“Second-rate foreign managers…”: Ex-PL boss fires stern warning to INEOS over Carrick’s Man United future

Former Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham United manager Harry Redknapp has called for Michael Carrick to be given the Manchester United head coach position on a permanent basis. United brought him in during December as a temporary replacement for Ruben Amorim, who was dismissed after 14 months in charge. Carrick beat Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to the role and so far, he is proving to be a shrewd acquisition. He has taken charge of four Premier League games, winning all of them. United have beaten Manchester City, Arsenal, Fulham and most recently Tottenham in that superb run. But Carrick’s impact extends well beyond the results, which currently have the Red Devils firmly within the frame to finish within the guaranteed Champions League places. Almost overnight, he has brought in a front-foot, positive style of football that has the fans believing once more. While opposition defences have struggled to contain United’s aggressive approach, debate persists over whether Carrick is the right long-term choice for the club. The likes of Roy Keane and Gary Neville have argued that United should not go for Carrick – a claim that was rubbished by Michael Owen. Speaking after the 3-2 win over Tottenham, Rio Ferdinand explained that it is getting increasingly difficult to ignore Carrick for the role permanently. Redknapp has now weighed in, urging United to give him the job. Redknapp backs Carrick Redknapp, who gace Carrick is senior debut at West Ham in 1999, said [as quoted by The National], “I saw him when he was a 12-year-old at West Ham.” “He used to come down from Newcastle during the school holidays. He’s just the nicest guy, fantastic footballer, class player, passed the ball, read the game, and I’m just so happy that he’s got a chance.” “We don’t have to keep bringing in second-rate foreign managers to England. There’s enough lads there. Give them the opportunity to do the job.” “There’s lads in the lower divisions. Give them an opportunity.” Redknapp added, “Michael’s got a chance now, so I’m pulling every week for him to keep getting results and get that job on a full-time basis.” United are next in action on Tuesday when they go away to West Ham.
