Gabriel Martinelli has guaranteed himself an Olympic medal after helping Brazil qualify for the final of the men’s football in Tokyo, much to the delight of the Arsenal fanbase.

The defending champions had to struggle to reach the final after their semi-final with Mexico ended goalless after extra-time, but Dani Alves’ men were much more confident from 12 yards, as they went on to win 4-1 in the shootout.

Martinelli even stepped up in the penalty shootout, and confidently struck an unnerved spot-kick into the right-hand corner, giving experienced Mexican goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa no chance.

The 20-year-old was understandably pleased with the victory, but took to Twitter to explain that the job is not yet finished, as the South American side face Spain in the final, thanks to a late extra-time goal from reported Arsenal target, Marco Asensio.

“Rumo a final,” he said, which translates to “towards the final” as the Gunners forward has his eyes set on securing gold.

His tweet was followed up by several messages from Arsenal fans.

Some simply wished him good luck for the final, whereas others made declarations about him being better than other footballers – namely Mason Greenwood of Manchester United – while some even joked that he was as good as Lionel Messi.

Here’s a sample of what’s been said:

@goncalves17 said: “Martinelli is better than Greenwood, you have to see the light.”

@Jose_afc_x said: “Martinelli is better than Messi in my book.”

@afcjeedz said: “Let’s go gabi now go and win everything!”

@AFCFrediNho said: “Congrats Gabi, Olympics Medalist soon, From Ituano to the world.”

@afcteju said: “Good luck for the final in advance.”

With at least a silver medal under his belt ahead of the new Premier League season, Martinelli will be returning home to Arsenal with restored belief in his ability, and will be hoping to climb to the top of Mikel Arteta’s plans.
