Amorim targets yet another former player for United as former star at “forefront” of his mind – report

Manchester United are showing interest in yet another player at Ruben Amorim’s former club Sporting CP.

The Red Devils are keen to bolster their midfield this summer and have been linked to options such as Richard Rios and Ederson.

Sporting rejections

Ruben Amorim has not had much luck yet convincing his former stars to move to Old Trafford.

After much media speculation, the Red Devils missed out on Geovany Quenda who decided to join Chelsea earlier in the year.

United also failed to land Viktor Gyokeres, who is on the cusp of completing a sensational switch to Arsenal.

Morten Hjulmand targeted

The Danish international is a player that has long been on the club’s radar after numerous impressive displays in Portugal for Sporting.

It had been reported that the midfielder may be available this summer for less than his release clause but this does not seem the case anymore.

Amorim wants him

Portuguese outlet A Bola report that “Ruben Amorim wants to bring Hjulmand from Sporting.”

It is reported that “Manchester United wants to bolster the squad with another midfielder, and the Lions’ captain, is a priority target.”

Complicating the issue massively though is that “the Lions are calm and will only let go of the player if the €80 million release clause is paid.”

According to the outlet there has yet to be an approach for the player but the “Dane appears to be at the forefront of the coach’s plans.”

Hjulmand has already spoken out on his disappointment in Amorim’s decision to leave the club, hinting at their strong professional relationship.

Could United switch priorities?

The Dane’s release clause appears to be way more than United could afford for a midfielder at the moment.

Nonetheless, should they complete the sales of Jadon Sancho, Marcus Rashford, Antony and Alejandro Garnacho, money would be freed up.

In addition, with top striker targets like Victor Osimhen and Gyokeres off the table, United may decide to shift their budget from a striker to a midfielder, which would make the signing of the Dane more viable.
