Manchester United welcome Everton to Old Trafford on Sunday, in Ruben Amorim’s first taste of Premier League action at home.

The Red Devils against the Toffees is one of the most historical games in English football and they have played each other 213 times in total.

United have come out on top 95 times, they have drawn 47 and lost on 71 occasions.

The home side won both fixtures last season with a comfortable 3-0 win at Goodison Park, sparked by Alejandro Garnacho’s world-class bicycle kick, and a 2-0 victory at Old Trafford.

Here are three storylines to get into before the match on Sunday.

United’s recent domination at Old Trafford against Everton

Fans at Old Trafford have certainly become used to a victory over Everton.

According to The BBC, Everton “have won just two of their 32 Premier League visits to Old Trafford, most recently in 2013.”

This was a 0-1 loss for United at Old Trafford under David Moyes when Bryan Oviedo struck a late winner.

It hasn’t been back to back defeats though, as they did draw two matches in 2021 but United have won the last three matches at home on the bounce.

The dominance as of late extends to both home and away games as the Red Devils have won the last five consecutive games against the Toffees with an aggregate scoreline of 12-2.

Marcus Rashford will be looking to profit versus Everton again

The Englishman has improved from last season but is by no means back to his flowing best.

He has scored five goals and provided three assists in 20 matches this season for his boyhood club, including the opening goal of the Amorim era last weekend at Ipswich Town.

Rashford has been directly involved in five goals in his past seven Premier League games against Everton, scoring in the last two.

He netted a penalty in both Premier League fixtures last season and will be hoping to grab another goal as he aims to kick on and become a regular in Amorim’s system.

The new head coach has already stated he is ready to try and nurture the 27 year old back to form but he must “want it” more than anyone else.

Don’t expect many goals

Hopefully the data means nothing and United go on to complete a comfortable victory tomorrow afternoon, but this season has not been the best for goal loving fans in matches involving either team.

“There have been 26 goals scored in Premier League matches involving Manchester United this campaign, a joint-league low alongside Newcastle United. Everton’s matches have produced only 27 goals,” BBC state.

What we can probably expect is missed chances though as “United have scored 13 goals from an expected goals tally of 18.3 in the Premier League this term, the biggest negative differential of any team.”

In addition, Everton have failed to score in a league-high six fixtures, although only Liverpool and Manchester United have kept more clean sheets than the Toffees’ four.

While goals would be nice, Amorim has stated he cares most about the result, so he would almost certainly take a 1-0 victory to grab his first Premier League win.

Alex is a huge Manchester United fan, inspired by greats of his homeland such as George Best, Harry Gregg and Norman Whiteside. Proud owner of such niche shirts such as Kleberson, Eric Djemba-Djemba and Gary Neville. Grew up pretending to be Ruud van Nistelrooy and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in the back garden, with little success.
