Manchester United’s clear priority is to strengthen their midfield. The Athletic claims that United are exploring potential deals for several midfielders, with Ederson likely to be the first to arrive at Old Trafford, as the Red Devils are in advanced talks with Atalanta. However, the club have also made moves for other midfield targets. Manchester United targeting Alex Scott According to The Athletic’s Mark Critchley and Laurie Whitwell, Bournemouth midfielder Alex Scott is a potential target for Manchester United. While Ederson has earned plaudits for his physicality, strong tackles and ground coverage, Scott’s best work comes when he is in possession of the ball. The technically gifted Englishman likes to receive the ball in tight areas, drop a shoulder and drive his side forward. However, when needed, the 22-year-old is defensively combative. Former Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola famously called Scott an “unbelievable player”. Manchester United handed a major boost Bournemouth are keen to keep hold of their prized asset. Last month, it was reported that the Cherries had offered a new deal to Scott. The Athletic, however, claims “an extension is seen as unlikely” for the player tied to Bournemouth until the summer of 2028. Furthermore, it is understood United have already “made inquiries as to the cost of a deal.” If Scott refuses to sign a new contract on the south coast, Bournemouth may be forced to consider reasonable offers for the silky midfielder rather than letting him run down his contract. The report adds that Sandro Tonali also has admirers at United, although Newcastle United’s asking price, closer to £100m, would likely prove prohibitive.
