‘Always respect’ – Patrice Evra argues Euro 2024 favourites are overlooking ‘very dangerous’ team, they can ‘hurt’ any side

Manchester United legend Patrice Evra has insisted that one team must ‘always be respected’ and are a “very dangerous” nation at Euro 2024 in Germany.

Euro 2024 is in full swing and tournament favourites Germany, England, Portugal and France have all competed in their first matches at the UEFA competition.

Host nation Germany kicked off Euro 2024 with an emphatic 5-1 demolition of 10-man Scotland in their Group A opener at the Allianz Arena last Friday.

England, who fell short of the Henri Delaunay trophy at Euro 2020, began their campaign with a hard-fought 1-0 win over Serbia in Group C on Sunday.

France, much like the Three Lions, navigated a tricky Group D opening match against Ralf Rangnick’s Austria side to claim a 1-0 win on Monday.

Portugal managed to weather the storm in their Group F encounter with the Czech Republic and clinched a 2-1 comeback win in injury time on Tuesday evening.

Evra sends warning to Euro 2024 favourites

Patrice Evra has dropped his two cents on this summer’s Euros and the Manchester United legend has spotlighted one “really underrated” team at the tournament.

He has also opened up about former club teammate Cristiano Ronaldo and what Portugal manager Roberto Martinez told him about the United legend.

Evra, who tipped one player to play a key role at Euro 2024, has now made his position perfectly clear on defending European champions Italy.

Italy won their opening Euro 2024 match last Saturday with a 2-1 victory over Albania in Group B, despite conceding in the first minute at the Westfalenstadion.

The reigning European Championship holders emerged victorious at Euro 2020 after a penalty shootout win against England in the final at Wembley.

But Italy are now without Roberto Mancini, who engineered their Euro 2020 run, after the Italian manager’s shock decision to resign from his post in 2023.

Former Inter Milan and Napoli boss Luciano Spalletti succeeded Roberto Mancini and Evra believes that Italy can rely on the 65-year-old Italian’s experience at Euro 2024.

“They have a manager [Luciano Spalletti] with great experience,” Evra said, as per the Hindustan Times.

“One has to always respect them because no team is better than them tactically. It felt strange not having them in a big tournament like the World Cup. This is a country with a football culture.

“So, trust me, it’s always tough to play against Italy. Sometimes, they all defend and you feel like it’s a boring game and at the last minute, they hurt you.

“They’re a big footballing nation and are very dangerous.”

Evra names his Euro 2024 favourites

Evra insisted that 2018 World Cup champions France remain the favourites to lift the Henri Delaunay trophy ahead of England, Portugal and Germany.

The 43-year-old ex-France and United defender claimed no other Euro 2024 team boasts the same squad depth that manager Didier Deschamps has at his disposal.

“It’s a no-brainer that France are the favourites,” Evra said.

“No team in the competition has a better squad than them. [France manager] Deschamps really wants that trophy.

“But the biggest enemy of France is France. The problem is sometimes we are too good and arrogant and too confident.

“Will other teams respect France and play too defensively and hurt us on counterattacks?

“So, we just have to be patient, not get frustrated and wait for the right time to hurt the opponent.”
