It’s been another dramatic week at Old Trafford after the controversial defeat in the Manchester Derby was followed by the bombshell news that wonderkid JJ Gabriel wants to leave the club.

The highly rated 15-year-old has reportedly expressed his desire to continue his development elsewhere just a few weeks before his 16th birthday, in a move that feels like it was long in the making from his advisers.

It was believed the youngster was going to be part of the first team squad who entertain Brighton in the Carabao Cup later, with the plan of making him United’s youngest ever player during the match.

However, although United’s hierarchy believe the situation can still be salvaged, it is unlikely he will play a part in tonight’s game, given the chaos in the last 24 hours.

Teammate shows loyalty to United

Should Gabriel get his wish of a move, it will leave Shea Lacey as Manchester United’s best hope for a breakthrough star into the first team, and the talented attacker quickly took to social media after the news broke of his wantaway teammate.

As reported by the Daily Mail, Lacey posted on X a photo of him walking into Old Trafford alongside a red love heart in a cryptic post that has gathered over 100,000 likes from United supporters.

In stark contrast to Lacey, Gabriel has wiped out any mention of United on his social media accounts in a bizarre move that appears to underline his desire to leave Manchester in the coming weeks.

Liverpool-born Lacey has been a standout player in United’s youth ranks and impressed in his fleeting moments in the first team last season, despite seeing red, ironically in a cup game against Brighton in one of his appearances.

The 19-year-old will be desperate to put that right should he be chosen for game time tonight and show United fans that he is a prodigy they can trust to do the best by the club.

It’s likely Michael Carrick will rotate some first team stars for the Brighton game, and Lacey might just get his chance to impress and nail down a place in the squad for the remainder of the campaign.

What Next?

As mentioned, whilst United still believe they can convince Gabriel to change his mind, full focus will be on turning around the fortunes of the first team who have endured a difficult start to the season.

No doubt the departure of such a promising young talent will be a blow to the club, but progress in the cup tonight will go some way to lightening the load on Carrick, who is under pressure, even at this early stage of his first full campaign in charge.

Fans will be waiting with bated breath to see just who is included in tonight’s matchday squad, but expect a packed house at the Theatre of Dreams expecting a response to the damaging Derby defeat.

Manchester United vs Brighton kicks off at 20:00 GMT.
