Chido Obi’s long-term future at Manchester United has come into question.
When United secured him from Arsenal, where he had scored thirty-two goals in twenty-four appearances for the Gunners’ youth teams, many saw the move as a massive coup. United had landed one of the most exciting young talents in English football, and the future looked bright.
Chido Obi’s impressive maiden season at Manchester United
Obi wasted no time hitting the ground running, impressing for the United academy with his goalscoring prowess. He scored five goals in four league games for the Under-18s and two goals in six league games for the Under-21s. On top of that, he registered five goals in three FA Youth Cup games.
Obi’s potential was clear for all to see, and when injuries struck United’s attack, Ruben Amorim called him up, handing the young striker seven league appearances.
Quiet 2025-26
His maiden season as a Red Devil was promising, and fans rightfully tipped him for an even better 2025-26 campaign, with many expecting him to earn more chances with the first team.
However, INEOS opted against using him at first-team level last season. Sources suggested the club felt he had been exposed too early.
Consequently, Obi spent last season playing academy football instead, and he did well: four goals in five FA Youth Cup games, plus thirteen goals in twenty-two Under-21 league games.
That said, after those two impressive campaigns, Obi should be ripe for first-team football. He should be in contention for a key role under Michael Carrick. However,, that looks unlikely, and the Manchester Evening News‘ Steven Railston explains why.
Questions over his development
Railston argues that Obi’s absence from the trip to Sweden for the friendly against Atletico Madrid, despite impressing against Rosenborg, tells its own story.
He then hints at the doubts surrounding Obi’s readiness, explaining:
“It’s telling that Obi still needs to receive constant instructions from coaches on the touchline throughout a game. It has become a running joke that no other player’s name is heard more often than Obi’s during academy fixtures.”
Permanent exit considered
Railston goes on to admit: “There was talk of FC Köln being interested in Obi on loan earlier in the window, but sources squashed those reports. Another loan is on the cards, though a permanent transfer might also be considered.”
A loan exit would make sense for Obi if he does not feature in Carrick’s plans. A permanent exit, certainly, would sting, and it might end up mirroring the James Garner transfer blunder.
Obi has proven himself brilliant in academy football, and with better development and patience, he should easily tap into his potential and become the deadly striker many tipped him to be.
