“Absolutely gutted”: United star opens up on broken foot as club’s injury crisis claims another victim – report

Manchester United youngster Dan Gore has revealed his is “absolutely gutted” after a hairline fracture in his foot forced the midfielder to return to Old Trafford last week.

Gore has endured a frustrating season after a serious shoulder sustained in the summer ruled him out of action until November.

United had hoped the academy star would be able to continue his development away from the club with a number of teams in the football pyramid expressing an interest in taking the 20-year-old on loan in the winter window.

League One side Rotherham United, currently in 14th, won the race for Gore and he completed a switch to the New York Stadium at the end of January. The prospect of six months of first-team football at the senior level would be the perfect platform for the talented midfield starlet to recapture the form which made him one of United’s most highly-rated youngsters.

Gore made his debut for the The Millers off the bench against table toppers Birmingham City. And the 20-year-old wasted little time in making an immediate impact for his newly adopted side, setting up Rotherham’s only goal with an excellent cross for striker Sam Nombe in the 2-1 defeat.

However, despite the promising start, Gore’s then unfortunate campaign suffered yet another set back after picking up a foot injury in training.

Rotherham manager Steve Evans then took the bizarre step by stating Gore’s injury was the “strangest thing in the world”, claiming the midfielder had not trained hard to have picked up a “sore nose, let alone a sore foot.”

Further tests then revealed the 20-year-old had sustained a hairline fracture in his metatarsal with the expectation that he would be ruled out for a number of weeks.

He then subsequently returned to Old Trafford to complete rehabilitation on the injury with United executives believed to be thoroughly unimpressed with the Rotherham manager’s comments.

Gore has now revealed he is “absolutely gutted” at being ruled out with injury again after a brilliant experience in Rotherham.

“Having loved the start to my time here and been made to feel so welcome by everyone at the club, I am absolutely gutted to have picked up an injury,” the academy graduate states.

“Everyone who knows me knows that I would play through any pain if I physically could, but unfortunately, I need to take a few weeks out. I’ll be giving everything to get back as soon as possible to contribute to the team and be able to play in front of the fans again.”

United’s official statement on Gore’s return confirmed the metatarsal injury and revealed the club’s academy would “work closely with Rotherham United to support Dan to return as soon as possible.”
