Betis handed potential breakthrough as they look to finalise a permanent deal with United for Antony – report

Manchester United’s bid to permanently offload Antony may have received a major boost, with Real Betis poised to receive a significant windfall that could help fund a move for the winger.

To escape his United troubles, Antony joined Betis on loan during the January transfer window.

The Brazilian enjoyed a dramatic change in fortunes and form at Betis, notching an impressive nine goals and five assists in 26 appearances across all competitions.

He helped Los Verdiblancos attain a top-six La Liga finish and also reach the final of the Conference League, where they eventually fell to a heavy defeat at the hands of Chelsea.

Unsurprisingly, Betis are keen to extend Antony’s stay at the club –  a desire that the player himself is equally eager to see fulfilled.

But, Betis may struggle to meet United’s asking price, which is thought to be worth around £40m. The Spanish outfit are looking to do a loan deal but the Red Devils are not interested and want a permanent transfer. Talks remain ongoing to try and find a solution that works for all parties.

However, with Betis on the verge of selling midfielder Johnny Cardoso, their hopes of securing a deal for Antony may have been given a substantial lift.

According to Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano, Betis are on the brink of finalising the sale of Johnny Cardoso to La Liga rivals Atletico Madrid in a deal worth over €30 million (£25.6m).

Diego Simeone has been pushing for Atletico to sign the USA international, who has impressed in Sevilla since his arrival in January 2024, and it now appears he’s set to get his wish.

Betis could use the funds from Cardoso’s sale to accelerate their pursuit of Antony and potentially meet United’s financial demands for the 25-year-old.

As Metro note, United need to sell Antony for £32.58m to avoid a loss under the profit and sustainability rules (PSR).

The player is thought to be prepared to take a 30% wage cut to realise his dream of joining Betis permanently.
