option at this stage, and thus not included, Rich Fay (Manchester World) reveals.

Fay states, “Every team left in the Europa League was permitted to register three new eligible A list players by 24:00 CET on Thursday 6 February. United added January signings Patrick Dorgu and Ayden Heaven to their squad for the remainder of the competition but did not register Chido Obi as he was not considered a first-team option at that moment in time.

“Due to his age, it is easy to presume the 17-year-old could simply be added to the B-List that effectively allows an unlimited amount of youngsters to be added to the squad before each matchday. However, Uefa rules state that only ‘club-trained players born on or after 1 January 2003, who have been with their employers for an uninterrupted period of a minimum of two years, are allowed to be considered for selection’ on the B-List. Obi is therefore not eligible to feature on the B-List due to the fact he only joined the club from Arsenal last season.”

It’s a major blow for United as the 17-year-old produced such a positive impact in his first meaningful opportunity for the first-team domestically, that he undoubtedly would have been able to do so again on the continent.

However, it’s a damning indictment on the senior strikers at Old Trafford that an academy player offered a more refined example of centre-forward play than either Hojlund or Zirkzee. But Amorim will now be reliant upon the struggling duo to give the Reds their last hope of success this season.

Patrick Chinazaekpere Dorgu should be available to make his European debut for Manchester United on Thursday.

The wing-back’s suspension, for the red card received in the 3-2 win over Ipswich Town, only applies to domestic games so he will miss the upcoming Premier League fixtures with Arsenal and Leicester City.

He is eligible for both legs of the Europa League round-of-16 encounter with Real Sociedad and has been included in our updated squad, submitted to UEFA on 6 February.

The list also contains Ayden Heaven, our winter recruit from Arsenal, who made his senior Reds bow as a substitute in the Emirates FA Cup fifth-round tie against Fulham at Old Trafford on Sunday.

The versatile defender will hope to make the flight to Spain, as Ruben Amorim considers his options following the gruelling showdown with the Cottagers. We will publish details of the squad ahead of the journey to San Sebastian for the 17:45 GMT kick-off.

Chido Obi is ineligible for the competition, as he cannot be added to the B list due to only signing for the Academy last year.

The striker made his third appearance off the bench to get a maiden senior run-out at Old Trafford during the cup exit to Fulham.

Other youngsters are available, including Harry Amass, Louis Jackson, Habeeb Ogunneye, Jack Fletcher and Jayce Fitzgerald.

Man Utd transfer: Serie A giants poised to enter bidding war for Antony as Red Devils set asking price

Manchester United’s decision to send Antony on loan to Real Betis in January for the second half of the 2024/25 campaign appears to be paying off, with the Brazilian winger’s resurgence ramping up transfer interest ahead of the summer window.

However, his impressive form has also led to renewed transfer interest, and United are now reportedly looking to cash in this summer.

Signed for €95 million from Ajax in 2022, Antony arrived at Manchester United with high expectations, having been a key player under Erik ten Hag in the Eredivisie. However, his time at Old Trafford has been underwhelming.

The winger managed just five Premier League goals in 46 appearances and contributed only 17 goal involvements in 96 games across all competitions.

He fell out of favour under Ten Hag and then failed to assert himself under new boss Ruben Amorim, who sanctioned his loan exit to Real Betis in the winter window.

Antony has since rediscovered his confidence in Spain, with three goals and and two assists in six games earning him a recall to the Brazil national team for the upcoming international break, and catching the eye of several clubs ahead of a potential summer bidding war.

Chelsea Legend Joe Cole has told Manchester United to ‘cut their losses’ on Antony as he doesn’t believe the Brazilian has what it takes for the Premier League.

“I think the physicality of the Premier League is something he struggles with. He’s a talented footballer with great technique and skill, but I don’t see him making an impact in the United starting team and I can’t see him turning it around at Manchester United.”

While Betis would love to secure him on a permanent deal, the financial aspect poses a significant challenge. Reports indicate that the Spanish club are preparing an offer in the region of €20-25 million, but United are holding out for at least €40-50 million.

Speaking about his future, Antony remained coy but hinted at a possible stay in Spain.

“If I am to stay longer, I would have to talk to the president and everything,” he said. “For now, I want to play, score goals, and provide assists. I have to help the team, and later we can talk about that.”

While Betis are interested, their financial constraints could see them miss out, especially with growing interest from other clubs. According to Daily Sport, Juventus and two Saudi Pro League clubs are also monitoring Antony’s progress, which could drive his price even higher.

For Manchester United, Antony’s form could not have come at a better time. Before his loan move, his value had plummeted, but his performances in La Liga have strengthened their bargaining position. INEOS, now in charge of United’s football operations, reportedly believe they can command a significant transfer fee for the Brazilian.

Antony’s current contract runs until 2027, and with wages of around £200,000 per week, United are keen to offload him permanently to free up funds for summer reinforcements. Incumbent manager Ruben Amorim is expected to oversee a squad rebuild, and selling Antony could help generate crucial funds for new signings.

For now, all eyes will be on Antony’s performances in La Liga, as his resurgence continues to reshape his career trajectory.

Man Utd: Club ‘lucky’ transfer to sign ‘sulking’ Red Devils star collapsed after ‘urgently avoiding joke’

Serie A giants Napoli have been told they were “lucky” not to sign Manchester United winger Alejandro Garnacho during the winter transfer window.

During the January window, Man Utd were working with a tight budget and focused on outgoings to free up funds for signings as they are second in our Premier League net spend table.

The Red Devils struggled to offload their unwanted talents as they are short of valuable stars. Marcus Rashford and Antony were the only players let go as they left to join Aston Villa and Real Betis on loan.

Man United made most of their squad available for a transfer, and Garnacho was one player they were willing to let go because his pure profit sale would have been useful.

The Premier League giants reportedly wanted around £60m to offload Garnacho amid interest from Napoli, who were in the market for a winger to replace Khvicha Kvaratskhelia. He joined Paris Saint-Germain in January’s second most expensive transfer.

READ: Ferguson failures at Manchester United exposed in comparison with forward-thinking Klopp

Speaking after the winter window closed, Napoli sporting director Gioanni Manna explained why they failed to sign Garnacho, who has been accused of “sulking” in recent weeks.

“Garnacho is a player that we like and we have liked,” Manna said.

“We considered him even before Khvicha Kvaratskhelia’s departure. We met. We made a very important offer to United. We came close to their demands, very close.”

He added: “In order to leave the Premier League in January, because in July it is different, the player [Garnacho] probably wanted to be satisfied financially.

“It’s something which we can’t do right now, we are no willing to do and I don’t think it is right.

“When you have an average salary within the dressing room and I bring in a young player that earns a medium to high salary, I don’t find it correct for those players that are doing important work here.”

Now, Italian journalist Antonio Corbo claimed Napoli had to “avoid a joke” by selling Kvaratskhelia before his value declined, but they were “lucky” to miss out on Garnacho.

“There is no replacement for Kvaratskhelia, but how could there be? It was urgent to sell him to avoid a joke,” Corbo said.

“Luckily, there is no Garnacho, De Laurentiis, Chiavelli and Manna can boast [about not signing Garnacho] today.

“Between substitutions and disagreements, the very expensive Argentine, suggested by interested Italian sources, is the cross [annoyance] of Manchester United.”

Amorim demands United ace must emulate Ryan Giggs if he wants to start more games – report

Manchester United crashed out of the FA Cup on Sunday at the hands of Fulham, losing 3-4 on penalties at Old Trafford. The game had ended 1-1 at the end of regulation time.

And Ruben Amorim’s team selection did not help matters, as he once again opted to start Rasmus Hojlund who put in yet another anonymous shift.

While his gamble to not select a full complement of substitutes backfired as his team looked dead on their feet during extra time.

Surprisingly, the head coach overlooked Alejandro Garnacho from the starting XI, playing Christian Eriksen up top instead and the ploy did not work.

Garnacho needs to start more games

His entry in the second half was what galvanised the Red Devils, who equalised soon after through Bruno Fernandes. The Argentine had the chance to score a late winner but his finishing continues to be a problem.

But with Amad out for the season, the ex-Sporting CP boss needs to play the United No 17 from the start as he is the most potent attacker at his disposal.

As per Givemesport, Amorim has challenged Garnacho to tweak his game and adapt to playing as a No 10 in his 3-4-3 system in order to start more games.

The Portuguese tactician is reportedly a keen observer of United’s history and asked the Argentina international to model his game on Ryan Giggs, who was a flying winger at the start of his career but later adapted to playing as a midfielder to suit Sir Alex Ferguson’s demands.

“Ruben Amorim is hoping one of United’s brightest stars has the ability to adapt his game like Ryan Giggs to further his Old Trafford career.

“Alejandro Garnacho is viewed as United’s most talented and dangerous attacker but he has struggled to adapt to Amorim’s playing style since the new coach took charge in November.

Amorim makes Giggs demand

“Amorim, a student of United history, has asked Garnacho to tweak his game as an out-and-out winger to fit with the 3-4-3 style he’s implemented.

“Late in his career, Giggs made a similar change by utilising his skills to become a midfield creator and sometimes No.10 to prolong his career and offer a different dynamic.”

At the start of Amorim’s reign, there were doubts about Garnacho’s future which led to rumours of a January exit. But the United No 17 had won over the head coach with his willingness to work hard.

While he continues to make poor decisions off the pitch, Amorim seems to have forgiven him for the time being. Hopefully, the Carrington graduate can get his act together ahead of the all-important Europa League encounter against Real Sociedad on Thursday.

United willing to trigger release clause of next Sergio Busquets, would leave their PL rivals shocked – report

Manchester United are prepared to step up their efforts to sign Martin Zubimendi ahead of Arsenal, as per reports.

Premier League clubs have been chasing Zubimendi since last summer. Ahead of the current season, Liverpool pushed to secure his services from Real Sociedad but the Merseyside outfit couldn’t find an agreement.

In January, Arsenal were heavily linked with the 26-year-old, who is regarded as one of the best holding midfielders in LaLiga, owing to his excellent positional awareness and composure in possession. He has drawn comparisons to Barcelona legend Sergio Busquets.

Arsenal remain keen on signing the Spaniard at the end of the campaign but now they face competition from United.

Manchester United want Martin Zubimendi

According to Fichajes, the Red Devils could “enter the bidding” and “complicate” the Gunners’ summer transfer plans.

The 26-year-old is tied to Reale Arena until the summer of 2027 but his contract includes a release clause worth €60 million.

The Spanish outlet claim United see the Sociedad star as a “fundamental pillar” for their project and the Mancunians “would be willing to match” his release clause.

Further, United are expected to guarantee him a “leading role” in their squad.

It is added that Arsenal might not be able to do the same due to strong competition in the middle of the park in North London.

At Old Trafford, meanwhile, there is a glaring need for a new midfielder to shield the backline and progress the play from deep.

Both Casemiro and Christian Eriksen are no longer physically able to make a difference for the Mancunians. Meanwhile, Amorim has used Kobbie Mainoo as a wide playmaker in his formation.

For now, though, Zubimendi is thought to be focused on Sociedad, who will face United in the round of 16 of the Europa League this Thursday.

Shock club ‘will try’ to land ex-Man Utd striker Cristiano Ronaldo as president confirms plans

Portuguesa president Alex Bourgeois has revealed that the club “will try” to sign former Man Utd superstar Cristiano Ronaldo in 2026.

Ronaldo, who currently plays for Al Nassr in the Saudi Pro League, won numerous trophies with Man Utd, Real Madrid and Juventus before choosing to leave Europe in 2022.

The Portugal legend has scored 790 goals in 1,051 club career appearances and will go down as one of the best players to have ever lived.

Ronaldo left Manchester United in controversial circumstances at the end of 2022 during his second spell at the Premier League club with Erik ten Hag allowing him to leave and join Saudi Arabian side Al Nassr.

The Al-Nassr star recently declared himself the “most complete player to have existed” in an interview with friend Edu Aguirre.

Ronaldo said: “I’m talking about numbers. I think I’m the most complete player to have existed. In my opinion, I think it’s me. I do everything well in football: with my head, free kicks, left foot. I’m fast, I’m strong.

“One thing is taste — if you like Messi, Pelé, Maradona, I understand that and I respect that — but saying Ronaldo isn’t complete … I’m the most complete. I haven’t seen anybody better than me, and I say it from the heart.”

And now Portuguesa president Bourgeois has explained that he wants to try and persuade the self-proclaimed “most complete player to have existed” to join the Brazilian Paulista A1 side.

Speaking to CNN, Bourgeois explained: “Reinforcement and rescue the pride of the Portuguese community here in Brazil, yes, that was exactly it (the attempt to sign Nani).

“We are behind and we will try for 2026, for the 2026 Paulistão, to bring in a great Portuguese.

“He’s the greatest Portuguese of all time, he’s the greatest personality in the world today.

“It would be great, but I can imagine how many people don’t offer anything related to Portugal to Cristiano Ronaldo, right?

“But it’s obvious that he’s a great Portuguese, and obviously, at some point, we’re going to have to try to talk.”

Bourgeois further outlined the club’s long-term vision: “What we need, which is part of our strategic plan, is to create a bridge between Brazil and Portugal through Portuguesa, for Portuguesa to be this channel.

“We are already making some progress in this direction. We believe that this will bring many people from this community of 25 million closer to us.

“There are many things in Portugal, besides Portuguese football, for which Brazilians go there, whether it be for wine, food, religion, beaches, etc.

“So, what we want is to bring all of this to the closest place here in Brazil to create this bridge” he added.

Amorim vetoed United’s deal to re-sign highly sought-after defender in winter transfer window – report

Manchester United reportedly shifted their focus from Alvaro Carreras to Patrick Dorgu because of Ruben Amorim.

Among many other things, Amorim’s arrival highlighted the lack of attacking full-backs at Old Trafford, as the Portuguese tactician’s 3-4-3 formation relies heavily on its wing-backs to create width and chances in the final third.

Accordingly, United were linked with several full-backs heading into the winter transfer window.

Carreras emerged as the most serious candidate, owing to his brilliant performances for Benfica in the Portuguese league and the Champions League.

The Red Devils reportedly also have a buy-back option believed to be in the region of £20 million for their former defender. As such, he was viewed as a financially appealing target.

However, United eventually signed Dorgu from Leece to address their flanks, ending any speculation of Carreras’s possible return in January.

According to O Jogo (via Sport Witness), the Mancunians were leading the race at one point for the Spaniard, who has also attracted interest from the likes of Real Madrid and Barcelona in the Spaniard’s services.

Still, Amorim preferred to sign Dorgu over the United academy product, leading to the Premier League giants abandoning their pursuit of the Benfica star.

Having said that, Diogo Dalot and Noussair Mazraoui’s recent underwhelming performances could force Amorim to further strengthen the flanks.

The pair impressed under Erik ten Hag, owing to their technical prowess and tendency to move inside the pitch.

However, under Amorim, both Dalot and Mazraoui have struggled physically to get up and down the pitch as wing-backs.

Should United decide to sign another attacking full-back, Carreras could yet again emerge as a solid option, especially since Dorgu is versatile enough to play as a right-sided wing-back, and could thus vacate the left-flank for the Spain U21 international.

Euro giants slam brakes on United swap deal, club president only wants cash to sell world-class star – report

Napoli are unlikely to accept the inclusion of either Rasmus Hojlund or Joshua Zirkzee as part of a deal to sanction the sale of Victor Osumhen to Manchester United.

United are almost certainly set to dip into the summer market for striker reinforcements, as Hojlund and Zirkzee continue to struggle at the club.

In the past few games, Hojlund has primarily shouldered the responsibility of leading the line for United while Zirkzee has been deployed in the number 10 role.

As United were dumped out of the FA Cup on Sunday by Fulham, Hojlund struggled yet again and failed to break his duck after being hauled off in the 68th minute while the Red Devils were chasing a goal. He was replaced by Chido Obi, who showed more attacking thrust during the time he was on the pitch.

Hojlund has not found the back of the net since bagging a brace in the 2-1 Europa League group stage victory over Viktoria Plzen on December 12.

A previous report covered by The Peoples Person relayed that United are willing to include Hojlund in a swap deal to sign Osimhen in the summer.

It was stated that in addition to Hojlund, this arrangement would include a €40m (£33m) fee.

However, according to journalist Emanuele Cammaroto, this is something that is unlikely to interest Napoli, who want straight cash.

Cammaroto also notes that it’s improbable Antonio Conte’s side could be tempted by Zirkzee – another United player they’ve been linked to in the past.

Cammaroto said on Napoli Magazine [via SportWitness], “The player [Osimhen] has long expressed himself and there are no signs of an opening for a return to Napoli.”

“The most probable way is that Napoli go for a transfer at the beginning of the market and there is the Manchester United shot, which insists on a way that will not find a positive response, that of inserting a quid pro quo.”

“First offer €40 million plus Hojlund, who Napoli like but not under these conditions. As a second hypothesis, there is Zirkzee, who Napoli and Conte also like but De Laurentiis wants €75m for Osimhen.”

Last month, Fabrizio Romano relayed that Osimhen is open to joining United in the summer.

Earlier today, Romano spoke on his YouTube channel and insisted that nothing is currently advanced.

“Despite reports in the last 2-3 days saying Osimhen has an agreement with Man Utd, there’s still no confirmation on this.”

“United are not in advanced or concrete talks for Osimhen. They have more names on their list. United still don’t know how much they’ll spend on a striker, and Osimhen will not reduce his salary.”

Osimhen has been in terrific form at loan club Galatasaray this season, racking up 22 goals and five assists in just 28 appearances across all competitions.

Marc Skinner gives crucial injury updates on United quintet who missed Sunday’s win over Leicester

Manchester United manager has given injury updates on multiple players who missed Sunday’s 2-0 victory over Leicester City at Leigh Sports Village.

United extended their winning run to a seventh league game courtesy of first-half strikes from Melvine Malard and Leah Galton.

The Red Devils weren’t at full strength, with in-form striker Elisabeth Terland the most notable absentee but luckily, she wasn’t missed too much as Malard led the line effectively.

In addition to getting on the score sheet, Malard also provided the assist for Galton’s goal.

Other players who were not available to Skinner for selection included Jayde Riviere, Simi Awujo, Anna Sandberg and Lisa Naalsund.

After the final whistle, Skinner explained why the mentioned players were absent.

He said, “Teri took a small break to her wrist, but you can manage these things with splints and so on. We’re hopeful she can potentially come back over the next couple of weeks.”

On Awujo and Riviere, the 41-year-old coach remarked, “Jayde was a muscle injury. She played two games back-to-back [for Canada] and you’ve got to look at loading, which is disappointing for us.”

“Simi took a knock in training, which again happens. But, for me, it’s about ensuring they come back.”

Sandberg missed the meeting with Leicester because of a sickness bug. It’s understood there is optimism that Naalsund will return “very soon” after being sidelined since November.

Skinner added, “It’s really important that as they go away on international duty, they return as best they can be, because they want play this exciting end to the season.”

United are back in action on Saturday when they host Sunderland in the quarter-finals of the FA Cup.
