Bayern Munich are confident Leon Goretzka will sign a new contract at the Allianz Arena despite the midfielder being linked with a move to Manchester United.
Goretzka’s existing deal at Bayern has less than 12 months to run and he is yet to sign an extension, but new boss Julien Nagelsmann believes the 26-year-old will commit his future to the club.
Bayern signed Goretzka on a free transfer from Schalke in 2018 and he was one of the few players to emerge from Germany’s disappointing European Championship campaign with credit this summer.
United are in the market for a new midfielder, a position that could become more pressing if Paul Pogba leaves this summer. Pogba also has less than a year remaining on his deal at Old Trafford and has been linked with Paris St-Germain.
United have been linked with a move for Goretzka in Germany, but Bayern are keen to tie him down to a new deal and Nagelsmann has already spoken to the player and outlined his plans, having taken over from Hansi Flick this summer.
“I’m not involved enough that I have a say every day. I stay out of these issues,” said Nagelsmann.
“Of course I have talked to him about my plans for him. I’ve told him I’d be happy if he extended and I’m also confident.
“There are several topics involved when it comes to discussing a contract extension.
“I’ll continue to focus on the sports side of things and show him he can be one of the most dangerous midfielders in Europe. He has potential to get even better.”
