10/10 ground duels, 7 tackles, 90% passing: this United star was an unstoppable force in 2-1 win over Viktoria Plzen

Manchester United were fortunate to clinch a late 2-1 win over Viktoria Plzen in their UEFA Europa League clash on Thursday night.

While Man United retained 68% possession, they proved highly ineffective with the ball, struggling to penetrate the hosts’ defence.

In fact, it was United’s insistence on playing out from the back that led to Plzen’s opening goal. Andre Onana accidentally passed the ball to the opposition, who took advantage of his blunder to grab the lead within three minutes of the second half.

Although United did well to up the ante near the end, significantly improving their attacking game, Casemiro was one of the few players who exhibited consistency throughout the match.

The Brazilian proved to be the versatile central midfielder that manager Ruben Amorim required, strong in both passing and tracking back to support his defence.

Casemiro was highly effective at the back, making a goal-saving slide tackle to make up for an error in the box by Diogo Dalot.

In total, the midfielder made a massive seven tackles. In addition, he performed three clearances while blocking two shots and making an interception.

Casemiro was clinical when it came to passing, completing 56 of 62 attempted passes for a 90% completion rate.

His long balls were also effective, with three of four reaching their target; however, his only cross failed to meet its mark. He also completed one key pass.

The Brazilian was absolutely flawless when it came to his physicality, winning all 10 of his ground duels. While he only won one of four aerial duels, he proved to be an unshakeable force with the ball at his feet.

Casemiro attempted just one dribble, which he completed successfully.

Although it was a largely disappointing performance by United, Casemiro proved to be at his peak, silencing his critics who may have felt that his best days were behind after his struggles last season. Clearly, the veteran midfielder still has plenty to offer.
