Amorim favourite in line for shock sale as “United feel they can improve” on £55 million man

Despite his poor injury record, Manchester United midfielder Mason Mount had emerged as one of Ruben Amorim’s favourites due to his hard-working nature and his versatility.

The Englishman has missed a combined 60 games since signing for the Red Devils, something the head coach simply cannot work with moving forward.

The ex-Chelsea ace was mainly deployed as one of the attacking midfielders when fit, but given INEOS have already signed Matheus Cunha, and are close to securing Bryan Mbeumo, there is uncertainty surrounding where the 26-year-old fits in exactly in Amorim’s plans.

The Peoples Person had relayed that the former Sporting CP boss was contemplating using the England international as a backup for the No.10 position or play him as one of the advanced midfielders.

Uncertainty surrounding Mason Mount

Erik ten Hag had signed Mason Mount back in 2023 with that purpose in mind, even though the plan ultimately did not work out.

Is there really a fixed role for the versatile ace next season? Former United chief scout Mick Brown does not think so. In fact, he told Football Insider that Amorim will look to sell the midfielder this summer.

“There is a possibility Mason Mount is sold. They put a lot of stock into getting him fit again and getting him back to where he was.

“He’s played a number of games in succession now, but I think Amorim has made the decision that he doesn’t think he’s good enough. If they feel they can move him on and there’s enough interest, they’re prepared to do it.

“United will do the same thing with a few of their fringe players if offers are made. They’ve got Cunha and probably Mbeumo coming in to play in the positions he was being used in, so that is a sign of where he ranks in the squad.

United could look to sell

“It’s a shame he’s had these injuries since he arrived from Chelsea because there is a top player in there. United just feel they can improve in that position and that may mean moving him on.”

Whether INEOS can find a buyer for the injury-prone star remains doubtful. Not too many clubs will pay over the odds for the Englishman, which means it will be hard for United to recoup the £55 million they paid Chelsea initially.

His £250,000 gross per week wages (via capology) is another major stumbling block for potential suitors, and surely United do not want to subsidise another player’s exit after the recent talks surrounding Jadon Sancho’s future.

For now, it seems like Mount will be staying for at least one more season as Amorim feels his out-of-possession work-rate is key but if he cannot stay fit and get his act together, it is likely he departs either in January or next summer.
