Former Manchester United forward Jadon Sancho’s future has taken another twist. The Englishman is yet to join a club since leaving the Red Devils this summer as a free agent.
The Premier League giants oversaw a massive revamp of the attack last summer, with only Amad and Joshua Zirkzee surviving from the previous group. Former head coach Ruben Amorim opted to offload players who did not fit his tactical system and attitude demands, leading to the formation of the infamous bomb squad.
Rasmus Hojlund, Marcus Rashford, and Sancho were all sent out on loan, while Alejandro Garnacho and Antony were sold to Chelsea and Real Betis respectively. Hojlund has since joined Napoli permanently, while Barcelona turned down the option to make Rashford’s stay permanent.
Sancho, who had joined Aston Villa on loan last summer, had a fruitful end to the season, winning the Europa League. However, the Villans decided not to pursue a permanent move for the player, even though he would not have cost a penny this summer.
Sancho’s struggles at United
Sancho was signed by former United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in the summer of 2021, but was deemed surplus to requirements by both Erik ten Hag and Amorim. The Englishman spent the last two-and-a-half years of his spell at Old Trafford out on loan, having failed to live up to expectations.
Considered one of the brightest young talents in the land during his days with Borussia Dortmund, the 25 year old’s time with the Red Devils was disappointing to say the least. Sancho managed just 12 goals and six assists in 83 outings for the club during his stay.

After a fallout with Ten Hag in the summer of 2023, Sancho was initially banished from first-team training, before returning to Dortmund on loan for the second half of the season. The Bundesliga club, however, opted against securing his services on a permanent basis at the end of the campaign.
Sancho then joined Chelsea on loan for the 2024/25 season, with an obligation to buy at the end of the campaign. However, the Blues paid United a fine to come out of that commitment as the player returned to Old Trafford once again.
It was clear that the player was becoming a problem for the Red Devils, before Aston Villa bet on him last summer. Now without a club, Sancho’s future remains uncertain, and a recent update suggests that a return to Signal Iduna Park may not be on the cards either.
Dortmund unlikely to move for Sancho
According to Ruhr Nachrichten, Dortmund are unlikely to move for Sancho this summer. The report states: “According to information obtained by RN, a return for the Englishman – which has been the subject of repeated media speculation for months, but was never actually planned within the club – is becoming increasingly unlikely.”
Sancho’s inability to perform under different managers has raised doubts at the Bundesliga club, who no longer see him as a game changer. Meanwhile, the fact that the Englishman has yet to receive any offers despite being a free agent has further added to their concern.
The report also suggests that FC Koln’s Said El Mala has emerged as an alternative to Sancho for Dortmund, adding: “This paints an increasingly clear picture: rather than Sancho, BVB are going all out for Said El Mala! However, 1. FC Köln remain the biggest obstacle. Dortmund’s initial bid was rejected.”

United are preparing for an exciting season ahead, and apart from talented players, they also need the right attitude in the dressing room to succeed. Sancho’s struggles to find a club despite being a free agent have vindicated the Red Devils’ decision to let him leave this summer for free.
