After scouting Gallagher, United are prepared to sign his teammate in a shock twist – report

Manchester United could knock on Atletico Madrid’s door in their bid to reinforce Ruben Amorim’s midfield.  Recently, The Guardian reported that United are monitoring Conor Gallagher as a potential January signing. The England international has fallen down the pecking order in the Spanish capital. Still, he is valued at about €40m-€50m by Atletico, whose preference is a sale, whereas United would rather sign him on loan.  The Red Devils have been chasing Gallagher since last summer and even made an unsuccessful loan bid for him late in the window.  Manchester United interested in Pablo Barrios As per a report in Teamtalk, in the process of scouting Gallagher, United have been left impressed by his teammate, Pablo Barrios. Barrios has established himself as a key part of Simeone’s side, having made 15 starts in La Liga so far this term. The 22-year-old’s rise has also impacted Gallagher’s playing time. “It’s hard to know quite how seriously to take him as a genuine target at this stage, but Pablo Barrios is a player that I have heard Man United really like,” said insider Dean Jones. “I think the interest may have even come as a consequence of looking at Conor Gallagher. But, regardless of how they ended up watching him, he’s spoken about glowingly at a few clubs and United are one of them.” Barrios is more highly-rated than Gallagher United’s insistence on signing Gallagher on a temporary basis points to a lack of belief in his ability. Meanwhile, the Spanish midfielder, who is known for his press-resistance and ball-carrying ability, has emerged as a “very good fit for what United want long term.” Needless to say, Atletico are reluctant to part ways with Barrios, who is tied to the Metropolitano until 2030. His contract includes a hefty €120m release clause. United have been quoted similar figures for the likes of Adam Wharton, Elliot Anderson and Carlos Baleba. Their Premier League experience makes them more reliable options than Barrios.
