Arsenal’s midfield issues Now in November, Arsenal are one month and two days away from their African stars departing for the African Cup of Nations, which they are due to do on Boxing day.
For the Gunners, this will see them lose both Nicolas Pepe and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang from their forward line.
It is in midfield, however, that the problems begin to mount. Both Thomas Partey and Mohamed Elneny are due to be away for up to month, and miss up to seven Arsenal fixtures depending on how far their respective nations get in the competition.
At present then, this will leave Arsenal with just Ainsley Maitland-Niles and summer signing Sambi Lokonga as senior options in central midfield, thanks to a Granit Xhaka injury sustained in the North London derby victory at the end of September.

Xhaka is expected to be back come mid-December, which will come as a massive boost to the Gunners, but they could yet need to strengthen further in that area.
Jack Wilshere not an option One man who will not be joining the club, however, is Jack Wilshere. The Englishman has been training at London Colney, but speaking ahead of the clash with Newcastle, Mikel Arteta effectively shut the door on any romantic return for the Englishman.
Earlier in the week, Wilshere was named the best player in training by young gun Bradley Ibrahim, something which inevitably caught the eye.
Asked on the matter, Arteta revealed:
“No (he won’t join us) but I think it is a great compliment for Jack that the players playing alongside him think so highly of him. He is doing really well, better and better, and we know the qualities Jack has.”

Would you like to see Jack back in an Arsenal shirt, or has that ship sailed?
