Legendary Paolo Maldini ‘Heir’ Considering Winter Move To Manchester United

BACK Dylan Oakley Dec 11th 2025 Former Real Madrid centre-back Sergio Ramos is reportedly considering a January move to Manchester United.  The Red Devils will go into the January transfer window feeling very positive about their outlook for the rest of the season. They recently beat Wolves 4-1, and are sixth in the Premier League table. Ruben Amorim reportedly wants to sign a holding midfielder and a wing-back in the January window, but he could add a centre-back too. Sergio Ramos is set to leave Mexican side Monterrey at the end of December, as his contract is due to expire. A report by Spanish news outlet Fichajes says that Sergio Ramos is considering a free agent move to Manchester United in January once his contract at Monterrey expires on New Year’s Eve. Ramos has to be considered as one of the greatest centre-backs of all time, and he has been hailed as such by one of the greatest…Paolo Maldini. The former Italy international was quoted in the New Indian Express: “Sergio Ramos is my heir in football. He’s very quick, powerful & has great technique.” The 39-year-old could provide Manchester United with some much-needed winning experience that could help get the Red Devils into the Champions League places. Have Manchester United been linked to any other centre-backs? Heading into the January transfer window, there are a few defenders who have been linked with a move to Manchester United, to help bolster Ruben Amorim‘s back three. Recent reports have said that United are eyeing up a move for Elche centre-back David Affengruber, who has a market value of just £6.5m. Affengruber has made 14 league appearances for Elche this season, and the Austrian can play as a centre-back or a midfielder, meaning he’s fantastic on the ball. Affengruber will be well suited to playing in a back three for this reason. Manchester United could sign the 24-year-old for some more youth, and Ramos for some experience.
