Ben Chilwell makes Luke Shaw admission that serves as Manchester United boost – Manchester Evening News

Ben Chilwell admits that friendly competition with Manchester United defender Luke Shaw has helped to spur him on with Chelsea and England.

Both included as part of the Euro 2020 squad this summer, it was Shaw who edged out his fellow left-back as the Three Lions went on to reach the showpiece.

Of course, the United man even scored in the final beneath the famous Wembley arch vs eventual winners Italy.

A painful defeat via penalties left Chilwell, Shaw and the whole country feeling deflated as Gareth Southgate and his vibrant team, subsequently, edge closer to World Cup qualification.

Fixtures against Albania tonight and San Marino see England take their final steps on the road to Qatar.

They need four points from those two games to rubber-stamp their spot in the 2022 finals, while second-placed Poland have an inferior goal difference to serve as an added buffer in the event of any slip-ups when England get down to business.

As he continues to undergo concussion protocol on the back of impact during the Manchester derby, Shaw is not expected to start for the Three Lions against Albania.

Chilwell will, naturally, step into his place – but how does the Chelsea player view that ongoing battle?

He said: “When you’ve got someone in the same position as you, it doesn’t have to be; ‘Ah, you’re enemies’.

“You’re fighting for the same shirt – but you can be friends. It’s the same as me and Luke with England. We are very good friends when we’re here. I’d even go as far as to say he’s one of my good friends in the team.”
