Jude Bellingham has been advised to follow Virgil van Dijk’s lead by choosing Liverpool over their Premier League rivals Manchester United. Reds great Phil Thompson says the England sensation should not just follow the cash when picking his next career move.

Bellingham has seen his stock rise incredibly across the last couple of seasons. He has already made over 100 first-team appearances for Borussia Dortmund despite only turning 19 in June.

The teenager starred at the World Cup and is widely expected to complete a big move next summer. Thompson is a huge fan of Bellingham and reckons he is a generational talent that doesn’t come around too often.

The former defender exclusively told Express Sport: “He’s been outstanding. I think he’s a player who only comes along once in a while.

“Somebody so young but somebody so experienced. And I think that’s from the last couple of years playing regularly at Dortmund, which he might not have got the game time in the Premier League.

“I think he has progressed to becoming an all-round midfielder. I think he’s the sort of man who can see where he wants to play his football, at the right football club.”

Thompson, unsurprisingly, thinks his beloved Liverpool would be the right destination for Bellingham. However, it’s not purely on sentiment, but for the benefit of the player’s career.

Reds defender Van Dijk was linked with the likes of United and Manchester City in 2017 but was determined to join Liverpool. Thompson says Bellingham should follow suit and not just move to the club offering the best financial package.

Asked if Liverpool would be the right club for him, Thompson said: “I would have to say yes. You look at when we signed Virgil van Dijk, Virgil could have gone to City, he could have gone to Arsenal, he could have gone to Manchester United, but he chose Liverpool above them because it was the right club for him.

“And I think agents get involved and it’s the highest bidder and who will give the most money – you’d like to think some agents are looking, along with the player and sitting down with the family as well, and thinking ‘what is our next best move for his career?’.

“Because at his age, he’s got a long time in the game and he will get a lot of money wherever he goes.”
