Manchester United’s impressive 2024 continued this past weekend against Aston Villa with Scott McTominay scoring the winner.

Since 2024 began, Manchester United have been a different animal in comparison to how 2023 ended. This continued on Sunday as United silenced Villa Park with a 2-1 win.

The victory was massive for Erik ten Hag and was his first away from home against a top nine side since his appointment.

Rasmus Hojlund got on the scoresheet for the fifth consecutive Premier League fixture and right at the death, in the 86th minute, Scott McTominay put United 2-1 up and handed a vital three points to his boss.

After this, with Champions League qualification back on, McTominay has been heralded as a hero once again, and now Ben Foster has praised the 27-year-old.

Ben Foster thinks Scott McTominay will retire at Manchester United

Speaking on The Football Fill In, the former United goalkeeper, Foster, was discussing the weekend’s results. Among these was Ten Hag’s side picking up all three points at Villa Park.

He singled Harry Maguire out for praise and also the match winner McTominay. On the Scotland international, Foster explained that he’s just shown why he’ll probably be able to retire at United.

“He could make a career by staying at Manchester United, all the way through. Like I say, he’s not going to play every minute, he’s not going to start every game but you know what he will play for 10, 12, 13 years at Manchester United.”

Foster then explained why that is and emphasised how happy he is for the eight goal midfielder.

“By doing it properly and being that guy who, when the chips are down you need somebody to come on, or just for the odd game here, the cup games here and there and being that good guy around the place and I think Scott McTominay has turned into that.”

McTominay has been pivotal in saving Erik ten Hag’s job

McTominay is United’s current top scorer in the Premier League this season with seven goals. These goals have all come at vital times in games for United and they’re worth 12 points according to The Athletic.

Therefore, without McTominay’s goals, United would currently be sitting 12th in the league table and it’s likely Ten Hag wouldn’t be in a job.

So the boss is likely very grateful that he didn’t end up selling the Scotland star last summer. Although there is rightfully some concern over what over reliance on him means for United long term.
