Shock swap deal on the cards between United and Serie A giants, Amorim could land €100m former Man City target – report

Manchester United’s need for midfield reinforcements is clear to see with their current options including two players over the age of 32.

Christian Eriksen has enjoyed a fine personal campaign thus far, seeing a major rise in minutes under former boss Erik ten Hag, while also emerging as the club’s second top-scorer this term.

The Dane’s passing ability remains unmatched but Ruben Amorim demands intensity from his players, something the former Tottenham Hotspur man will find hard to match given his age.

And Casemiro, who really shone under interim boss Ruud van Nistelrooy, is also on the same boat and the Portuguese is reportedly open to moving both on in January.

Midfield reinforcements

And they could get hands on the ideal replacement if Gazzetta dello Sport is to be believed. It is no secret at this stage that Juventus want struggling United forward Joshua Zirkzee.

Thiago Motta’s fascination with his former protege means the Turin-based outfit are in the lead though other surprising suitors remain in the race.

But owing to their financial situation, the Bianconeri are in no position to pay what the Old Trafford side will demand for the striker.

And the outlet have suggested that Juve could look to offload Douglas Luiz in return for Zirkzee, something that would suit both parties.

The Brazilian has endured a nightmare spell in Serie A since his summer move, starting only twice while suffering a recent muscle injury.

The former Aston Villa man was a former Manchester City target and was valued at €100 million but could make the move to the red side of Manchester if both parties agree to the shocking swap deal.

Zirkzee-Luiz swap

“What can happen in January is no longer a secret, also due to the needs of Juve who must make the market to fix the defense and attack with a reduced budget.

“Instead, with the help of the Brazilian’s entourage (the same as Zirkzee) they could try to build the road for an exchange on equal terms with another player who wants a change of scenery during the season.”

Luiz can play all across the midfield and has experience of playing in the English top-flight. His age and profile makes him the perfect fit for both INEOS and Amorim.

But a lot of ifs and buts remain and it will be interesting to see if such a move actually pans out.
