Manchester United suffered their 14th Premier League defeat of the campaign on Sunday as Newcastle comfortably swept Ruben Amorim’s side away at St James Park.
The 4-1 reverse leaves United planted in the bottom half of the table and firmly on course to register the club’s lowest ever Premier League finish. It was another bad day at the office for Amorim who continues to face question marks on his suitability to carry United into the new INEOS era.
However, it’s clear the 40-year-old coach doesn’t have the profile of players that suit his style and having been given the role in midway through the season, will expect to be given time to rebuild.
As relayed by MSN news, these sentiments are echoed by former Premier League striker Alan Shearer who insists United must stick with Amorim and back him in the coming transfer windows.
Speaking on The Rest is Football podcast, Shearer believes it will take time to turn United around and honed in on the positions Amorim is in most need of an upgrade in, this summer.
“We know Ruben Amorim has got a huge job on his hands, it’s going to take a lot of time and a lot of money to fix that football club. They need to stick with him. They’ve made their decision.
“He needs two or three transfer windows because they’re in desperate need of a centre forward, they’re in desperate need of a goalkeeper, they’re in desperate need of some legs in midfield,” he said.
Despite his long-term backing for Amorim, Shearer did have words of advice for the United head coach who has been stubborn with his philosophy since arriving in Manchester.
“What I find interesting is the fascination with playing out from the back. They’re basically not very good at it and had a goalkeeper today who isn’t good at it but they insisted on doing it.
“A manager’s job is to make players and the team better but Amorim is asking a lot of these players when they’re not very good at playing out from the back,” Shearer said.
The former Newcastle man concluded by highlighting the importance of United’s upcoming European tie admitting “everything relies on winning the Europa League”.
Success in Europe would not only grant United an unlikely ticket back into the Champions League but have a huge impact on what the club will be able to do in the summer market.
Amorim and his players will need to dust themselves down at Carrington this week before the crucial visit of Lyon on Thursday night.
