Manchester United are still in the market for new signings before the transfer window closes and have been linked with several players in recent weeks
Manchester United still have three pre-season matches remaining before the start of the new Premier League campaign. And Michael Carrick will be hoping to welcome some recruits through the Old Trafford door.
After guiding United to a top-four finish, Carrick was named permanent boss in May. So far, alongside the arrival of youngsters Tynan Thompson and Kit Margetson, only three senior signings have been made.
But, United are reported to be among the clubs attempting to sign Bologna defender Jhon Lucumi, as they look to bolster their defence. Meanwhile, the club’s chances of securing Bayern Munich star Kim Min-jae have suffered a setback. Here, The Manchester Evening News examines some of the biggest stories surrounding United.
Bayern Munich star’s transfer stance
Bayern Munich defender Kim Min-jae has outlined that he will stay and fight for his place at the German side. United have been linked with a potential move for the 29-year-old, with their interest stretching back to his time at Napoli, but the South Korea international is committed to remaining with Vincent Kompany’s team.
“As a player, just to be with a team like Bayern Munich is a blessing,” Kim said. “Last season, I thought I played a lot of matches. I am competing as the third defender [behind Upamecano and Tah], and I know I have no choice but to work hard. I think the coach will give me a lot of opportunities, and I think I will stay put.”
When pressed on Kim’s position at the club, Bayern manager Kompany highlighted the value of having players vying for the same spot: “The main thing is to have the quality.
“Then afterwards, it is for them to compete to prove on the pitch. What I will give a compliment to Min-jae [about] is that no matter what, he keeps the focus, and he does the talking on the pitch.”
Defender wants to join ‘big club’
United are reportedly one of several clubs competing for Bologna centre-back Jhon Lucumi, who is seeking a high-profile transfer this summer. The 28-year-old featured in Colombia’s World Cup squad and is reported to have caught the eye of Juventus.
Quotidiano Sportivo claims the Old Lady have had a £15million bid turned down by Bologna, who place Lucumi’s value at £24m. United are also reported to have registered their interest, though they face stiff competition for Lucumi from Chelsea, Como, Napoli and Nottingham Forest.
In terms of the player’s stance, Lucumi reportedly “wants the big clubs”, which could enhance United’s prospects of winning the transfer race. The defender has spent four seasons with Bologna and featured 43 times across all competitions last term.
