AC Milan plotting shock move for former United star who has turned around his career in spectacular fashion – report

Former Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea is on the radar of AC Milan, as per reports.

De Gea bid farewell to United in the summer of 2023 after making 545 appearances and keeping a phenomenal 190 clean sheets for the Red Devils.

Then manager Erik ten Hag decided against handing the Spaniard a new contract, leading to his departure on a free transfer and the eventual arrival of Andre Onana.

The United legend who left Old Trafford on the back of a very disappointing campaign between the sticks had to wait for over a year to find his next club. Ahead of the 2024/25 season, Fiorentina agreed to sign De Gea on a one-year deal.

The 34-year-old took little time to find his rhythm, instantly establishing himself as a fan favourite in Florence.

De Gea has become the undisputed No 1 at Fiorentina, keeping an impressive 11 clean sheets in 33 Serie A appearances this term. His reflexes remain as sharp as ever and have even led to interest from Milan ahead of the summer transfer window.

AC Milan want Manchester United legend David de Gea

According to journalist Pietro Mazzara, Milan are exploring the market for a new shot-stopper amid uncertainty over Mike Maignan’s future.

The Frenchman is considered one of the best goalkeepers in Europe and has attracted the attention of several top clubs, including United, with his exploits at San Siro.

With Maignan’s current contract due to expire in just over 12 months, the Rossoneri have been forced to monitor potential replacements.

A report from Mazzara (via SempreMilan) reads: “Maignan, captain of Milan, has a verbal agreement until June 30, 2028, but in via Aldo Rossi they are also monitoring options that go free in the summer (De Gea among the names). As of May 12, this is what it looks like.”

De Gea’s contract at Fiorentina expires at the end of the season. However, Fabrizio Romano recently claimed that the Serie A outfit are set to activate the option to extend the deal by a further season. As such, Milan would have to find an agreement with La Viola should they decide to make a concrete move for the ex-United star.

As far as United’s goalkeeping department is concerned, the Red Devils are expected to sign a goalkeeper or two, with both Onana and Altay Bayındır failing to deliver convincing performances.
