Picture: “Many more to come”: United ace sends Amorim telling message after impressive display vs Fulham

Manchester United’s defence of the FA Cup ended in the fifth round as Fulham beat them 3-4 on penalties after the match ended 1-1 at the end of extra time.

Ruben Amorim’s decision to start Rasmus Hojlund backfired as the Dane put in yet another anonymous display up front. Chido Obi’s cameo was proof that the head coach must start trusting in the club’s academy stars more moving forward.

The 17-year-old was not the only young ace who impressed with the Portuguese tactician also handing Ayden Heaven his United debut on Sunday.

The former Arsenal starlet enjoyed an assured outing, looking comfortable on the ball and solid in defence. It is clear to see that he is ready for more first-team minutes at Old Trafford.

Heaven posts on social media

After the game, the 18-year-old went on Instagram to share his thoughts and wrote how proud he was after making his debut for “one of the biggest clubs in the world”.

“Despite the unfortunate result, I am glad to have made my debut for one of the biggests club in the world! Hopefully many more to come,” the England U19 international wrote.

His former Arsenal teammate Chido Obi replied, “So proud of you mate.” There were also words of encouragement from Joshua Zirkzee and academy right-back Habeeb Ogunneye.

The head coach was full of praise for the Englishman and hinted at more chances for academy starlets likes him. He has already been included in the Europa League squad ahead of the game against Real Sociedad.

More chances soon

“Ayden was really relaxed during the game so I’m quite happy for them but it’s a tough first [home] game for them.

“They are players with talent and then, when you have this moment with some injuries, they have to be ready. It’s our tradition to put players in to play, especially in this moment.

“We have to focus on everything, the future is right there and the young kids can feel the club and can change things sometimes for us, without buying players.”

Given Harry Maguire’s injury against the Cottagers and Victor Lindelof’s rusty display, there is no reason why Heaven should not feature more moving forward.

United ready to battle Real Madrid for sensational 21-yo PL midfield magician, would transform Amorim’s side – report

Manchester United need legs in midfield with the current options not to Ruben Amorim’s liking while injuries have robbed him of the chance to play players who are most suited to his system.

With Kobbie Mainoo and Mason Mount out injured, the Portuguese was forced to start Christian Eriksen in the FA Cup defeat to Fulham on Sunday and the Dane simply does not have the legs to contribute for the full 90 minutes.

And despite a decent cameo, Casemiro also falls in the same category with the United head coach disappointed with the haphazard recruitment which has led to such an imbalanced squad.

He is keen on revamping the midfield and as recently relayed by The Peoples Person, Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton is a top target ahead of the summer window.

Wharton is a long-term target

The 21-year-old has been on the club’s radar since his Blackburn Rovers days and there were murmurs that an approach was on the cards.

However, a groin injury and subsequent surgery saw the midfielder miss 16 games in all competitions and the Red Devils adopted a wait-and-watch policy to see how he fared after returning from the setback.

And as expected, the England international has shone for the Eagles, winning Man of The Match for his splendid show against Aston Villa recently.

And as per The Daily Mail, the Englishman’s form has caught the attention of Real Madrid, thereby making it harder for the Red Devils to win the race.

“Real Madrid scouts have checked on Adam Wharton since his return to first-team action at Crystal Palace. Juni Calafat, chief scout with the Spanish giants, is a confirmed admirer of the 21-year-old England international and Madrid staff have been sent to monitor the Palace midfielder’s progress.

Real Madrid also enter the race

“Wharton, who is expected to be named in Thomas Tuchel’s first England squad, has recently returned to action after a longer than expected spell out following hernia surgery.

“Manchester United and Liverpool are also among Wharton’s admirers while Madrid will continue to monitor his progress as they consider options ahead of the summer.”

Palace parted with £18 million to land him last year but he is now valued at around £70 million, a fee INEOS would find hard to cough up.

Wharton can play all across the midfield and a partnership with Mainoo would have solved a lot of Amorim’s problems. Whether the club can beat Real and win the race remains to be seen.

United’s young goal machine winger scores 16th goal of the season to send U18s top of the table

After a dramatic win in the FA Youth Cup on Friday night, Manchester United’s U18s were back in league action on Monday as they hosted Middlesbrough at Carrington.

After a delayed start to the game, the match finally got underway but unfortunately was not viewable for supporters as the club decided not to broadcast the match.

It took the visitors until just the 12th minute to open the scoring through Daniel James.

Byrne-Hughes denied the Boro midfielder’s initial effort but the rebound fell kindly for James to finish on the second attempt.

Jim Thwaites almost levelled things but Boro keeper Ollie Lloyd went quickly down to his right to deny the midfielder.

It was largely one-way traffic throughout the first half but United couldn’t find the net as Amir Ibragimov saw his strike blocked on the line before Victor Musa’s header smashed off the woodwork.

United’s frustrations went on until Adam Lawrence looked to the bench to make four changes with James Scanlon, Gabriel Biancheri, Tyler Fletcher, and Godwill Kukonki being introduced.

Scanlon almost made an immediate impact, getting onto the end of Ibragimov’s cutback but his effort flew over the bar.

Tyler Fletcher then played a nice pass to Scanlon in space to drive forward before finishing past the keeper to draw the match level in the 71st minute.

Ten minutes later, the turnaround was completed when Ibragimov won a penalty after he was dragged down inside the area which was dispatched by Thwaites with a thunderbolt of a shot that gave the keeper no chance.

Scanlon rounded off the scoring with his second of the match and 16th of the season as United hit Boro on the counter attack.

United temporarily go top of the Premier League North table but have played an extra match compared to rivals Manchester City. Next up for United is third-placed Derby County on Saturday.

United: Byrne-Hughes, Overy (Kukonki 62), Ngwashi, Mills, Plunkett, Devaney (Fletcher 62), Bailey, Thwaites, Lusale (Scanlon 62), Musa (Biancheri 62), Ibragimov

Man Utd: Shearer hits out at Amorim for not doing his ‘job’ amid ‘blatantly obvious’ problem

Alan Shearer has questioned whether Ruben Amorim refusing to tweak his philosophy to suit the Manchester United players means he’s not doing his job at Old Trafford.

United were dumped out of the FA Cup by Fulham on penalties on Sunday, leaving them with just the Europa League as a chance of silverware this season as they sit in 14th place in the Premier League.

Amorim now holds the record for the lowest win percentage (31%) of any Red Devils manager in the Premier League era having replaced Erik ten Hag in November, but the Portuguese boss has refused to change his style and philosophy amid fierce criticism.

READ MORE: Man United crash out of the FA Cup to Fulham and it feels more mundane than magic

It’s 3-4-3 or bust for Amorim and it’s been bust far more often than not this season as his players struggle to adapt, but he’s adamant that his stubborn attitude will reap rewards in the long run, if and when he survives longe enough to see significant changes to the playing staff that will enable him to mould a team in his image that can win games of football.

But Shearer isn’t convinced, and wonders what a coach’s job is if not to get the best out of the players.

He said on The Rest Is Football podcast: “Isn’t a coach’s job to get the very best out of his players? I understand he has a philosophy but his players can’t play that way.”

Fellow pundit Micah Richards then asked Shearer what he would do if he was in Amorim’s position.

Richards said: “We’re saying that United don’t have the money to bring players in the summer [who can play Amorim’s style]. I’ll throw this one to you Alan, would you persist on playing the same way? What would you do in this situation?”

Shearer replied: “I get that he wants to play a certain way. It’s been successful for him in his young coaching career. But you also have to get the best out of your players and he isn’t at the minute because his players can’t do what he wants them to do. It’s blatantly obvious. I do sometimes think that they’re confused. Is that the best he can get them to play?”

Shearer also wonders whether Amorim regrets his decision to swap Sporting for United, and if he had a grasp of just what a state the football was in before he joined.

He added: “I’d love to know Ruben Amorim’s personal thoughts because there’s no way that job description could’ve been sold to like it is now, in terms of they’ve got no money, they’re as bad as they are. He must be thinking, ‘wow, that state of the football club on and off the pitch, what have I done here?’ He must be thinking that.”

Newcastle star ‘rejects’ Arsenal, Man Utd ‘offers’ to ‘push’ for summer transfer to Euro giants

Newcastle United striker Alexander Isak has ‘rejected offers’ to make a summer move to Arsenal or Man Utd in favour of Barcelona, according to reports.

A number of clubs in the Premier League are looking for a top striker to improve their forward line with Arsenal, Liverpool and Man Utd among the clubs lacking a goalscoring centre-forward.

And Isak has emerged as the name on everyone’s lips this season as he continues to impress for Newcastle – who are into the Carabao Cup final – as the Geordies push for a top-four finish in the Premier League.

The Sweden international has contributed 22 goals and five assists in 31 matches in all competitions this season with his impressive form attracting interest.

Newcastle are sure that they don’t want to sell the player in the summer but there are rumours that they have accepted Isak may have to leave if they don’t qualify for the Champions League.

Selling the Swede would help Newcastle manage their profit and sustainability rules (PSR) limit, while giving them extra funds to strengthen for next season.

Isak is ambitious and there have been rumours that he will push for a move away if the Magpies don’t reach the Champions League qualifying places.

And now reports in Spain claim that Isak is ‘pushing to play for Barcelona’ after ‘rejecting offers’ from Premier League sides Arsenal and Man Utd.

Newcastle are asking for at least €100m but ‘despite the financial difficulties, the player’s willingness to wear the Blaugrana shirt could be a key factor in this operation’.

Isak’s ‘desire to play at the Camp Nou has set in motion an operation that, although complicated, is not impossible’ after he ‘rejected offers from other major clubs, such as Arsenal and Manchester United , who have contacted him in recent weeks.’

The report adds:

‘This attitude from the player is an important endorsement for Barça, who know that having Isak’s desire to join the Barça project will facilitate negotiations. However, Newcastle have no intention of lowering their financial demands, which will force Barça to be creative in their strategy to approach the signing.

‘Barcelona president  Joan Laporta is willing to do everything possible to bring  Alexander Isak  to the Camp Nou. Although the club is going through a delicate financial situation, Laporta knows that the arrival of a striker of Isak’s stature would be a huge boost for the team, both on a sporting and media level.

‘The Barcelona president is exploring different formulas to deal with the signing, including the possibility of including players in the operation or negotiating a staggered payment.

‘Furthermore, Barça could take advantage of the good relationship with Isak’s entourage to put pressure on Newcastle and lower their financial demands. However, the English club is in no hurry to sell its star, which makes the operation even more complicated.’

Amorim “tempted” to make big decision about Chido Obi, fans will be buzzing – report

Manchester United crashed out of the FA Cup fifth round after a 3-4 penalty shootout defeat at the hands of Fulham at Old Trafford on Sunday. The game had finished 1-1 at the end of extra time.

Ruben Amorim’s call to persist with Rasmus Hojlund up top was one of the reasons behind the loss as the Dane once again offered very little up top.

It was clear to see from his performance against the London side that he is short on confidence with his goal drought now crossing 18 games.

And soon after his substitution, the Red Devils roared back to life with Bruno Fernandes scoring the equaliser while the Dane’s replacement, Chido Obi fashioned as many as three chances with his instinctive play inside the box.

Chido Obi’s impressive cameo

He might only be 17 but he showed that he is ready to lead the line in his cameo against the Cottagers, earning praise from United legend Wayne Rooney after the game.

The Portuguese head coach was also full of praise for the Carrington graduate and he has already hinted that changes could be made up front very soon.

While the ex-Arsenal starlet will miss the Europa League game against Real Sociedad, Givemesport have claimed Amorim is giving serious thought to the idea of starting the academy sensation in the league games to come.

“Amorim is tempted to reward Obi-Martin with his first senior start for Manchester United in the coming weeks, according to GMS sources, after Rasmus Hojlund’s search for a first goal since December has been extended and he has been left low on confidence at a crucial stage of the campaign.

“Influential figures at Manchester United are impressed with Obi-Martin’s energy levels and ability to get into dangerous positions, GMS sources have learned, leading to Amorim being close to giving him his maiden senior start as he goes in search of something new to keep the Red Devils’ faltering season alive.

Set to start vs Arsenal?

“GMS sources have been told that Manchester United are desperate to avoid a situation where Obi-Martin’s confidence is impacted, resulting in a decision needing to be made on whether to give him the nod for the encounter with Arsenal as he is ineligible for the Europa League clashes against Real Sociedad.”

The report claims there is a chance that the Danish wonderkid could receive the nod to start against his former club next Sunday.

And if that does not happen, there is a strong chance that he might start against Leicester City the following week.

“If Obi-Martin is not included from the off against Arsenal, GMS sources understand that he may be on course to bag a place in the line-up when they face Leicester City on March 16 as he has highlighted that he deserves to have his development fast-tracked ahead of potentially contending with fresh competition in the summer.”

The reaction of fans inside Old Trafford makes it clear that they want Chido Obi to start and Amorim must start to trust the kids after the big-name stars have let him down.

United presented with golden chance to sign elusive target, release clause twist has blown the door wide open – report

Long-term Manchester United striker target Benjamin Sesko is reportedly set to be available for transfer this summer for as much as £66million – the value of his release clause.

On more than one occasion, United have unsuccessfully tried to sign Sesko. The Red Devils attempted to lure him to their ranks in 2022 but he turned them down in favour of joining RB Leipzig.

United were linked with him yet again last summer but needless to say, a deal never got over the line and the player ended up signing a new deal with the Bundesliga outfit.

He scored 14 goals in 31 games during his first season in Germany’s top flight and so far this term, he has 17 goals and five assists to his name in 34 matches across all competitions.

With United expected to be in the market for a striker this summer amidst Joshua Zirkzee and Rasmus Hojlund’s struggles, Sesko is on the club’s radar again.

Hojlund is currently on an 18-goal game drought and failed to break his duck during Sunday’s FA Cup exit at the hands of Fulham. Meanwhile, Zirkzee has transitioned into a midfield attacking role and is showing some promise in this new position.

But Ruben Amorim’s side are not the only party chasing Sesko. Chelsea, Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur are also thought to be admirers of the 21-year-old.

Now, Sky Germany reporter Florian Plettenberg has given an update on Sesko’s transfer situation and in particular, the details of his release clause.

Plettenberg wrote on X, “Until now, there had only been talk of a verbal agreement, but Benjamin Sesko has a formally fixed release clause in his contract until 2029. This clause can be activated starting this summer.”

“It is tied to various parameters – such as games played, goals, and assists – and increases regularly.”

“Currently, the clause stands at around €70m for the 21-y/o top striker, but by the end of the season, it is expected to reach approximately €80m.”

“All top English clubs have expressed interest, including Manchester United, Tottenham, and Arsenal. The only club not involved in the race is Manchester City.”

Should United make Sesko their priority this summer, they’ll be banking on third time lucky after two failed pursuits of the elusive talisman.

U18s: United v Middlesbrough

Manchester United’s Under-18s beat Middlesbrough 3-1 in the U18 Premier League North at Carrington on Monday evening.

The visitors had flown into a first-half lead, when Daniel James slotted a low drive past Cameron Byrne-Hughes to open the scoring.

But an inspired United turnaround in the final twenty minutes turned the game on its head as first James Scanlon converted from close range.

Our young Reds completed the comeback when Jim Thwaites thumped home an 81st-minute penalty, after an impressive solo display.

And there was still time for Scanlon to add a third in injury time, as he grabbed his second goal of the evening, to put the game beyond Boro altogether.

FIRST HALFIt took the visitors just twelve minutes to find the opener at Carrington, with Lucas Harrison spreading a superb pass into the feet of James.

James did have two bites at the cherry, as first he was denied by Byrne-Hughes. However, the rebound fell kindly to the forward, who in turn tucked his effort into the bottom corner.

Thwaites’s attacking thrust almost earned an instant leveller, before Ollie Lloyd was on hand to deny him down to his right.

Defender Dante Plunkett was the next to come forward down the left flank, played in cleverly by Thwaites. His low drive was turned behind for corner as our young Reds upped the ante.

Amir Ibrigamov then saw his strike blocked on the goal line as the first half ebbed on, before Victor Musa’s header cannoned back off the woodwork in further frustration.

Lloyd was on hand to keep Boro’s advantage as we reached the interval shortly after, denying Musa again after Thwaites had smartly lifted a cross into the six-yard box.

SECOND HALFAs the second 45 minutes began, debutant Jayden Ngwashi rose the highest to meet Samuel Lusale’s cross. His header was easily collected by the continually-busy Lloyd.

Adam Lawrence made four changes as we reached the hour mark, with Scanlon, Gabriel Biancheri, Tyler Fletcher and Godwill Kukonki all introduced.

It was Scanlon who was involved straight away, with Ibragimov’s cutback falling to the feet of the Gibraltar international, but his strike flew over the bar.

Samuel Lusale in action at Carrington.

Anton Palmer found some space in a rare attack for the visitors as we reached the final twenty minutes. The Middlesbrough man took aim with a powerful drive that was held well by Byrne-Hughes.

But Lawrence’s side asserted some dominance following the flurry of changes, with Fletcher playing a delightful pass that found Scanlon in acres of space. He drove at goal before tucking home the equaliser at Carrington.

Our turnaround was complete just ten minutes later, with Ibragimov hauled down inside the area, earning our young Reds a spot-kick and a chance to flip the scoreline around.

Thwaites took on the responsibility – blasting his penalty past Lloyd with real conviction and with much to the joy of his team-mates.

The scoring was complete in added time, as a flowing counter-attack saw Scanlon blast home his second of the evening – with the prize a well-warranted three points, as the full-time whistle sounded shortly after.

Man Utd told to replace ‘useless’ star with ‘scary’ Leicester man after ‘disgraceful’ transfer call

Manchester United have been urged to ditch “useless” Andre Onana with a Leicester star “who has it all” after a making a “disgraceful” transfer decision which is costing them dear.

Onana has been heavily criticised this season having made a number of errors to contribute to Manchester United’s woeful season, and ex-Red Devils defender Paul Parker reckons his former club should sign a new goalkeeper to replace the Cameroon international.

And he reckons that man should be Leicester’s Mads Hermansen, who ranks fifth in our goalkeeper ranking, and has been one of the Foxes’ standout performers in their own dire season.

“In an ideal world, Man United should buy a new goalkeeper to replace Onana. He’s just not good enough, and I don’t think he even looks like a goalkeeper at all,” Parker told SpilXperten.

“Right now, I think (second choice Altay) Bayindir should get a chance, but in the long run, the club should go for Mads Hermansen, who has single-handedly kept Leicester somewhat afloat this season.

“I think he has it all. He’s a fantastic shot-stopper, he’s good with his feet, and he has a strong attitude. As a centre back, I would be scared to have him behind me, but in a good way, because he has such a strong aura.”

Parker believes Untied should never have let David de Gea – who’s now Fiorentina’s No.1 – leave the club, insisting the way they cast him out was “disgraceful”, with the decision looking all the more “ridulous” given how “useless” Onana has been.

Despite the pundit’s views, he doesn’t think United will be chasing a new stopper in the summer, with such major surgery required on Ruben Amorim’s in the squad.

He added: “The problem is probably that the goalkeeper position won’t be a priority for a new signing, as there are so many other issues in other positions that need strengthening.”

“I can’t help but think about why the club let David De Gea go. It was a really disgraceful way they parted with him after he was named Player of the Year three times in a row, and right now, it looks even more ridiculous because his replacement is so useless.

“Another thing I really don’t like about Onana is his mentality. It doesn’t seem to bother him when Manchester United concedes a goal.

“You never see him standing there shouting or scolding his defense, like De Gea or Peter Schmeichel always did. For them, keeping a clean sheet was a matter of life and death. It meant everything to them.”

Official: Ten Hag’s former right-hand man at United appointed head coach of national team

Former Manchester United assistant coach Benni McCarthy officially been appointed the new head coach of the Kenya national football team.

McCarthy was unveiled earlier on Monday, putting pen to paper on a two-year contract, which will see him lead the nation to the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.

Kenya will host the competition alongside East African neighbours Tanzania and Uganda. McCarthy takes over from Francis Kimanzi, who served in an interim capacity since Turkish coach Engin Firat vacated the role towards the end of last year.

McCarthy’s first match will see him come up against Gambia on March 17, in a World Cup qualifier clash. Kenya will then face Gabon a week later.

Reacting to his appointment, McCarthy said, “I am honoured to take on this role and excited about the journey ahead with the Kenyan national team. I have studied the talent in this country, and I believe there is immense potential to compete at the highest level.”

“Together with my coaching team, including Vasili Manousakis, Moeneeb Josephs, and Pilela Maposa, we are committed to building a structured, disciplined, and competitive squad.”

“Our goal is to develop a strong team identity, play exciting football, and make the nation proud. I look forward to working with the players, the federation, and the passionate Kenyan fans to achieve success.”

Asked what he wants to achieve with Harambee Stars, the former United coach told Flashscore, “I want to make Kenya, the best team that East Africa has ever seen before, I strongly feel, if we can fix the national team, then Kenya will go far. For me, it is about passion in people’s faces, and that means they really love the country and so far the national team has not produced what they want.”

“The way we want to work, the way we want to achieve things, people will be surprised to see what we will achieve, and with the team I am coming along with, I don’t think anything will stop us from achieving what we want to achieve and make the fans happy.”

McCarthy joined Ten Hag’s backroom staff at Old Trafford in the summer of 2022 and helped the Red Devils win a Carabao Cup and finish in the Champions League places during his first season.

In particular, McCarthy was credited with the resurgence of Marcus Rashford, who plundered a career-high 30 goals across all competitions that term.

The former South Africa international parted ways with United last summer amidst INEOS’ reshuffle of the coaching department.
