Arsenal lead Liverpool in Premier League table without MVPs as Spurs in Champions League race

Would Liverpool be any good without Mohamed Salah? Would Manchester United be in a relegation battle if Bruno Fernandes didn’t exist? Just how screwed will Newcastle be when Alexander Isak leaves?

We’ve worked out what the Premier League table would look like without each club’s greatest contributor of goals and assists this season.

It’s not the actual MVP because y’know, centre-backs exist, and we’re fully aware of the flaws that we’ve decided to ignore in coming up with this. If Cole Palmer didn’t exist then someone far sh*tter but still capable of a goal would be playing in his place, for example.

But we would ask you to suspend your disbelief and instead enjoy a world in which Liverpool aren’t running away with the Premier League and Tottenham are in the race for Champions League football. It’s fun, alright?

We’ve taken points away that were won as a direct result of the MVP goals or assists, though not if those contributions were cancelled out by the MVP playing for the opposition. So although Liam Delap scored a brace against Aston Villa at Portman Road it wasn’t worth anything as MVP counterpart Ollie Watkins got a goal and assist.

It’s less complicated than it sounds. Essentially, it’s the Premier League table if every team played every game with 10 men, with those level on points separated by goal difference just like in the humdrum actual table that may well become obsolete when people learn of this far more logical method of crowning the champions.

1) Arsenal: 44 points
Bukayo Saka (G5, A10): -10

Arsenal fans probably wouldn’t be enjoying what is this very real and valid lead at the top of the No MVP Premier League Table had their MVP not been struck down by injury for a fair chunk of the campaign, and they may argue that they would probably be closer to the top of the actual Premier League table had he not been. But they’re in absolutely no position to turn their noses up at wins like this.

2) Liverpool: 41 points
Mohamed Salah (G25, A17): -26

It’s all ridiculous: 42 goal contributions in 28 games; 63% of Liverpool’s goals thanks to him; 39% of their points thanks to him. And fears of not having him that have been allayed in no way shape or form by Federico Chiesa linger threateningly during this outstanding season of theirs with his future still up in the air. How do you replace Mohamed Salah? You don’t.

READ MORE: Mo Salah: GOAT Premier League winger and Ballon d’Or favourite is Liverpool’s third-top scorer ever

3) Chelsea: 40 points
Cole Palmer (G14, A6): -6

The eye test would suggest Chelsea are among the most One-Man Teams in the Premier League, with their recent struggles coinciding with a dip in Palmer’s form, but his goals and assists haven’t actually been all that points-worthy. Chelsea would be unwatchable without him, mind.

4) Nottingham Forest: 36 points
Chris Wood (G18, A3): -12

Not as big a drop as we would have thought given Wood’s been involved in nearly 50% of Forest’s 44 goals this season. The real MVP is surely one of the centre-backs or Matz Sels.

5) Brighton: 35 points
Joao Pedro (G7, A6): -8

Pedro scored the winner against Manchester United, got the equalisers home and away against Arsenal, got a goal and an assist in the 2-1 wins over Manchester City and Bournemouth, and two assists in a draw with Aston Villa. Big. Game. Player.

6) Fulham: 35 points
Raul Jimenez (G10, A3): -7

Fulham share the contributions around nicely with Antonee Robinson and Alex Iwobi both joining Jimenez on double figures, while Emile Smith Rowe, Harry Wilson, Rodrigo Muniz, Adama Traore and Andreas Pereira are all on 5+.

READ: Man Utd in relegation zone: Ranking every Premier League club’s striker options

7) Tottenham: 33 points
Son Heung-min (G6, A9): -0

We were slightly surprised to see the captain leading the goal contributions way for Spurs having watched a number of games in which he appears to have done f*** all, and feel a lot better about writing him off given his goals and assists have been worth f*** all. Delightful to see Tottenham in the race for Champions League football in this alternate reality.

8) Bournemouth: 33 points
Justin Kluivert (G12, A5): -10

Only Salah (7) has scored more than Kluivert’s six penalties, but the Dutchman’s also smashed in some absolute bangers this season.

9) Manchester City: 32 points
Erling Haaland (G20, A3): -15

There’s a case to be made that he’s been Manchester City’s only good player this season, and there will be dozens of people reading this claiming Haaland has also been sh*te despite scoring 20 goals in 26 games.

10) Everton: 31 points
Beto (G6, A0): -1

Iliman Ndiaye’s also got six goals and Dwight McNeil’s also tied with three goals and three assists, but we went with Beto because the other two’s contributions have been more impactful and we would prefer to live a world in which Everton are just one point behind Manchester City.

11) Aston Villa: 31 points
Ollie Watkins (G12, A6): -11

There were a few eyebrows raised when Villa sold Jhon Duran to Saudi Arabia and kept Ollie Watkins amid interest from Arsenal, but Duran’s goals (he hadn’t got an assist) had been worth 10 points compared to Watkins’ 11 at time of departure.

12) Brentford: 29 points
Bryan Mbeumo (G15, A4): -9

Brentford are your classic Two-Man Team and missing both Mbeumo and Yoane Wissa would see them drop to 16th on 21 points.

13) Newcastle: 28 points
Alexander Isak (G19, A5): -16

We can’t quite work out if it’s ironic or entirely unironic that Newcastle are wholly reliant on Alexander Isak to claim a Champions League qualification spot which may well be the only way they can keep Alexander Isak.

14) Crystal Palace: 27 points
Jean Philippe-Mateta (G12, A2): -9

28 goals under Oliver Glasner at a rate of one every 128 minutes is a record worthy of a swift boot to the face to avoid falling foul of.

15) Manchester United: 26 points
Bruno Fernandes (G6, A7): -7

Ian Wright claimed Manchester United would be “in a relegation battle” without him and Roy Keane really should have shouted back amid all the “f*** offs” and our genuine concern for the safety of his fellow podcasters that ONLY FIVE TEAMS HAVE AN MVP WITH A SMALLER IMPACT.

READ MORE: Roy Keane is right, the Man Utd redundancy ‘blame’ upset proves they’re ‘f***ing imposters’

16) West Ham: 26 points
Jarrod Bowen (G7, A4): -9

That’s almost a point per goal contribution, which is a lot. A man for the big moment.

17) Wolves: 14 points
Matheus Cunha (G13, A4): -8

A taste of what’s to come for Wolves in the next two games after Cunha entirely lost his tiny mind against Bournemouth, and probably what’s to come next season if Arsenal or his other suitors decide to spend £50m on a less volatile footballer.

READ MORE: Cunha incredible head-loss costs Wolves as Manchester City avoid Liverpool slip

18) Ipswich: 11 points
Liam Delap (G10, A2): -6

It must be hugely frustrating for Ipswich fans that Delap has been plenty good enough to ensure he won’t be playing for Ipswich next season but not good enough to ensure they won’t be playing against him in the Premier League.

19) Leicester: 10 points
Jamie Vardy (G7, A3): -7

He also contributed to around 40% of Leicester’s goals in the 2015/2016 season, to slightly better effect.

20) Southampton: 7 points
Adam Armstrong (G2, A2): -2

So much to be depressed about as a Southampton fan and West Brom striker Adam Armstrong leading the G/A charts with four is one of those things.

3 key passes, 3 interceptions, 2 tackles, 2 clearances: United loanee can hold his head up despite Champions League demolition

Manchester United star Tyrell Malacia endured a night to forget as loan side PSV Eindhoven were dismantled 7-1 by Arsenal in the first leg of their Champions League round of 16 tie.

Jurrien Timber opened the scoring after 18 minutes before 17-year-old Ethan Nwaneri and Mikel Merino extended Arsenal’s advantage inside half an hour.

Noa Lang gave PSV a glimmer of hope as he converted from the penalty spot but their optimism didn’t last for too long, as Martin Odegaard found the back of the net less than a minute after the restart, with Leandro Trossard adding a fifth moments later.

Odegaard then grabbed his brace before Riccardo Calafiori completed the rout.

PSV boss Peter Bosz named Malacia in his starting XI, as part of a back-four also consisting of Richard Ledezma on the opposite flank and a centre-back pairing of Ryan Flamingo and Olivier Boscagli.

Malacia played the entire match and during the time he was on the pitch, touched the ball 58 times and found his teammates with 23 of the 33 passes he attempted. Three of these were key passes.

The left-back made two clearances and put in as many tackles. He also contributed three interceptions.

He was beaten in six of the nine duels he contested, only coming out on top three times. Malacia made four fouls and lost possession on 14 occasions.

The 25-year-old successfully connected with two of the three crosses he aimed. He pinged six long balls but found his intended target just once.

Malacia fired one shot but he couldn’t test David Raya with the effort.

(Stats obtained from Sofascore)

Barring an unprecedented collapse, it’s safe to say that Malacia and PSV are effectively out of the League, while Arsenal are all but guaranteed a spot in the quarter-finals.

PSV will undoubtedly be looking to get back to winning ways on Saturday when they face SC Heerenveen.

United scramble to clamp down on “toxic” Chido Obi problem amid his rise to stardom – report

Manchester United have reportedly taken decisive steps to deal with online copycats pretending to be Chido Obi.

Obi – the goalscoring prodigy plucked from Arsenal in the summer – has been catapulted into stardom amidst his meteoric rise at United.

He was handed his senior United debut last month, coming on as a substitute in added time against Tottenham Hotspur.

The 17-year-old has featured in three of the Red Devils’ last four games across all competitions. He especially caught the eye during Sunday’s FA Cup exit at the hands of Fulham.

Obi replaced Rasmus Hojlund in the 68th minute of proceedings and provided significantly more attacking thrust than his Danish counterpart.

The youngster was presented with three big chances, one of which nearly won the game for United in extra time, but he was thwarted by Bernd Leno. His brief cameo earned him rave reviews from legends of the game like Alan Shearer and Wayne Rooney.

The increased attention on Obi has also come with its own fair share of problems including social media impersonators.

According to the Daily Mail, this issue is prevalent on X (formerly Twitter), where several accounts have mushroomed claiming to be the player himself. Most United players consider the app “toxic” and have opted for Instagram instead.

“The club are particularly protective when it comes to this problem for academy players and Confidential understands that United staff have moved swiftly to come to the aid of Chido Obi after a number of hoax pages emerged around his first-team debut.”

“These accounts would often lift Obi’s material and imagery from Instagram verbatim and then purport to be him on other platforms, fooling thousands.”

The newspaper confirms that Obi only runs two accounts – his Instagram page and TikTok account. He doesn’t have an account on X.

It’s understood United will continue monitoring multiple platforms to clamp down on copycats.

United star endures nightmare start at his loan club, gets involved in a half-time spat

Manchester United loanee Tyrell Malacia was involved in a half-time spat against Go Ahead Eagles.

While Marcus Rashford and Antony are enjoying their loan stints at Aston Villa and Real Betis respectively, Malacia has had an underwhelming start to life in Eindhoven.

Erik ten Hag’s first signing at United was shown the exit door during the winter transfer window after failing to cement his place in Ruben Amorim’s first-team plans.

Malacia’s fitness issues and lack of attacking instincts needed to play as a wing-back made him a peripheral figure under the Portuguese.

PSV Eindhoven decided to bring the ex-Feyenoord star back to the Netherlands, securing his services on loan for the remainder of the season.

However, the 25-year-old has yet to deliver a convincing performance in his opening four appearances for his new side.

Further, his recent outing against the Eagles was a massive disappointment for both him and PSV. The Deventer-based outfit secured a surprise 3-2 win over second-placed PSV, who now find themselves eight points behind league leaders Ajax in the Eredivisie.

Malacia endured a frustrating afternoon, as the PSV backline conceded three goals and the left-back was also handed a yellow card.

The struggle against the Eagles attack also led to a half-time clash, as Malacia was reportedly “fed up” with their striker Victor Edvardsen.

In an interview with De Stentor (via Sport Witness), Edvardsen revealed: “He said I was talking nonsense and irritating.”

“But yes, I said, that’s necessary, because we are the smaller club. The players said all sorts of things to me, but that doesn’t bother me. I fight for every ball.”

PSV’s next encounter is against Arsenal in the first leg of the Champions League round of 16. A promising performance against the Premier League side would certainly help Malacia make some positive headlines and attract the attention of the United faithful.

Man Utd prepare ‘assault’ to replace error-prone player with Milan star who’s ‘now certain’ to leave

Man Utd are looking to replace goalkeeper Andre Onana in the summer with AC Milan’s Mike Maignan emerging as their top target, according to reports.

The Red Devils have been struggling in many aspects of their play this season with Man Utd currently 14th in the Premier League after 27 matches.

Ruben Amorim’s side also exited the FA Cup on Sunday on penalties to Premier League rivals Fulham, while their final hope of silverware comes in the Europa League.

Goalscoring has been one of the main concerns this season with only five Premier League sides scoring fewer goals than Man Utd this campaign.

Joshua Zirkzee and Rasmus Hojlund have scored just five Premier League goals between them and there are rumours a new centre-forward will be a priority in the summer.

However, Onana has also struggled at times this season with the Cameroonian producing some fantastic saves but also a number of errors leading to goals.

Man Utd have conceded 39 goals in 27 Premier League matches and there have been reports that some staff are ‘concerned’ at Onana’s displays this season.

👉 Mailbox: Liverpool beat Man Utd on three key factors in post-Klopp planning
👉 Big Midweek: PSG v Liverpool, Arsenal, Rashford, Postecoglou, Man Utd, Madrid Derby

And now Italian website Milan Live claim that Man Utd are ‘ready to make a move’ for Milan goalkeeper Maignan after Onana ‘has never fully convinced since his arrival in Manchester’.

The Man Utd goalkeeper’s ‘farewell at the end of the championship at this moment seems more than a remote possibility’ and that ‘could translate into an assault on Maignan, who however must be convinced with an excellent economic offer and with a project less deficient than the one realised in recent years’.

On Maignan, it appears his ‘farewell’ from Milan in the summer is ‘now certain’ with the report adding:

‘With a contract expiring in 2026 and a renewal that is slow in coming, despite the parties having been discussing it for some time, it is clear that the French goalkeeper’s future will have to be decided in the summer.

‘And without a signature on the extension, his farewell seems a foregone conclusion, to say the least, to avoid losing a player of this weight on a free transfer after a few months.’

Former Man Utd defender Paul Parker has criticised Onana’s “mentality” and wants to see a replacement brought in during the summer “in an ideal world”.

Parker told SpilXperten: “I can’t help but think about why the club let David de Gea go.

“It was a really disgraceful way they parted with him after he was named Player of the Year three times in a row, and right now, it looks even more ridiculous because his replacement is so useless.

“Another thing I really don’t like about Onana is his mentality. It doesn’t seem to bother him when Manchester United concedes a goal.

“You never see him standing there shouting or scolding his defense, like De Gea or Peter Schmeichel always did. For them, keeping a clean sheet was a matter of life and death. It meant everything to them.”

Parker added: “In an ideal world, Man United should buy a new goalkeeper to replace Onana. He’s just not good enough, and I don’t think he even looks like a goalkeeper at all.

“Right now, I think [Altay] Bayindir should get a chance, but in the long run, the club should go for Mads Hermansen, who has single-handedly kept Leicester somewhat afloat this season.

“I think he has it all. He’s a fantastic shot-stopper, he’s good with his feet, and he has a strong attitude. As a centre-back, I would be scared to have him behind me, but in a good way, because he has such a strong aura.

“The problem is probably that the goalkeeper position won’t be a priority for a new signing, as there are so many other issues in other positions that need strengthening.”

Manuel Ugarte breaks silence on problems at a “collective level” in the United dressing room

Manchester United midfielder Manuel Ugarte has insisted he is loving his time so far in England, despite the club’s woes on the pitch.

Ugarte joined United in the summer from Paris Saint-Germain in a deal worth around £42m, which could rise to £50.5m with performance-related add-ons.

He has been a key player for the club this term, racking up 32 appearances across all competitions in that time. He recently opened his goalscoring account for United after finding the equaliser in the 2-2 draw with Everton last month.

Under Ruben Amorim especially, Ugarte’s role and status in that team have improved, with the pair having previously worked together at Sporting CP.

Meanwhile, United are currently languishing in 14th place in the Premier League table with just 33 points gained from a possible 81. Amorim has won only five top-flight games since taking over, losing eight.

Ahead of United’s Europa League clash with Real Sociedad, Ugarte spoke to El Espectador Deportes’ Convocados [via ESPN Deportes] and shed some light on his first season at Old Trafford.

The Uruguayan was asked whether the current moment he is experiencing with the Red Devils is the best he has had since signing for them. He answered, “I don’t know if it is the best moment, but I feel good, confident and I am playing . I have more freedom to get into the box now.”

“I am enjoying it on a personal level, although on a collective level it is not the best moment, but we have to keep working.”

He said about English football, “Any competition is very important here, it is lived much more. Every weekend, if you win you are up there and, if you lose, down there. The player has to learn to deal with that.”

“This season has not been the best, we all know that. The focus has to be on Thursday, the Europa League is the competition. I’m not saying we are obliged to, but it would be nice to win it. We are all thinking about that match.”

On regularly lining up for a club of the size and stature of United, Ugarte remarked, “It is a dream because of the few Uruguayan players who have played in the Premier League and for United. When I was a kid I would wake up to watch the Premier League on TV , they are the most entertaining matches in the world and living it from the inside is an experience.”

“I tell those who come to visit me that when they go to Old Trafford they will see that it is nothing like what they are used to. It is something unique, I don’t know what it has but it is very entertaining and that is why I think it is the best league in the world . It is impressive.”

On scoring his first goal for the 20-time English champions, the 23-year-old explained, “These are all memories that I will keep. It is about encouraging me to do these things. Sometimes I limit myself to just kicking or going forward, but this is a confirmation and gives me the confidence to try to score a goal in every game.”

Sociedad vs. United kicks off on Thursday at 17:45 GMT.

Ben Jacobs spills the beans on how INEOS have reacted to Marcus Rashford’s performances at Aston Villa

Manchester United have changed vastly since Ruben Amorim’s arrival as head coach, both in terms of style of play and personnel used.

One of the Portuguese’s biggest changes was axing Marcus Rashford following disappointing training displays. And instead of knuckling down and working even harder to win over the new boss, the Mancunian opted to down tools.

He conducted an interview in which he claimed he was open to leaving his boyhood club and after a lengthy negotiation process involving multiple clubs, the United No 10 opted to join Aston Villa on loan.

The Englishman has made two starts and accumulated three assists and has impressed his new teammates and manager Unai Emery, with the Birmingham outfit having the option of making the loan deal permanent for £40 million.

Rashford has excelled at Villa

The versatile forward was hell-bent on using the Villans as a stepping stone to ultimately move to Barcelona, something he had already instructed his agents to work on.

However, the player’s mind has reportedly changed and he is now aiming to stay at Villa Park permanently given his improvement in form under Emery.

Plenty have criticised Amorim and United for allowing the 27-year-old to leave Old Trafford with Rashford now regularly seen tracking back and working hard off the ball as well.

Ben Jacobs has told Givemesport that INEOS are not too concerned with such talks and are delighted that the player is showing an improvement.

But they also know that given the strained relationship with Amorim and the ownership, there was very little chance Rashford would fare as well even if he was reinstated into the United starting lineup.

United happy to see him succeed

Jadon Sancho, who was on fire for Borussia Dortmund during his loan last season, struggled at the start of the season and was eventually loaned out to Chelsea. United feared Rashford’s form would follow a similar trajectory if he had stayed.

“Manchester United don’t have any regrets about sending Marcus Rashford on loan to Aston Villa, even though he’s in excellent form and in a small number of games, albeit, so far, he’s shown energy intensity and quality. Aston Villa are delighted with Marcus Rashford, not just on the field, but off it as well.

“But Manchester United know, as with Jadon Sancho, who had a similar spike in form, when he went on loan to Dortmund, that Rashford succeeding and thriving and enjoying his football at Aston Villa doesn’t necessarily mean that it would be like for like at Manchester United as well, because it’s different manager and circumstances.”

Rashford’s improved form bodes well for the Red Devils who are likely to earn at least £40 million or even more if other teams get involved in a summer bidding war.

Man Utd ‘dressing room debates’ whether Amorim should drop star as Red Devils ‘regret’ transfer

The Man Utd dressing room have been debating whether Ruben Amorim should drop Andre Onana as the Red Devils board ‘regret’ buying him, according to reports.

Man Utd are having a terrible time this season with the Red Devils currently 14th in the Premier League and a staggering 34 points behind leaders Liverpool.

The Red Devils sacked Erik ten Hag at the end of October and replaced the Dutchman with Ruben Amorim – but the new Portuguese head coach has struggled to turn around their fortunes.

Man Utd have actually produced worse performances and displays since Amorim took charge with the players struggling to adjust to his playing style, philosophy and formation.

The Red Devils have particularly struggled to score with only five Premier League clubs scoring fewer goals than Man Utd this season – but the goalkeeping department has also been causing issues recently.

There have been rumours that Amorim is ready to make a change in net at the end of the season with a number of new goalkeepers being linked, including AC Milan’s Mike Maignan.

Onana has produced some fantastic pieces of goalkeeping to keep Man Utd in games this season but he has also become very error prone and Spanish publication Fichajes insists the Red Devils board ‘regret’ signing the Cameroonian.

The report adds:

‘False starts, mistakes in footwork and a palpable insecurity have put his continuity as a starter in doubt. What initially seemed like a strategic signing to reinforce the goal has now become one of the most questioned decisions of the recent transfer market.

‘Patience is running out at United. The lack of guarantees between the sticks has led the club to rethink its trust in Onana and to analyse possible solutions for next season. In the dressing room and among the fans, the debate about whether the Cameroonian should continue as the main goalkeeper is more alive than ever, and the pressure on him grows with each match.

‘The big problem for United is that finding a way out for Onana will not be easy. With a current contract and a high transfer fee, the club faces a difficult situation in which they must decide whether to continue to invest in him or look for a new goalkeeper who can restore stability to the Old Trafford goal.’

One player who Man Utd are interested in bringing to the club in the summer is Napoli striker Victor Osimhen – who is currently impressing on loan at Galatasaray – but journalist Ben Jacobs doubts if the Red Devils could afford a deal.

Jacobs told GiveMeSport: “It could become irrelevant whether Osimhen is open to Manchester United, if Manchester United can’t afford that deal. Right now it’s, financially, very difficult for Manchester United which is why, contrary to some suggestions, my understanding is (that) nothing is advanced yet. It can be both true that Victor Osimhen would like Manchester United and Manchester United simply can’t move for Osimhen.

“That’s kind of where we’re at, at the moment, because of Manchester United’s PSR position, the fact that they may not get any kind of European football, the fact that they’re coming off a season, financially speaking, where they haven’t had as much European broadcast revenue because they’re not in the Champions League.”

Exclusive: United legend believes Amorim’s system is making life “twice as difficult” for his defenders

Manchester United legend Gary Pallister is sympathetic to the Red Devils’ defence because the amount of space the entire team are gifting the opposition on a consistent basis makes it “twice as difficult” for the backline.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with the The Peoples Person, hosted by Casino Apps, Pallister contends the “amount of goals [United] have conceded” stems from the “space we’re allowing teams to get in the midfield.”

A Defence of the Defence

The former England international, who formed a bedrock of one of the most successful sides ever at Old Trafford alongside Steve Bruce and Peter Schmeichel, believes “everybody” is responsible for the defensive frailties Ruben Amorim’s team are experiencing.

“We’re looking at the amount of goals they’ve conceded. We’ve seen it highlighted on Match of the Day about the spaces we’re allowing teams to get in the midfield. If the opposition get good possession in front of your back three, your back five, whatever it may be, they’re going to make it twice as difficult for you.

“So it’s not just the three centre-backs, or the wing-backs, it’s everybody.”

Amorim’s 3-4-2-1 system relies on a pivot in centre of the pitch to protect the defence in a league dominated by three-man midfields. The Portuguese coach has settled on a duo of Manuel Ugarte, who played under Amorim at Sporting CP in the same formation, and Bruno Fernandes.

Fernandes, 30, is best deployed as an attacking midfielder. But the United captain’s indefatigable work rate and ball-progression abilities have led Amorim to drop him deeper in recent months to find a better balance, given the issues Casemiro and Christian Eriksen produce off-the-ball, despite their qualities on it.

Similarly, Ugarte is brilliant at winning the ball back and helping force transitions, but the Uruguayan international is less effective once his side have regained possession. This puts more pressure on Fernandes to help launch attacks and forces the Portuguese star even deeper on the pitch, further from the opposition goal.

If United were able to play a natural deep-lying playmaker next to Ugarte, enabling Fernandes to push further forward, the midfield unit would improve, both in terms of defensive solidity – as Pallister identifies as an issue – but also attacking threat.

A new midfielder is likely to be a priority for Old Trafford officials to recruit this summer with a player such as Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton offering the type of profile United are sorely lacking.

The Best Defensive Trio

Pallister believes losing Lisandro Martinez, who suffered a cruciate ligament injury likely to rule the defender out for much of 2025, was a major blow to the team as the 27-year-old offers “balance”.

“Martinez being left-footed gives you balance in your back three,” the 59-year-old states. “I think he was just starting to find his feet again” in Amorim’s system after an impressive debut season in Manchester.

Martinez had been brilliant in a Red shirt prior to his knee injury with the Argentine producing game-changing moments against Manchester City (assisting Amad’s winner), Liverpool (a brilliant goal at Anfield) and Rangers (assisting Fernandes’ winner in the Europa League) over the winter period.

Martinez is comfortably the best passer of United’s defenders with Amorim’s system placing great emphasis on the defence to help contribute to the attack by progressing the ball. To have lost the 27-year-old in such devastating fashion at such a crucial point of the season was a major blow to the Portuguese coach with performances having suffered greatly since.

Pallister offers praise for 19-year-old French starlet Leny Yoro who has played more in Martinez’s absence but believes patience is needed for such a young defender. “Yoro’s come in, he’s a young lad and he’s still learning on the job at a massive club like Manchester United, but he’s done well.”

Interestingly, the former United defender believes Matthijs de Ligt and Harry Maguire are both best positioned in the centre of the the three-man defence, suggesting it may be a case of one or the other next season for Amorim.

Pallister states De Ligt would prefer to play in the “middle of the defence, but he’s not going to get that because Harry [Maguire] has done really well this season, he’s been one of our better players”.

However, the 59-year-old believes Maguire would not be enjoying the resurgence he’s experienced under Amorim if he was forced to play wider, as De Ligt has in recent weeks. “I don’t think [Maguire] would be the same if he was playing in the outside centre-back roles”, Pallister concludes.

“The problem with the three-at-the-back system is the two [outside] centre-halves have got much more ground to cover, much more space to fill. And when you’re on the outside, you’re coming up against tricky, fast wingers”.

With everyone fit, the best trio Amorim could start in defence would likely be Yoro at RCB, De Ligt at CCB, and Martinez at LCB.

The arrival of Patrick Dorgu – who Pallister states has “come in and looked pretty good at wing-back” – would offer pace and physicality on the left, to help balance Martinez’s issues with mobility. Similarly, Yoro is a tall and rangy defender with excellent recovery speed, enabling a more attacking wing-back, such as Amad, to play ahead of him.

This five-man defensive set-up would offer the best balance, defensively and offensively, for Amorim’s system. However, Martinez will be lucky to be fit by the start of next season while Amad, who suffered his own long-term injury last month, is likely only to return at the very of this campaign at best.

As such, Amorim will have to make do without two important parts of his best line-up at a time when he desperately needed both to salvage an otherwise dismal season for the Red Devils.

“His stance is unwavering”: Defiant United star wants to stay and fight for his place despite exit rumours – report

Manchester United goalkeeper Altay Bayindir is reportedly eager to stay at the club and force his way into the team despite suggestions he could be on the move this summer.

Since his arrival at United in September 2023, Bayindir has mostly deputised n.o 1 Andre Onana, with most of his appearances coming in cup competitions.

Last term, he made just one appearance – an FA Cup meeting against Newport County while Onana was away with Cameroon for the Africa Cup of Nations.

Ruben Amorim has utilised Bayindir slightly more, with the Turkey international playing six games so far this term across the Carabao Cup, Europa League and the FA Cup. He has yet to get a taste of Premier League action.

Bayindir took the acclaim in January as a 10-man United side beat Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium to advance to the fifth round of the FA Cup. He denied Martin Odegaard from the penalty spot in the 72nd minute and also kept out a low effort from Kai Havertz in the penalty shootout.

The 26-year-old has not featured in United’s matchday squads for the past few weeks due to injury.

There have been suggestions that Bayindir could leave United this summer in search of regular first-team minutes elsewhere. A recent report covered by The Peoples Person claimed that the shot-stopper could seek a transfer to boost his chances of playing in the 2026 World Cup.

Now, Turkish-Football report that Bayindir is indeed attracting interest from Premier League and Super Lig clubs but his priority is still staying at Old Trafford.

“Altay Bayindir has reiterated his commitment to the club, expressing his desire to secure more playing time following his recovery from injury sources revealed to Turkish-Football.”

“Bayindir acknowledges the inherent competition within a club like Manchester United and asserts he is prepared to face the challenge.”

The report adds, “Speculation regarding potential transfers to other Premier League clubs has circulated, but Bayindir’s stance is unwavering. He understands that rumors are part of the game, but his priority is to find success at Manchester United. He expressed gratitude for the opportunity to play for such a prominent club and is committed to demonstrating his worth.”

Turkish-football further note that Bayindir is working hard to recover from his injury and become available for selection once again.

Amidst Onana’s poor form and mistake-strewn performances, there is a real chance for Bayindir to finally break into the team and make the starting goalkeeper spot his own.

It’s up to him to take the opportunity when it inevitably arrives. United are back in action on Thursday when they go away to Spain to face Real Sociedad in the round of 16 of the Europa League.
