Aston Villa issue angry statement in response to controversy vs. Man United

Aston Villa have issued a strongly worded statement, slamming the referee selection process for their meeting with Manchester United on the final day of the 2024/25 Premier League season.

United beat Villa 2-0 to condemn the Birmingham outfit to Europa League football. Amad and Christian Eriksen found the back of the net for the Red Devils.

The game was not without its share of controversy. Villa thought they had gone 1-0 up when Morgan Rogers took full advantage on an error from Bayindir.

The United goalkeeper came rushing out of his line to gather a ball from Harry Maguire but Rogers pipped him to it and guided it into the back of an empty net. Referee Thomas Bramall had however blown the whistle for a foul on Bayindir, sparing his blushes.

It looked as though Bayindir had two hands on the ball but replays showed that he didn’t.

To rub salt in the wound, United went down the other end just moments later and broke the deadlock through Amad. Eriksen then dispatched from the penalty spot to put the game to bed.

The moment proved costly for Villa, who needed just a point to secure Champions League qualification, especially with Newcastle falling to defeat against Everton.

David Ornstein reported that Villa were set to lodge an official complaint with the Premier League as they felt a more experienced referee should have taken charge of the game.

Unai Emery’s side have since issued a statement on the matter. Their statement read [via The Standard], “Aston Villa can confirm the club has written to the PGMOL to raise concerns over the selection process of match officials following today’s game with Manchester United at Old Trafford.”

“With such high stakes surrounding today’s fixture, the club believe a more experienced referee should have been appointed. Of the 10 referees to officiate across the Premier League today, Mr. Bramall was the 2nd least experienced.”

“The decision to disallow Morgan Rogers’ goal, which would have given the club a 1-0 lead with 17 minutes remaining in the match, was a major contributing factor to the club not qualifying for the Champions League.”

“As per the standards that have been established over the course of the season, a decision to whistle early is clearly inconsistent with current refereeing guidelines. VAR exists to ensure that these types of situations receive the scrutiny they deserve. Unfortunately, the technology was not allowed to serve its purpose.”

“Ultimately, we acknowledge that the outcome for us will not change, but we believe that it is important to address the selection methodology to ensure that high stakes matches are treated as such with regards to officiating and to ensure that the implemented VAR technology is allowed to be effective.”
