Man United plot opportunistic raid on PL rivals defensive stalwart as contract clock ticks down

Expectations are that a top left-back will arrive at Old Trafford in 2027.

Alongside the midfield overhaul, strengthening the left-back position was another priority for the 20-time English champions this past window.

Unfortunately, Manchester United did not manage to address that transfer need after they addressed their midfield needs.

Unanswered left-back need

Failing to sign a left-back when the need was clear has since been interpreted as INEOS simply pausing that pursuit to revisit it next year.

Between now and then, the Red Devils will be weighing their options to bolster the position.

It is already becoming clear that their top summer target, Lewis Hall, may no longer be available. The Englishman has signed a new deal with Newcastle United and has expressed a desire to stay there long term.

Hall aside, AFC Bournemouth’s Adrien Truffert has emerged as a leading target and is being followed closely.

Tyrick Mitchell in the mix

Now, though, according to Football Insider, Truffert is not the only Premier League left-back on United’s radar.

The outlet reports: “Manchester United are keeping a close eye on Tyrick Mitchell’s contract situation at Crystal Palace with a summer move in mind.”

INEOS are said to be looking to take advantage of Mitchell’s contract expiring next summer.

Interestingly, Crystal Palace, though expected to, are yet to open contract extension talks, which has piqued interest at Old Trafford.

A quality left-back with Premier League experience is exactly what INEOS have prioritised for their project, and Mitchell ticks almost every box of what the Red Devils are looking for in the market.

The Englishman can be a fitting replacement for Luke Shaw, with the long-serving United star now expected to leave when his contract expires next summer.
