Great news for Amorim and United as hugely encouraging Fernandes injury update emerges – report

A very encouraging fitness update on Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has been provided ahead of Friday’s meeting with Newcastle. Fernandes picks up injury Beyond the disappointing 2-1 loss at the hands of Aston Villa last weekend, the other major frustration was Fernandes’ injury. The United midfielder pulled up with an injury in the dying embers of the first half shortly after being the subject of an aggressive challenge from Amadou Onana. Fernandes was clearly in discomfort as play was temporarily halted to give him a moment. He tried to continue but it was clear he could not carry on. Ruben Amorim took him off at the interval and replaced him with Lisandro Martinez, who saw out the game in a largely unfamiliar midfield position alongside Manuel Ugarte. After the game, Amorim confirmed that Fernandes had sustained a soft tissue problem. Amorim also indicated that Fernandes would be out for a while. An update has now emerged and it’s a positive one. According to the Daily Mail, the 31-year-old’s injury is not as bad as initially feared and there is hope he could be back within the next four weeks. Fernandes injury update The Daily Mail claim, “United are increasingly confident that Fernandes’ hamstring injury is not too serious and their captain could be back in action inside a month.” “Fernandes limped out of Sunday’s defeat by Aston Villa at half-time and now faces as a rare spell on the sidelines during the busy festive period – but could even be in contention for the Manchester derby on January 17.” The newspaper contends that Mason Mount may have to drop into a deeper midfield role to provide creative inspiration in the absence of Fernandes. Positively for Amorim, Casemiro – who missed the Villa game due to suspension – is set to be available for Newcastle later this week. The United head coach could also call up any of the multiple midfield prospects in the youth ranks.
