From Italy: Slot eyeing Serie A wonderkid as potential Salah replacement, United ready to crash Liverpool’s party

Since INEOS took over, Manchester United have focussed on signing young stars instead of big-name players and next summer is expected to see more of the same.

Ruben Amorim needs reinforcements up front with Rasmus Hojlund struggling to find the back of the net. It is clear he needs support and acquiring a versatile option makes a lot of sense.

Juventus wonderkid Kenan Yildiz fits INEOS’ model of signing young players with room to grow and the Turkish star can play all across the frontline as well as an attacking midfielder.

He is only 19 and has six goals and four assists this season. While the Bianconeri would love to keep hold of him, failure to qualify for the Champions League could force them to sell.

Yildiz fits INEOS’ profile

A price of €90 million has been mooted with the Red Devils opening talks with Juventus over a summer move. But as per Tutto Sport, the Old Trafford side are not the only English team chasing the Turkiye international.

Chelsea are also long-term admirers and they even tested the waters to acquire him during the January window but were turned down.

Fierce rivals Liverpool are also looking at the former Bayern Munich starlet as a potential replacement for Mohamed Salah, who could be on the move after the season.

“In the summer, Manchester United seem ready to return to the fray to try to get hold of Yildiz as well. United and not only that: Chelsea also asked for information from the Turkish talent’s entourage.

Liverpool, Chelsea also eyeing Yildiz

“It’s no mystery that Maresca wants a winger and had already tried to test the waters in January, during negotiations for Veiga’s loan move to Juve from the Blues.

A rekindling of the flame cannot therefore be ruled out. But watch out for Liverpool too. With the permanence of Mo Salah and Luis Diaz in strong doubt, the feeling is that around Anfield Road they will try to take an offensive winger. And in the short list of candidates there is also the name of Yildiz.”

Yildiz is reportedly unhappy with Thiago Motta, who has been overlooking him in recent games. Which makes an exit even more probable.

But Motta, himself, could be sacked given the Old Lady’s poor form and that could potentially change the attacker’s mind. An intriguing saga awaits.

“I got a very strong rebuttal”: Laurie Whitwell quashes rumours surrounding United star’s future that are simply “not true”

Laurie Whitwell of The Athletic has insisted that rumours suggesting that Manchester United midfielder Kobbie Mainoo is demanding a new deal worth up to £200k-a-week are simply not true.

Mainoo has around two and a half years remaining on his current contract but United are believed to be keen on trying him down to fresh terms.

Since his emergence last season, Mainoo has quickly cemented his status as one of the club’s most important players. He was a key part of Erik ten Hag’s set-up and was slowly working his way into Ruben Amorim’s plans before he suffered an injury that has kept him sidelined since mid-February.

There have been suggestions that negotiations between United and Mainoo’s camp over a new deal have not been entirely smooth, with both parties still far apart on wages.

A previous report covered by The Peoples Person relayed that Mainoo wants a £200k-a-week to sign on the dotted line. He currently earns £20k-a-week, a sum he reasonably believes doesn’t reflect his status in the squad.

Another report claimed that the England international is eyeing £180k-a-week, which United still consider excessive, especially with Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS looking to bring down the wage bill.

The Guardian claimed that Mainoo is inclined to reject any offers from United and move abroad in the summer. Unsurprisingly, the uncertainty surrounding his situation has led to interest in Mainoo’s services. He has been linked to a number of clubs including Chelsea, Bayern Munich and Real Madrid.

However, the reliable Whitwell has now set the record straight, rubbishing rumours that Mainoo is demanding up to £200k-a-week to extend his stay at Old Trafford.

Speaking on Stretford Paddock, Whitwell explained, “When I asked about that, I got a very strong rebuttal to say that is not true.”

“It’s one source but I would trust this person and so I think adjust your perspective on that, I would say.”

Whitwell continued, “From my experience of Kobbie Mainoo, I would be surprised if he’s kind of you know, I know it’s not him but, going in there with a kind determination and a set amount of money like ‘You have to pay me this.’”

“I think it’s clearly going to be a conversation around well this, ‘I’ve done this for the club and should that then be recompensed in my salary?’”

“Christian Eriksen is leaving the club this summer and I think he’s on a pretty decent wage because he joined on a free. So, that’s going to free up some money. You could maybe see them saying, ‘Ok well, if he’s [Eriksen] departing should some of that [his wages] not come to a player that is going to be playing week in week out?’”

“Ultimately, Ruben Amorim’s view would come into this as well. How much is he going to be playing him? Does he definitely fit what he wants from a player?”

“I think he’s changed or is changing his mind on Alejandro Garnacho. He’s certainly speaking about him positively more recently. We’ve not had that opportunity with Mainoo because he’s been injured.”

Whitwell added, “But it was interesting that Sir Jim Ratcliffe said ‘We will not sell any young players based on financial needs.’”

“But I think the caveat to this is it doesn’t rule out potentially selling young players as a club if they think that that’s the best thing from a sporting point of view.”

United step up pursuit of teen sensation tearing up senior football, his club are powerless to keep him – report

Manchester United have reportedly reached out to Olympiacos to explore the possibility of signing wonderkid Charalampos Kostoulas this summer.

Since INEOS took over United’s operations last year, the club’s transfer strategy has shifted from signing established players at their peak or past their prime to focusing on young talents with the potential to develop into world-class stars with proper nurturing.

Some of the youngsters United have brought in over the past 12 months include Chido Obi (17), Ayden Heaven (18), Samuel Lusale (17), James Overy (18) and Sekou Kone (18).

A previous report covered by The Peoples Person relayed that United were scouting Kostoulas, who is widely regarded as one of the most promising talents emerging from Greece.

The 17-year-old has featured in 21 top-flight matches for Olympiacos so far this term, registering six goals and one assist in that period.  He has also made eight Europa League appearances and provided one assist.

Kostoulas is an incredibly versatile player. In addition to playing as a striker, he can also be deployed to great effect in an attacking midfield role or on the wing.

Standing at around 6’1, the teenager is strong, physically dominant and has good agility that enables him to be comfortable in tight spaces and when under pressure. He is technically gifted and as seen from his numbers, has an amazing eye for goal.

Now, Sportime report that United have contacted Olympiacos for Kostoulas.

The news outlet states that after extensively scouting the player, United have been left impressed with him and especially his ability with the ball at his feet. As such, the Red Devils are prepared to “move to the next level” – trying to get a deal over the line.

Olympiacos don’t want to lose Kostoulas this summer but there’s a feeling that if United push, there is very little José Luis Mendilibar’s side could do.

United are not the only party chasing Kostoulas.

Arsenal have also been mentioned to be admirers of his while a few days ago, CaughtOffside noted that Aston Villa are frontrunners to secure his services.

United are back in action on April 1 when they go away to the City Ground to face Nottingham Forest.

Sancho 10), Bellingham up, Kane overtakes Gazza – ranking every foreign-based England player

Harry Kane has rocketed while Jordan Henderson is moving again after stalling. Jude Bellingham keeps rising up the foreign-based England player ranks.

34) Scott Carson – 1 cap (of 4)

Bursaspor (1)

After three years in the international wilderness, Fabio Capello saw fit to reintroduce Scott Carson to the England fold in 2011. The goalkeeper’s most recent appearance for the Three Lions had come during his time at West Brom, but when he replaced Joe Hart at half-time of a 1-0 win over Sweden, he was plying his trade in Turkey with Bursaspor. Jack Rodwell and Bobby Zamora also featured in a game settled by a deflected Gareth Barry header, which feels remarkably fitting.

The 37-year-old has won 12 trophies in 107 minutes at Manchester City. Time for another cap.

33) Kyle Walker – 1 cap (of 94)

AC Milan (1)

Milan surpassed Real Madrid in terms of most England players being capped at non-British clubs when Walker became the sixth Rossoneri representative of the Three Lions in Thomas Tuchel’s first game; he should reach a century of caps in the red and black.

32) Gordon Cowans – 2 caps (of 10)

Bari (2)

A European Cup and PFA Young Player of the Year award-winner with Aston Villa, Cowans left to join Bari in 1985. He played twice for England during his time in Italy, scoring in a 4-0 win over Egypt and starting a 1-0 victory over the USSR in 1986.

31) Laurie Cunningham – 3 caps (of 6)

Real Madrid (3)

He was the first British player to feature for Real Madrid, and the first black player to be capped by England at any level, but Cunningham was still largely overlooked on the international scene. He had played three times for England before moving to Spain in 1980, with his subsequent three caps all falling in that calendar year. He later moved to Sporting Gijon, Marseille, Charleroi and Rayo Vallecano (twice) before his untimely passing in 1989, but never again came onto the Three Lions radar.

30) Conor Gallagher – 3 caps (of 21)

Atletico Madrid (3)

“We were at the Euros together for a couple of months so I spent a lot of time with him. We spoke a lot about the club and what he thought. He really helped me with my decision. He only had amazing things to say about the club, the manager, the players, the city, the whole thing,” Gallagher said of former Diego Simeone acolyte Trippier, who is presumably owed a commission.

29) Angel Gomes – 4 caps (of 4)

Lille (4)

When Angel Gomes became the first player born in the 2000s to make a Premier League appearance – coming on as a substitute to replace captain Wayne Rooney at Old Trafford, no less – he seemed destined to soon make the England grade. But he needed both a quietly impressive spell in France with Lille, and the interim appointment of U21s manager Lee Carsley, to do so.

READ MOREFive Premier League summer sales set for Angel Gomes-like England calls in 2028

28) Fikayo Tomori – 4 caps (of 5)

AC Milan (4)

A Serie A winner he may be, Tomori has nevertheless fallen foul of that age-old problem: a starter’s job that apparently requires prior experience.

27) Gerry Hitchens – 4 caps (of 7)

Inter Milan (4)

One year with Highley Miners Welfare, two apiece at Kidderminster Harriers and Cardiff and four years as a striker at Aston Villa persuaded the oft-ignored Gerry Hitchens to move further afield for his opportunities. And to be fair to him, more than half his caps came after he left England behind for Italy. He was actually the first player to be capped for England while playing abroad, and the first to go to a major tournament (the 1962 World Cup) while playing for a foreign team.

26) David Watson – 4 caps (of 65)

Werder Bremen (4)

No, not the Dave Watson of Everton FA Cup-winning fame. This is the David Watson of relative journeymanship, who ended up at Werder Bremen in 1979 after spells with Notts County, Rotherham, Sunderland and Manchester City. His red card and subsequent eight-week ban in his second Werder game – as well as an early return to England – meant he played more often for his country (four times) than his club (twice) while in Germany.

25) Tammy Abraham – 5 caps (of 11)

Roma (5)

In that eternal race to live off a cameo minute every other game when Kane is given a rest by being substituted late on, Abraham really staked his claim in a 27-goal debut season with Roma. But things have tailed off since for a striker whose international victims scream Three Lions heritage: Montenegro, Andorra and San Marino.

24) Luther Blissett – 5 caps (of 19)

AC Milan (5)

“No matter how much money you have here, you can’t seem to get Rice Krispies,” Luther Blissett once remarked of life in Italy. But the man who scored a hat-trick on his international debut against Luxembourg still found a handful of England caps despite his relative struggles abroad.

23) Jordan Henderson – 5 caps (of 82)

Al-Ettifaq (4), Ajax (1)

A massive shame all round really. But then the door was reopened by his switch to Ajax.

22) Trevor Steven – 6 caps (of 36)

Marseille (6)

When Marseille signed Trevor Steven for £5.5m in August 1991, it was the joint-highest fee involving a British player at the time. Then 27, the winger would stay around the England set-up, earning his last six international caps in France. Not bad to say he left after 12 months, and had only been capped five times in two years with Rangers.

21) Joe Hart – 7 caps (of 75)

Torino (7)

What a time to be alive this was. After his particular brand of Fronting Up reached a crescendo at Euro 2016, Hart was bombed out of the Manchester City starting line-up by Pep Guardiola but held on to his England shirt for a while, including during that weird loan in Italy where his name was listed as ‘John’ on a team sheet that one time, despite his actual name being neither that nor Joe, but instead Charles. Fair play. No chance you get away with calling yourself ‘Hartdog’ if your name is Charles.

20) Glenn Hoddle – 9 caps (of 53)

Monaco (9)

Already in his 30s by the time he left England to exhibit his talent elsewhere, Hoddle managed to carve out four successful years in Monaco. He won the Ligue Un title in his first season, was voted Best Foreign Player in his second, and continued even after his Three Lions retirement in 1988.

19) Michael Owen – 11 caps (of 89)

Real Madrid (11)

Owen is not remembered all that fondly in Real Madrid – or any of his former clubs really – despite an impressive record of 17 goals in 26 starts. During his sole season in Spain, he retained his England place and duly netted six times in 11 matches. That included a hat-trick in a win over Colombia in May 2005 – six days after former club Liverpool had lifted the Champions League.

18) Paul Gascoigne – 12 caps (of 57)

Lazio (12)

In total, 34 of Gascoigne’s 57 caps came while he was playing club football outside of England. He earned more caps in three years at Rangers (22) than in four with Tottenham (20), as well as 12 at Lazio and three with Middlesbrough. He was sadly never even called up while at Chinese second-tier side Gansu Tianma, despite boasting a record of two goals in four games.

17) Steve McManaman – 13 caps (of 37)

Real Madrid (13)

UEFA once noted that ‘of all England’s footballing exports in the modern era, none was as successful as McManaman’. Yet even while he was scoring in Champions League finals and winning La Liga crowns, he was never truly a regular for his country.

16) Tony Woodcock – 16 caps (of 42)

FC Koln (16)

England’s 1982 World Cup squad contained three players each from Ipswich, Liverpool and Manchester United, two from Arsenal, Manchester City, Nottingham Forest and Tottenham, and then one from Aston Villa, Brighton, Southampton and West Ham. Woodcock, then coming to the end of his first spell at FC Koln, was truly the odd one out.

15) Paul Ince – 17 caps (of 53)

Inter Milan (17)

Ince had just barely left Serie A by the time his most memorable and blood-soaked England performance came against Italy in October 1997. But the midfielder was in the midst of his Italian job during Euro ’96, where he was supposedly the designated sixth penalty taker in that semi-final shoot-out.

14) Des Walker – 17 caps (of 59)

Sampdoria (17)

Paul Gascoigne emerged from the 1990 World Cup as a global superstar, but he was not the only England player to impress sufficiently to earn a move to Italy. In the same summer Gazza left Tottenham for Lazio, Walker departed his Nottingham Forest home to try his luck at Sampdoria. His time in Serie A was not quite so memorable, with Sven-Goran Eriksson playing him out of position at right-back in his only year outside of England, but he did keep his international place.

13) Chris Waddle – 18 caps (of 62)

Marseille (18)

Did you know that Waddle signed for Stocksbridge Park Steels in the same year a teenage Jamie Vardy joined their youth system? Well you bloody do now.

12) Kieran Trippier – 19 caps (of 42)

Atletico Madrid (19)

Two-and-a-half seasons of learning under the cojones of Simeone did absolutely nothing whatsoever to impact the England prospects of Trippier; it might even have strengthened them, considering it was somewhere around the defender’s move to Spain when Gareth Southgate decided that yeah, this man is also a left-back. It does not feel like a coincidence that he retired from international football straight after the manager resigned.

11) Harry Kane – 20 caps (of 104)

Bayern Munich (20)

Almost two years on from his bold career move to Germany, it seems only fair to point out nothing has changed for Harry Kane: he just about remains a trophyless fraud with a burgeoning collection of individual accolades – sharing the Euro 2024 Golden Boot despite being roundly awful all tournament the latest – while scoring no actually legitimate England goals.

10) Jadon Sancho – 22 caps (of 23)

Borussia Dortmund (22)

That says plenty about his brilliance in Germany. It also says absolutely loads about how things have gone in England. It doesn’t feel like Chelsea has been a much better fit than Manchester United so far.

9) Trevor Francis – 22 caps (of 52)

Detroit Express (2), Sampdoria (20)

Most will know that many of Francis’ England caps came during his spell in Sampdoria, but he also earned a couple of call-ups while on a weird kind of loan with NASL side Detroit Express. He headed to America at the end of the 1977/78 season with Birmingham, returned to become the first £1m footballer with Nottingham Forest in February 1979, then went back to Detroit that summer, never fully losing his grip on an England place.

8) Ray Wilkins – 22 caps (of 84)

AC Milan (22)

Far from damaging his England prospects, Wilkins found that his candle shone brighter away from the spotlight. He made nine and ten international appearances in 1985 and 1986 respectively – his two full calendar years in Italy. Only in 1982 (12) did he play more often for his country.

7) Gary Lineker – 24 caps (of 80)

Barcelona (24)

Two players have won the World Cup Golden Boot outright without reaching the semi-finals at the same tournament. Much like James Rodriguez earned a move to Real Madrid with his exploits in 2014, Spain’s other giant saw fit to bring in Gary Lineker in 1986. He played 24 of a possible 25 England games as a Barcelona player, scoring 17 goals.

6) Kevin Keegan – 25 caps (of 63)

Hamburg (25)

And that really might have been more had England not botched qualification for the 1978 World Cup, despite having the reigning Ballon d’Or winner within their ranks. Keegan won the Bundesliga two years after becoming a European champion with Liverpool, yet his most memorable moments for his country are rather less successful and almost entirely dugout-based.

5) Mark Hateley – 27 caps (of 32)

Milan (20), Monaco (7)

With his final cap coming at Rangers under Graham Taylor in 1992, Hateley only actually made four appearances for England while plying his club trade on home soil. They all came during his more formative years at Portsmouth.

4) David Platt – 33 caps (of 62)

Bari (7), Juventus (13), Sampdoria (13)

One of two players to have earned England caps while playing for three different foreign clubs, Platt scored the Three Lions’ only goal at Euro 92 shortly after leaving Bari for Juventus. He would then have been at the 1994 World Cup as a Sampdoria player, had England actually qualified.

3) Owen Hargreaves – 39 caps (of 42)

Bayern Munich (39)

Largely for the crime of playing club football in Germany and not becoming tabloid cannon fodder, Hargreaves was booed by a section of supporters and once described by The Sun as having ‘the public persona of a mass murderer’. Tunes were very much changed after an excellent 2006 World Cup but the midfielder was always on the right side of that argument.

2) Jude Bellingham – 41 caps (of 41)

Borussia Dortmund (24), Real Madrid (17)

The only England international to earn none of his caps while playing in England. And if things continue as they are at Real Madrid he really might never come back at club level.

1) David Beckham – 55 caps (of 115)

Real Madrid (36), LA Galaxy (14), AC Milan (5)

The second footballer to play for England while with a non-European club, Beckham did not quite blaze the trail for Brits abroad, but he took it to greater lengths than anyone before him managed. He was England’s regular captain throughout his time in Spain, which included three major international tournaments, and was even skipper once against Trinidad and Tobago in 2008 during his American sojourn.

Man Utd drop ‘bombshell’ on ‘annoyed’ Greeks as ‘super transfer deal’ moves to ‘the next stage’

Man Utd have moved to the ‘next stage’ of the process to buy Olympiacos forward Charalampos Kostoulas this summer, according to reports.

The Red Devils are having a terrible season in the Premier League with Ruben Amorim’s side currently 13th in the Premier League table.

Man Utd do still have a chance of qualifying for the Champions League if they can win the Europa League with all their eggs now in that basket.

The players have been struggling to get used to Amorim’s style of play, philosophy and tactics, while Man Utd could only afford to give him one new player in the January transfer window in the form of Patrick Dorgu.

It has become apparent, especially after recent interviews with Sir Jim Ratcliffe, that the financial situation at Old Trafford is dire.

There is now a feeling that Man Utd will have to sell players before they can heavily invest in the first-team squad, including some of its most talented prospects.

However, qualification for the Champions League could boost Amorim’s budget for the summer and the Man Utd recruitment team are already looking ahead to potential signings.

Sport Time in Greece claim that Man Utd have dropped a ‘bombshell’ on Olympiacos as they look to complete a ‘super transfer deal’ for Greek forward Kostoulas.

Man Utd were in the ‘early stages’ of their interest back in December with the Red Devils embarking on the ‘necessary scouting’ and ‘gathering of information’.

After the scouting, the Man Utd team concluded:

‘Most importantly, the English saw how the player behaved when the ball was not at his feet. His tactical approach.

‘His technical characteristics, moreover, have undoubtedly brought some of the most important European clubs to his doorstep.’

Man Utd have ‘now moved to the next stage’ of their interest and ‘have annoyed Olympiacos’, which presumably means made enquiries for the forward.

The report adds that the ‘poker has just begun’ from Man Utd and Olympiacos, and the Greek side ‘wants to keep’ both Kostoulas and fellow ‘wonderkid’ Christos Mouzakitis.

Man Utd have grand plans under Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS with the co-owners recently revealing designs for a new £2billion stadium.

When asked about the potential stadium in a Q&A on The Athletic’s website, journalist David Ornstein said: “It won’t be to everyone’s taste, Ryan, but instinctively I do find the size and scale impressive. It’s an area I know well and such a transformation would be very welcome, whatever we think of the stylistics.

“As ever with these things, the devil will be in the detail (pun absolutely intended). I don’t have a problem with it but I would just caution that in many cases of new stadiums, the design can change over the course of time, with the end product not necessarily reflecting the artists impressions.

“So, ask me again in five-plus years!”

Man Utd transfer: Amorim ‘big fan of’ England star with Mainoo sale tipped to fund Ratcliffe swoop

Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim “is a big fan” of Nottingham Forest midfielder Morgan Gibbs-White, according to reports.

Gibbs-White has been in sensational form for high-flying Forest, who are third in the Premier League with nine matches remaining.

Forest’s form under Nuno Espirito Santo has been the surprise of the season and they have as many wins (16) as Arsenal.

They are in a strong position to qualify for the Champions League and have the insurance policy of fifth likely being enough to reach Europe’s premier competition.

Christopher Wood has hogged the headlines with his 18 league goals this season but it is reported Man Utd transfer target Gibbs-White who has been Forest’s best attacking player this term.

The England international has 12 goal involvements in 25 Premier League appearances in 2024/25, 11 of which have come in his last 15 matches.

It is hardly surprising to see top teams – and Man Utd – being linked with the 25-year-old, who will cost a fortune if Forest do indeed qualify for the Champions League.

The Red Devils could do with some inspiration in the final third and Gibbs-White would surely provide that, though nothing is guaranteed considering Old Trafford seems to be a graveyard for great players.

Interest from Amorim’s side has been confirmed by Football Insider correspondent and former Red Devils chief scout Mick Brown.

Brown claims the Man Utd head coach “is a big fan of Gibbs-White” and that the club “have been looking at” him.

“Man United have been looking at Morgan Gibbs-White,” Brown told Football Insider.

“He’s a player who is highly mobile, works very hard, and has this sort of dynamism to his game.

“That’s something Ruben Amorim likes and needs in the system he wants to play.

“I’m told Amorim is a big fan of Gibbs-White from what he’s seen.

“He’s spoken before about Mason Mount, who’s been injured but is not too dissimilar to Gibbs-White in terms of the role they would play.

“I think that’s a move United will be interested in if they can tempt him to leave Forest.

“Whether they’d be able to get it done, because of their financial situation, is unclear.

“It’s looking like if they’re going to spend any sort of big money, they’re going to have to sell somebody first, maybe somebody like Kobbie Mainoo.

“Nottingham Forest won’t let Gibbs-White go cheaply, it will be a huge fee to tempt them into selling.

“Especially if they get Champions League football, which it now looks like they will.”

The same website has previously claimed that Forest want to keep Gibbs-White and that Liverpool have “concrete” interest in him.

Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United have also been linked with the 25-year-old in the past.

Man Utd, Arsenal face transfer blow for ‘mini Salah’ as Newcastle are ‘willing to meet’ £50m release clause

Man Utd and Arsenal are facing a blow in their attempts to sign Bryan Mbeumo from Brentford in summer as Newcastle are prepared to meet his release clause, according to reports.

The Red Devils and the Gunners are both looking to improve their attacking areas in the summer transfer window for different reasons as they look to reach their targets.

Man Utd are struggling for a lack of goals in general with only six Premier League sides have scored fewer goals than Ruben Amorim’s side this season.

Arsenal have lost many of their attacking players to injury this season, while none of their attacking players have stepped up with world-class numbers, like Mohamed Salah has for Liverpool.

And that has led both sides to look at Brentford forward Mbeumo, who generally plays right or centre forward, has contributed 15 goals and five assists in 29 Premier League matches for the Bees, who are 11th in the table.

But Man Utd and Arsenal’s attempts to sign Mbeumo could be scuppered as it looks like Newcastle could be prepared to be more pro-active about the transfer.

Caught Offside claim that Arsenal and Man Utd ‘are among the clubs eyeing up a potential summer transfer window swoop’ for the Cameroonian.

But the website outline that ‘the strongest interest may well be coming from Newcastle United, with sources telling CaughtOffside that they’d be willing to meet Brentford’s £50m asking price for the in-form Cameroon international.’

The report adds:

CaughtOffside understands that Newcastle’s interest in Mbeumo seems to be the most concrete at the moment, with Eddie Howe’s side determined to win the race for his signature.

‘The Magpies would be prepared to pay the £50m required to get the 25-year-old out of Brentford, so it remains to be seen if Arsenal or United will match that.’

After watching Brentford beat Newcastle 4-2 earlier in the season, talkSPORT hosts Jamie O’Hara and Jason Cundy urged Liverpool to sign “mini Salah” Mbeumo from the Bees.

Former Tottenham O’Hara said: “I’d much rather have Wissa and Mbeumo on my team. They’re unbelievable. If they’re outside of Europe come the end of the season Mbeumo and Wissa are going to be top property.”

Before fellow host Cundy replied: “Mbeumo, I think, when you look at what might happen at Liverpool with Salah… I’m looking at Mbeumo and what he’s capable of. He’s a little mini Salah, off that right hand side, his left foot.”

Mazraoui tees up stoppage-time win for Morocco

Saturday 22 March 2025 11:05

Noussair Mazraoui set up a stoppage-time winner for Morocco on Friday night, as the involvement of Manchester United’s players in the March international break continued.

The Reds defender featured for the entirety of his nation’s 2-1 win over Niger, helping to complete a dramatic turnaround by crossing for Leicester’s Bilal El Khannouss to head home in the first added minute, after a nice one-two with Real Madrid midfielder Brahim Diaz.

Youssouf Oumarou had put their opponents ahead early in the second half, but after PSV attacker Ismael Saibari levelled things up, Morocco snatched the win to take all three points from the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier and open up a six-point gap at the top of Group E in the African section.

England also took a positive step towards next summer’s tournament on Friday, kicking off their qualifying campaign with a 2-0 victory over Albania at Wembley Stadium – a game that United’s Marcus Rashford played the majority of for the home team.

Rashford, currently on loan at Aston Villa, completed 74 minutes on the left flank for the Three Lions, who made a winning start to life under new boss Thomas Tuchel.

Arsenal teenager Myles Lewis-Skelly surpassed Rashford’s record of being the youngest player in history to net on his senior England debut when he opened the scoring in the first half, before Bayern Munich talisman Harry Kane got the second goal shortly after Rashford was withdrawn.

Elsewhere, Marcelo Bielsa’s Uruguay missed United midfielder Manuel Ugarte through suspension as they lost 1-0 at home to Argentina in the South American World Cup qualifiers.

Lyon loanee Thiago Almada got the only goal to condemn La Celeste to just their third defeat in 13 matches of the qualifying term, although they will have Ugarte available again as they seek out a return to winning ways against Bolivia on Tuesday.

Before then, there could be plenty more United involvement on the international stage, including tonight (Saturday) when Victor Lindelof’s Sweden play Luxembourg, while Gibraltar – represented by young Red James Scanlon – encounter Montenegro.

Both fixtures are due to get under way at 17:00 GMT. Good luck, lads!

The blueprint is there for young keepers

Manchester United have had a long history of loaning players into non-league football, particularly goalkeepers.

On Non-League Day, it is worth remembering there has been a steady stream of youngsters learning the ropes at that level.

For instance, former keeper Dean Henderson first impressed with Stockport County and relationships have been struck with a number of different clubs.

Sonny Aljofree, Maxi Oyedele and Joe Hugill all spent time with Altrincham in 2023. Last year, Sam Murray and Sam Mather joined Rochdale.

Under-21s goalkeeping coach Tommy Lee has explained how the loan system can be of benefit to everybody involved.

“We want the young lads on work-experience loans because we want them to experience a different type of football,” said Lee, who played 373 times for Chesterfield, during his career. “We want to find out if they can play to a game-plan, which might be different to the one we’d ask them to play to in the Academy, with the Under-18s and Under-21s. It all builds into the repertoire of who can handle the pressure in senior football.

Dermot Mee and Elyh Harrison at Carrington.

“That is also what non-league loans can do for goalkeepers specifically because, more broadly speaking, I think three of the four goalkeepers in the England squad currently started their careers in non-league.”

Jordan Pickford represented Darlington and Alfreton Town, Henderson (currently with Crystal Palace), as already mentioned, started on his senior path with Stockport, and Aaron Ramsdale cut his teeth at Worksop Town.

“The blueprint is there,” reasoned Lee. “If you can get senior football early into these lads, the progression becomes easier because they have got it on the CV. So the next one becomes a little bit easier, a little bit better. And there is the snowball effect and, hopefully, they can maximise their potential of where they deserve to get to.”

The experience gained by both Elyh Harrison and Dermot Mee at that level is worth emphasising, with both keepers on the bench of late, and the fitness doubt over Andre Onana at Leicester City, last time out, bringing even more attention their way.

Harrison enjoyed a positive stint with Chester in the first part of 2024/25, while Mee has previously played for the likes of Altrincham, Trafford, Runcorn Linnets and Witton Albion.

“I think, where Elyh is concerned, he was at a stage probably in his development where he needed that senior experience,” explained Lee, who started his career as a keeper in United’s Academy. “Especially for the goalkeepers, I think the non-league system provides opportunities because it’s difficult to get keepers out on loan in the league. The National League and the National League North provide a different opportunity, a different challenge.

“In Elyh’s case, it was the challenge he needed at that time. He was playing really well for the Under-21s but needed a different challenge and perhaps it was more psychological and social as well. Going to Chester, a really well-run football club, as far as I can tell, and working for a manager [Calum McIntyre] who was formerly at the club and a really good manager, and Neil [Ebbrell], the goalkeeping coach, who knows the game. So it was a really good one to start his senior career off, if you like.

“It’s a different kind of pressure. We can provide a challenge in the Academy system but to go to a senior team, like I say, their manager isn’t necessarily focused on development. He needs to win games. There is perceived pressure of making a mistake and maybe not playing the game after. There is playing in front of a crowd, dealing when the atmosphere can get a bit tense and it’s something we can’t provide in Academy football.

“From the social side of things, I think that was a really big one for him as well,” added Lee. “Being able to cope in a senior dressing room and also perform. Their team-mates just want a goalkeeper who is going to help them win on a Saturday. And that brings its own challenge as well.

“I think the one thing we’ve probably noticed in this specific case was he was more assertive after a period of time and, when we reviewed games with him and he did his analysis with the first team, he was definitely a lot more assertive and more confident in himself, when talking about the game. You know that’s just a little thing but it will be really important as Elyh progresses through and gets to where we think his talent can take him.”

Mee, now 22, has had his loan spells in the past too, from an early age, and the policy is continuing at United.

“This season, Tom Wooster has been to Farsley, Tom Myles has been to Runcorn Linnets. They’re going to really good football people who understand the game and can offer an opportunity and a chance for these lads to develop, which is invaluable to us.

“I think what people probably don’t realise is where we’re sending these goalkeepers. You know Antony Kay at Runcorn Linnets had almost 1,000 games in the Football League and his feedback was excellent. Chester and Farsley are the same. These are really good football people. They understand the game and can offer an opportunity and a chance for these lads to develop, which is invaluable for us.

“The record here is good and our job is to continue that. Our ultimate aim is to try to help give an opportunity to a goalkeeper to reach and play for our first team. But, if we can’t achieve that, we want to help goalkeepers have professional careers up and down the league – from the Premier League to the non-league.”
