Jose Mourinho sets his sights on former United striker desperate for World Cup glory

Jose Mourinho is one of the most successful Manchester United managers of the last decade, and he wants to tap into his former club to bring some success to Benfica. Mourinho remains unbeaten in the league since taking the reins at the Lisbon club. Despite this remarkable achievement, he is currently unlikely to win the title this season. His side trails both Sporting CP and Porto, with the former having a game in hand. The former United manager is set to turn his attention to a former cult hero of the club to try to win the title next season. Mourinho targets Wout Weghorst ahead of the summer transfer window Mourinho is reportedly eyeing a move for Wout Weghorst this summer. The report states the Portuguese coach is looking to boost the attacking prowess of his Benfica attack heading into the new season.Weghorst is currently playing football in the Netherlands with Ajax. He scored two goals in 31 appearances for United during his loan at the club. The report comes from Dutch publication Het Parool. Weghorst is out of contract at Ajax in June.  Mourinho is said to be keen on bringing a player of his talents to the Portuguese club. The pair have never worked together before, but the profile of the player is said to be of intrigue to Mourinho. Weghorst profile of interest to Mourinho Benfica had previously been targeting Lorenzo Lucca in the January window, who is of a similar ilk to Weghorst. The Italian instead chose to sign for Nottingham Forest. There had been reports that Weghorst was set to join FC Twente. Erik ten Hag, the man who signed him at United is the sporting director at the club. Weghorst is currently free to speak to other clubs. The report states the player is yet to make up his mind on his future. The striker faces a battle to be named in the upcoming World Cup squad for the Netherlands. Joshua Zirkzee will be one of the names Weghorst is competing with for a spot.
