BACK David Tully Feb 17th 2026 Man Utd are contemplating a surprise summer bid for Liverpool midfielder Alexis Mac Allister, according to reports. The Daily Star claim that the World Cup winner is on the club’s shortlist as they look to reinforce their options in the middle of the park. Considering that transfers rarely take place between the two North West rivals, fans on X are extremely sceptical about the accuracy of this report: Not a chance — Jacob Welding (@WeldingJac72164) February 16, 2026 Is this a joke? Liverpool would never sell a player to Manchester United — Mankind Press (@Mankind_crypton) February 16, 2026 Erm no… Whoever even thought of that should be sacked. You do not buy players directly off any of our major rivals — Jay Condron 🏴🇬🇧 (@CQNJay) February 16, 2026 In what world would Liverpool sell a player, even a decent player to a direct rival, that too their biggest rival? Who even reports stuff like this? — Sarb (@saarrrbbbb) February 16, 2026 Gotta love the comic book writers, how about szbozo as well in a double deal? — PSR (@PSR_Mufc) February 16, 2026 Since when do we buy players from Liverpool 😂😂🤦🏾 — Jermaine Jeffries (@Jermainejeffri1) February 16, 2026 Mac Allister’s form has raised questions about his future The Argentinian international has struggled to replicate the performances that helped Liverpool secure the Premier League title last season. That has prompted some speculation about whether he will stay at Anfield in the long term, although it must be said most of the rumours about a departure have linked him with moves to Spain. The Daily Star report that to stand any chance of recruiting Mac Allister, United would need to qualify for the Champions League anyway. Man Utd have several other midfield targets Many supporters would rightly regard an approach for Mac Allister as unrealistic. The Red Devils are, however, considering a number of other options ahead of the summer. Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson has been widely reported as United’s top target, but his £100m+ price tag and interest from rivals Manchester City might make that deal hard to secure. Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton, Wolves’ Joao Gomes and Brighton’s Carlos Baleba are also believed to be on the club’s radar. Want more news on Man Utd?
