Michael Carrick’s dream Marcus Rashford replacement as Man Utd sign 60million star – Daily Mirror

Michael Carrick could go for an unorthodox approach in replacing Marcus Rashford at Manchester United

The future of Marcus Rashford has once again been reignited. The Manchester United attacker remains on course for a return to Carrington after he completes his post-World Cup break.

His reunion with the Red Devils was approved by United boss Michael Carrick despite not having played for the club since 2024. Loan spells with Aston Villa and Barcelona kept the 28-year-old away from Manchester, with many believing his career with his boyhood club had come to an end.

However, Barcelona’s decision to sign Anthony Gordon instead of paying the £26m option to acquire Rashford permanently left him in limbo. A meaningful offer to sign Rashford has yet to be received by United, but the wheels may be turning on his eventual departure from the Premier League giants.

The Sun reports that Rashford is part of a three-man shortlist for Fenerbahce, including AC Milan forward Rafael Leao and Crystal Palace winger Ismaila Sarr. They add that the Englishman’s representatives have been contacted by the Turkish giants over a potential move.

If a move for Rashford to the Super Lig pans out, Carrick’s plan of replacing the England star could revolve around Newcastle left-back Lewis Hall. Such an acquisition may sound baffling at first, but it could be quite the masterstroke from the United boss.

Patrick Dorgu became a key – and versatile – asset for United last season when fit, playing more games in left-midfield and left-wing than in his natural left-back position. With four goals and four assists to his name in the 25/26 campaign, the Danish international proved to be a legitimate option across United’s attack.

Matheus Cunha possesses Rashford’s No. 10 shirt and his position on the left flank, with some suggesting Dorgu’s go-to role this upcoming season will be playing back-up to the Brazilian.

If that is the case, Carrick will only have Luke Shaw as his realistic option at left-back, thus opening the door to the arrival of Hall, who has emerged as a key target for United this summer.

The 21-year-old is reportedly considered as the long-term replacement to Shaw and United are said to be considering an initial bid of around £60m to prise him away from St James’ Park. His departure would mark the fourth major exit from Newcastle this summer, following Gordon, Sandro Tonali, and boss Eddie Howe.

The England defender represents the present and future for United, with his versatility also proving to be a valuable asset. So far in his career, Hall has played 26 matches at left midfield, as per to transfermarkt.

While he’s keen to become an out-and-out first-choice left-back, reportedly blaming his World Cup omission on Howe’s varied use of him in the second half of last season, he will slowly replace Shaw – now 31 – as United’s starter.

Carrick will need such depth for what he’ll hope is a much longer campaign than the last when United exited the domestic cup competitions early and had no European football. And if he could sell the long-term vision to Hall, then he’ll have plenty of options to play with on the left side of the pitch.
