Former United captain is latest to sign up for exciting legends match to celebrate 50th anniversary

Manchester United legends have added a former club captain to their squad. A group of former Red Devils will get together to play a match to raise money for the Manchester United Foundation. Some glamour ties over the years have seen United come up against the likes of Real Madrid, FC Barcelona and Bayern Munich. A particularly happy memory was the 2019 match, a 20-year anniversary of the 1999 Champions League final between United and Bayern. Unlike the real match, it was not so close as United ran out 5-0 winners. Antonio Valencia The club’s official website has announced that, “Antonio Valencia is set to be on Manchester United Legends duty, when we take on Southampton next month.” Valencia joined Manchester United from Wigan Athletic in the summer of 2009. The Ecuadorian played 339 times for the Red Devils, scoring 25 goals in total. He joined the club as a right winger but gradually transformed into a right-back and spent a significant amount of his United career in a more defensive role. Valencia was named club captain in 2018 by Portuguese manager Jose Mourinho after the retirement of Michael Carrick. The powerful winger won nine major honours with the Red Devils, including two Premier League titles. He left the club in 2019 on a free transfer before signing for LDU Quito in his native country and Querétaro F.C. in Mexico before retiring in May 2021. Upcoming legends match The legends match will take place on Saturday, 28th March at 15:00 GMT at St Mary’s Stadium. The match is being held as the 50th anniversary of Southampton’s 1976 FA Cup final victory over United. What’s more, “Wes Brown, Dimitar Berbatov and Louis Saha are among the other names expected to feature for the Reds on the south coast” alongside Valencia.
