“Add the right people”: Skinner demands big changes to help realise his United dream

Manchester United Women’s boss Marc Skinner is aiming to build a legacy at the club.

The Englishman joined United in 2021 and signed a contract extension until 2027 earlier this week.

He is the longest-serving manager in the team’s short history and he won the club’s first silverware last year when the team won the FA Cup.

His side are also flying high at the moment as they are in the semi-final of the FA Cup again and are third in the league, well-positioned to finish in a Champions League spot.

Speaking to the club’s official website, after penning his extension, he claimed his side was only at the start of their journey.

“I feel that, right now, I think we’re at the start. You know, that’s why this contract is really important, this extension. Because, for me, we’re just at the start of what I think we can achieve.”

He also stated that the club was on the same page and that they are committed to “bringing the right people in that will add to this young, vibrant, energetic group” and continue to “push the standards” at the club.

Skinner spoke of the need for any new player to have the flair and aggression to help him “to create a legacy” at the Leigh Sports Village.

The 42 year old admitted that his side is probably ahead of schedule as many expected them to struggle with the losses of senior pros Katie Zelem and Mary Earps last summer.

“I think it’s fair to have that conversation. We’ve pulled ourselves to a place with the right spirit, the right culture, where we can accelerate quicker. But we’ve got work to do, and we’re not there yet, and that’s why I want I want to bring the fans on the journey with us.”

He added that the environment and psychology of sport is vital to success and that “if we can get that young group to grow and add the right people to it, then, hopefully, we can talk about not overachieving and actually we’re just achieving what we should be achieving.”

United Women will next be in action when they face Manchester City in the FA Cup semi-final on Sunday 13th April.

Alex is a huge Manchester United fan, inspired by greats of his homeland such as George Best, Harry Gregg and Norman Whiteside. Proud owner of such niche shirts such as Kleberson, Eric Djemba-Djemba and Gary Neville. Grew up pretending to be Ruud van Nistelrooy and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in the back garden, with little success.
