Manchester United failed to get past Gianluigi Donnarumma in their frustrating derby defeat at Old Trafford.

Manchester City went down to 10 men early in the game and still somehow managed to pick up all three points. The Red Devils should certainly have done more to test Donnarumma, but they still created plenty of chances, including hitting the woodwork twice on Sunday.

At this point, United’s attack remains far from a major concern. Instead, the focus needs to be on their lacklustre defence, which has yet to keep a clean sheet in the Premier League.

Manchester United watching Jarrad Branthwaite

According to talkSPORT, Manchester United are planning a major overhaul of their back line next summer.

Luke Shaw, Harry Maguire, and Lisandro Martinez are all out of contract at the end of the season, and United appear keen on adding fresh blood at the back.

It is understood United retain an interest in Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite.

In the summer of 2024, United reportedly had two offers for the England international rejected. At the time, Branthwaite was willing to move to Old Trafford.

Since then, the 24-year-old has struggled with injury, but United are thought to be keeping an eye on his form this season.

“Branthwaite will not come cheap, though, having penned a new five-year deal at the start of last season,” the report adds.

Why Manchester United like Jarrad Branthwaite

Branthwaite has made an impressive start to the new season, having played every minute in the first four Premier League matches for Everton.

The 6’5″ defender is a dominant presence at the back, possessing excellent pace and positional awareness. Branthwaite is comfortable defending wide areas, something all United defenders struggle with.

Branthwaite is also calm and composed with the ball at his feet and would help United build from the back and play a high line.

The club’s two bids in 2024 suggest he has already impressed their scouts, and it would be Everton’s price tag and his fitness that would have a major say on United’s pursuit.

The Peoples Person Reliability Assessment
Overall credibility: 9/10
Why?

✅ Branthwaite is a long-term United target
✅ The player fits United’s tactical profile
✅ United intend to reinforce their defence

TPP view
We believe United’s interest is genuine and they may step up their interest next year.
